They know, "Other resident bhikkhus have not come." They, with a view to causing division, declare Pavāraṇā, saying, "Let them perish, let them be destroyed, what is the use of them?" As soon as they have declared Pavāraṇā, and the entire assembly has risen, then other resident bhikkhus arrive, more in number. By those bhikkhus, O bhikkhus, Pavāraṇā must be declared again. For those who have declared Pavāraṇā, there is an offense of grave demerit. Here, O bhikkhus, in a certain dwelling, on the day of Pavāraṇā, many resident bhikkhus assemble, five or more. They know, "Other resident bhikkhus have not come." They, with a view to causing division, declare Pavāraṇā, saying, "Let them perish, let them be destroyed, what is the use of them?" As soon as they have declared Pavāraṇā, and the entire assembly has risen, then other resident bhikkhus arrive, equal in number. Those who have declared Pavāraṇā, have declared it well. Pavāraṇā must be declared in their presence. For those who have declared Pavāraṇā, there is an offense of grave demerit. The twenty-five cases are finished. 133. The section on going beyond the boundary. 227. Here, O bhikkhus, in a certain dwelling, on the day of Pavāraṇā, many resident bhikkhus assemble, five or more. They do not know, "Other resident bhikkhus are entering the boundary." [...] They do not know, "Other resident bhikkhus have entered the boundary." [...] They do not see other resi- Resident bhikkhus entering the boundary… they do not see other resident bhikkhus having entered the boundary… they do not hear "other resident bhikkhus are entering the boundary"… they do not hear "other resident bhikkhus have entered the boundary"…. Resident by resident, one hundred seventy-five by way of three-fold groups, resident by guest, guest by resident, guest by guest, by way of the ellipsis, there are seven hundred three-fold groups. The section on entering the boundary, with its ellipsis, is finished. 134. Difference in Days 228. Here, monks, for the resident bhikkhus it is the fourteenth day, for the guest bhikkhus it is the fifteenth day. If the resident bhikkhus are more numerous, the guest bhikkhus should follow the resident bhikkhus. If they are equal in number, the guest bhikkhus should follow the resident bhikkhus. If the guest bhikkhus are more numerous, the resident bhikkhus should follow the guest bhikkhus. Here, monks, for the resident bhikkhus it is the fifteenth day, for the guest bhikkhus it is the fourteenth day. If the resident bhikkhus are more numerous, the guest bhikkhus should follow the resident bhikkhus. If they are equal in number, the guest bhikkhus should follow the resident bhikkhus. If the guest bhikkhus are more numerous, the resident bhikkhus should follow the guest bhikkhus. Here, monks, for the resident bhikkhus it is the first day of the month, for the guest bhikkhus it is the fifteenth day. If the resident bhikkhus are more numerous, the resident bhikkhus should not unwillingly grant agreement to the guest bhikkhus; the guest bhikkhus should go outside the boundary and perform the pavāraṇā. If they are equal in number, the resident bhikkhus should not unwillingly grant agreement to the guest bhikkhus; the guest bhikkhus should go outside the boundary and perform the pavāraṇā. If the guest bhikkhus are more numerous, the resident bhikkhus should either grant agreement to the guest bhikkhus, or go outside the boundary. Here, monks, for the resident bhikkhus it is the fifteenth day, for the guest bhikkhus it is the first day of the month. If the resident bhikkhus are more numerous, the guest bhikkhus should either grant agreement to the resident bhikkhus, or go outside the boundary. If they are equal in number, the guest bhikkhus Either unity must be given to the residents, or one must go outside the boundary. If the visiting monks are more numerous, unity must not be given unwillingly by the visitors to the residents; the residents must go outside the boundary and perform the Pavāraṇā. Here, monks, visiting monks see the resident monks' resident manner, resident signs, resident marks, resident indications, well-arranged beds, chairs, cushions, pillows, drinking water and food water prepared, the monastery compound well-swept; having seen, they become doubtful – "Are there resident monks, or are there not?" Those who are doubtful do not investigate, and not having investigated, they perform the Pavāraṇā. An offense of wrong-doing… Those who are doubtful investigate, and having investigated, they do not see, and not having seen, they perform the Pavāraṇā. No offense. Those who are doubtful investigate, and having investigated, they see, and having seen, they perform the Pavāraṇā together. No offense. Those who are doubtful investigate, and having investigated, they see, and having seen, they perform the Pavāraṇā separately. An offense of wrong-doing. Those who are doubtful investigate, and having investigated, they see, and having seen, they perform the Pavāraṇā with the intention of causing schism – "Let them perish, let them be destroyed, what good are they?" An offense of grave fault. Here, monks, visiting monks hear the resident monks' resident manner, resident signs, resident marks, resident indications, the sound of their footsteps as they walk, the sound of their chanting, the sound of their coughing, the sound of their spitting; having heard, they become doubtful – "Are there resident monks, or are there not?" Those who are doubtful do not investigate, and not having investigated, they perform the Pavāraṇā. An offense of wrong-doing. Those who are doubtful investigate, and having investigated, they do not see, and not having seen, they perform the Pavāraṇā. No offense. Those who are doubtful investigate, and having investigated, they see, and having seen, they perform the Pavāraṇā together. No offense. Those who are doubtful investigate, and having investigated, they see, and having seen, they perform the Pavāraṇā separately. An offense of wrong-doing. Those who are doubtful investigate, having investigated, they see, having seen, (they think) "they are perishing, they are utterly perishing, what is the use of them?" with a view to causing division, they invite to confess. An offense of grave fault. But here, monks, resident monks see the manner of arriving monks, the sign of arriving, the mark of arriving, the purpose of arriving, an unfamiliar bowl, an unfamiliar robe, an unfamiliar sitting cloth, washed feet, water poured out; having seen, they become doubtful – "Are there indeed arriving monks, or are there not?" Those who are doubtful do not investigate, having not investigated, they invite to confess. An offense of wrong-doing. Those who are doubtful investigate, having investigated, they do not see, having not seen, they invite to confess. No offense. Those who are doubtful investigate, having investigated, they see, having seen, they invite to confess together. No offense. Those who are doubtful investigate, having investigated, they see, having seen, they invite to confess individually. An offense of wrong-doing. Those who are doubtful investigate, having investigated, they see, having seen, (they think) "they are perishing, they are utterly perishing, what is the use of them?" with a view to causing division, they invite to confess. An offense of grave fault. But here, monks, resident monks hear the manner of arriving monks, the sign of arriving, the mark of arriving, the purpose of arriving, the sound of approaching footsteps, the sound of sandals being shaken off, the sound of coughing, the sound of spitting; having heard, they become doubtful – "Are there indeed arriving monks, or are there not?" Those who are doubtful do not investigate, having not investigated, they invite to confess. An offense of wrong-doing. Those who are doubtful investigate, having investigated, they do not see, having not seen, they invite to confess. No offense. Those who are doubtful investigate, having investigated, they see, having seen, they invite to confess together. No offense. Those who are doubtful investigate, having investigated, they see, having seen, they invite to confess individually. An offense of wrong-doing. Those who are doubtful investigate, having investigated, they see, having seen, (they think) "they are perishing, they are utterly perishing, what is the use of them?" With that intention— they make pavāraṇā with schism as their aim. Offence of grave fault. The exposition of marks, etc., is concluded. 136. Pavāraṇā by those of different communion, etc. 230. Here, monks, visiting monks see resident monks of different communion. They acquire the view of being of the same communion, having acquired the view of being of the same communion, they do not ask, not having asked, they make pavāraṇā together. No offence. They ask, having asked, they do not agree, not having agreed, they make pavāraṇā together. Offence of wrong-doing. They ask, having asked, they do not agree, not having agreed, they make pavāraṇā separately. No offence. Here, monks, visiting monks see resident monks of the same communion.
