The First Karmapa's Teachings 1KM7 The Testament of Je Düsum Khyenpa The Testament of Je Düsum Khyenpa The Testament of Je Düsum Khyenpa. Homage to the Omniscient! The Dharma Lord Düsum Khyenpa, whose name is as famous as the sun and moon, passed away on the first day of the Tiger month in the Year of the Ox. At that time, Geshe Tsangpo Ba, the steward Dhul, the steward Drak Seng, Drak Rin, Könchok Gyaltsen, Na-unpa, and other elders gathered to hear his testament: 'What I possess is nothing more than the clothes on my body and the hand mill for grinding tsampa. All other belongings belong to the Sangha. There are two hundred and twenty-two sang of gold, as well as silver, turquoise, silk brocade, mules, and many cooking utensils. You five should take charge of these and distribute them to the monks according to the rules. After my passing, stay here for a year or two.' The steward Drak Seng asked, 'How long should we stay?' He straightened up, opened his eyes wide, and said, 'At least stay through a winter and summer, wouldn't you?' Again, he said, 'Young man, stay here for a year or two and take good care of these supports of my body, speech, and mind, without losing a single letter or word. I will also instruct and entrust the Dharma protectors.' For three months prior to this, rainbows continuously appeared in the sky, earthquakes occurred, and there were sounds like thunder, and other great omens. Especially on the night from the second to the third, earthquakes continued incessantly. In addition, a rainbow umbrella appeared above the monastery, and some saw many dakinis gathering and heard the sound of hand drums. On the morning of the third, he bid farewell to the monks, saying, 'Now you may leave.' Then, he sat upright, crossed his legs in the lotus position, gazed at the sky for a long time, then covered his head with a cloth and entered into meditation. On the evening of the third, accompanied by the sun and moon, he passed away at the age of eighty-four for the benefit of beings in other realms. After that, the cremation was held on the tenth. At the cremation ceremony, people saw the sun twice as large as usual, and the appearance of thirteen and seven or eight suns, everyone rejoiced, the light was like a peacock feather umbrella, and many heroes and yoginis adorned with bone ornaments appeared, flowers rained down, and on top of the pyre... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Within a rainbow-like tent and smoke that transformed into a rainbow, the Lama resided. Birds circled in the smoke, and many beautiful musical sounds arose from the fire, deer gathered to pay homage, and many such visions appeared. For those without spiritual practice, it was a blessing, and for those with practice, it was an advancement. Thereafter, emptiness and compassion were inseparable, teaching the Dharma of various vehicles, the mind, speech, and heart of Bodhichitta of the Lama developed, and stability in the generation stage was attained, and many deities descended for the benefit of others. Thus, having passed away in the New Year, due to the cold of winter, most had departed, and in the spring, the remaining Geshe Tsangpo, Sher Jung, Kon Seng, Pon Rinchen Senge, Chagpon Drak Seng, and other great figures gathered and deliberated. They agreed that Tsurphu was difficult to maintain and develop, and that Jara was the heart of the region, the nexus of the land, and suitable as the seat of the monastery. So, they requested Gomdar to be the caretaker and gathered at Jara. Khenpo (Abbot) Zochen Taa'u came from Rinchen Gang to build the stupa. Geshe Nyal-te, the Sabum Khenpo of Geshe Ton Gyal, was invited. All the construction work was put into practice. Then, Geshe Yorpoche served as the head of digging the foundation for the roof of the main temple. At that time, the teacher Sher Rin said: 'Oh, you two listen. Tsurphu Monastery was personally chosen by Rinpoche (Precious One) from Gangra Mountain, who came here. He gathered the Sangha, left a will, and his body was also placed here, and his ashes are also kept here. He also did many meditations, gave many empowerments and blessings, and blessed this land, and then said where to go.' So, the three teachers and disciples made a vow, and for the sake of Rinpoche's representative, the cremated ashes, milk, and incense were placed inside, containing the relics of the Buddha, the bones of the Kagyu lineage masters, the relics of the Dharma Lord, hair, fingernails, toenails, clothes, and so on, all were perfectly completed, and placed in the former bedroom as a symbol of faith. Furthermore, for those who wanted to build a stupa to commemorate the ashes and so on, the two teachers and disciples discussed and thought that although there are many styles of stupas, it is necessary to build one similar to the Palden Drepung Stupa.
