Then he taught the doctrine of non-harm to those five hundred Brahmins. When his father passed away, he gave all the family's wealth to ascetics and Brahmins, and together with his five hundred followers, he entered the ranks of the wanderers. He traveled to sixteen great cities, and although he asked those who were known as great and powerful heretics and Brahmins about the path of pure conduct, he did not receive a satisfactory answer. Finally, he asked the Blessed One's disciple, the Venerable Upagupta. There, with great faith, he took ordination and received full ordination. Upagupta taught him seven teachings, and within seven days, the five hundred Brahmins attained Arhatship. The Venerable Dhitika meditated on the eight liberations. He caused many local and regional Brahmin leaders to have great faith in the Buddha's teachings. When the Venerable Upagupta entrusted the teachings, in those six cities, the fourfold assembly received prophecies, and the Buddha's teachings greatly flourished. All beings were completely placed in happiness. Once, in the land of Tokharistan, there was a king named Minar. All the inhabitants of that land worshiped the gods of the sky, and they knew nothing of good or evil. During festivals, they would burn large quantities of grain, clothing, jewels, and fragrant wood, offering it to the sky with a great cloud of smoke. The Venerable Dhitika, with his retinue of five hundred Arhats, came from the sky to the place where they were making offerings and sat down. Those people thought they were gods of the sky and prostrated at their feet, offering them extensive offerings. He taught them the Dharma, and the king and thousands of others saw the truth. Countless people took refuge and were established in the precepts. He stayed there for three summer months, and the Sangha increased immeasurably. About a thousand also attained Arhatship. After that, the road between that land and Kashmir became very convenient, and many Kashmiri elders came there, and the teachings greatly flourished. Even during the time of that king and his son Imasha, about fifty great monasteries were built, with countless monks.

Thus it became filled. Furthermore, in the east, in Kāmarūpa, there was a Brahmin named Siddha, who possessed wealth comparable to a great king and, together with many thousands of attendants, diligently worshipped the sun. During one of his sun-worshipping ceremonies, the noble Dhītika displayed a miraculous emanation from the center of the sun's mandala, radiating many rays of light. Thinking it was indeed the sun, the Brahmin worshipped and prostrated, and when he had developed great faith through the Dharma teachings, the noble one revealed his own form. Again, through Dharma teachings, the Brahmin saw the truth and, with great faith, built a monastery called the Great Stupa. There, he also held a grand festival for the Sangha from the four directions, and thus the Buddha's teachings became especially widespread in the land of Kāmarūpa. At that time, in the west, in Malava, there was a Brahmin named Drekme (Arrogant), who ruled the kingdom without wearing a crown. Every day, he slaughtered thousands of goats, performing sacrifices of flesh and blood. He had a thousand sacrificial hearths. He also made all his Brahmin attendants perform Ajamedha sacrifices according to their respective wealth. He also made those who were not Brahmins gather the materials for offerings. Once, he desired to perform a Gomedha, a sacrifice of pure cattle, so he summoned a sage from the caste of outcasts, named Bhrigu Rakasa, to perform the sacrifice. He gathered a hundred thousand pure white cattle and summoned many Brahmins. He also prepared many other sacrificial items. When he began to perform the sacrifice, the noble Dhītika came to the sacrificial site, but no matter how he tried, he could not light the fire. No matter how he tried, the cattle could not be killed or even wounded. The Brahmins recited the Vedas and mantras, but no sound came forth. Then Bhrigu Rakasa said, "The obstacle to the completion of this sacrifice is the power of this renunciate!" Then everyone threw stones, sticks, and ashes at him, but they saw them turn into flowers and sandalwood powder. They developed faith, prostrated at his feet, and begged for forgiveness, asking, "Noble one, what do you command?" The noble one said, "Brahmins, release me!"

What can be done with this wicked sacrificial sin? Give alms! Do good deeds! I am a god of the Brahmin caste, and if I am one who performs fire offerings, then what will become of killing gods and parents? Can the gods be satisfied by unclean beef that Brahmins should not touch? Abandon this evil practice of the righteous! By craving meat, what will this burnt offering make you become? Showing healing through illusion is deceiving the world with mantras. After extensively teaching the Dharma in this way, they all regretted their sinful actions. Ashamed of their own behavior, they lowered their heads and humbly asked for a way to eliminate sin. According to the method taught by the Noble One, all the Brahmins were made to take refuge and were established in the five precepts. A great temple was built on the site of the householder Gadangchen's monastery, and they diligently practiced the seven kinds of merit arising from wealth. In this way, the teachings were especially spread in that area. At that time, it was not long after King Ashoka was born. After them, gradually about five hundred Brahmins developed faith in the Three Jewels, upheld the Buddha's teachings for a long time, benefited sentient beings, and then entrusted the teachings to the Noble Krishna and passed away in the excellent land of Malava, in the realm of the Holy King. This is the story of the time of the Noble Dhītika, the fifth story. At that time, King Ashoka was in his youth. This story belongs to the Tharu lineage. In a place called Champa Arna, a king of the solar race named Nemita, along with five hundred ministers, ruled the northern region with great wealth. He initially had six sons: the virtuous one, the chariot one, the conch one, the wealth one, the lotus one, and the sixth was the golden one. At another time, a merchant's wife became pregnant after uniting with the king. One day, on the day of dispelling sorrow after the king's mother passed away, the merchant's wife gave birth to a boy. Because this child was born on the day of dispelling sorrow, he was named Ashoka. When he grew up, he...

At a time when he was well-versed in sixty-four arts, eight kinds of observation, and writing and arithmetic, the ministers asked a Brahmin fortune-teller in the midst of the people: Which of the king's sons will become king? He said: The one who eats the best food, wears the best clothes, and sits on the best cushion. Then, the two best ministers secretly inquired, and he said: The best food is rice, the best clothes are coarse cloth, and the best cushion is a bow. Therefore, they knew that the other sons of the king possessed abundant wealth, while Ashoka enjoyed those ordinary foods and clothes, so he would become king. During that time, many mountain people in Nepal and Kashmir revolted. In order to subdue them, Ashoka was sent with an army, and he defeated the mountain people without difficulty, levied tribute, captured hostages, divided the land, and offered these to the king. The king said: I am pleased with your wisdom, strength, and courage, and I will give you whatever you want. He said: I am persecuted here by my other brothers, please grant me the city of Pataliputra as a residence, and all the things I desire. The king granted it, and he built five hundred gardens in that city, and surrounded himself with a thousand women playing music, enjoying sensual pleasures day and night. After that, King Chama of Magadha passed away. He had twelve sons, and although some were appointed as kings, they did not control the throne. A minister named Brahmin Calmness ruled for several years. At that time, King Nemita and the two became enemies, and they fought for a long time on the banks of the Ganges, and the king's six eldest sons participated in the battle. Just then, King Nemita also passed away. They thought that if the news of the king's death was announced, the Magadhas would become powerful, so they concealed the news, and the affairs of the kingdom were handled by the two ministers. After seven days, the people of the city learned of this and were about to execute the two ministers. At that time, they thought that the time foretold by the Brahmin before was now, so they summoned Ashoka and placed him on the throne.
