He was recognized as the reincarnation of Mipham Dorje, the son of Drakthung Dudjom Dorje, by Kutrak Gurong Jigdral Chöying Dorje. Mipham Dorje himself was renowned as the emanation of Che-yo Rigdzin Chenpo. Later, during the revival of the teachings, Yarlung Tenpai Nyima determined that Thubten Lungtok Gyatso was the reincarnation of Migyur Dorje.
