A servant, only passing time by developing trade with relatives, managing household affairs, harmonizing relationships with relatives, and acting as a local leader. Destroying oneself, ruining oneself. Taking on burdens that leave no time for comfort or leisure, even for a single morning. Whether or not one gains some enjoyment, one thinks, "No matter what I do, I won't receive others' faith and respect, nor will I consume offerings and alms. No matter what I do, people won't speak ill of me." Thus, one undertakes all the affairs of a householder, not refraining from any unwholesome deed, becoming more greedy and shameless than other householders, losing the opportunity for Dharma practice, and becoming a stepping stone to falling into the lower realms. This is suffering in both this life and the next, mistaking suffering for happiness. Later, one pretends to be a practitioner, imprisoning oneself, letting the mind wander, and feigning conduct. Leaving delusion in one's own mindstream, one imprisons the virtuous actions of body and speech. Abandoning the deity of wisdom, one turns to worshiping wealth deities and local deities. Abandoning loving-kindness and compassion, one prioritizes one's own desires. Letting delusion and thoughts run rampant, one piles up signs of seclusion at the door. Without a single quality of scriptural understanding or realization in one's own mindstream, one counts the years and months of retreat. Not even willing to give away a single morsel of food, one gives away a body of flesh and blood. Relying on the tinkling of cymbals and the thumping of drums. While reciting scriptures for eating, drinking, and striving for gain, and preparing offerings, one claims to be in retreat. In front of others, one pretends, fearing to be seen as a lama or a nun. In one's own home, one secretly spends time distracted and working. One leads the invocation of deities onto the path, and counts prayer beads as a gathering. All virtuous deeds are done only superficially. After a few years of this, one joins the ranks of lamas and teachers. Offerings and mortuary goods fall like rain. Faced with delicious food and sweet drinks, respect and reverence, and the faith of patrons, the respect of the monastic community, etc., without examining one's own mind, one arises with meaningless pride. Even if the fully enlightened Buddha were to appear, one would have no faith or respect. One finds fault with Dharma friends, and has many complaints about patrons. One is not satisfied with one's own food, cannot stay in one's own home, and demands what is not needed.

Greed and anger rise like horns, attachment and hatred blaze like fire, concern for appearances and conformity increase, guarding the minds of householders and patrons, burning the hearts of monks and fellow practitioners, abandoning cause and effect. Thinking, "Now I can do whatever I want," indulging in sleep and carelessness, passing time with idle chatter and rude behavior, hypocrisy and pretense, possessed by demons and spirits, seeing them as one's own gods, actually becoming demons, contradicting the path of the Dharma, confusing Dharma and one's own mindstream, immediately after death being born into a temporary hell. The root of these two evil paths is the thought of pursuing this life, so that alone must be restrained. All practices in this worldly life are included in these two evil paths, so they must be abandoned. Secondly, the method of restraining is: from the peak of the highest existence downwards, to the lowest hell of Avici upwards, wherever one is born in these three realms, it is the nature of suffering, the waves of suffering, the wheel of suffering, like a pit of fire, like an island of rakshasis, like the edge of a razor, like an unclean house, there is not even a hair's breadth of opportunity for happiness, all efforts are meaningless, all actions are suffering, there is nothing whatsoever that has any meaning like a sesame seed, so what is the use of all the actions of this worldly life? Now we have obtained a human body with leisure and endowments, met a qualified lama, at this time when it is possible to practice the holy Dharma, if a thought arises from the depths of one's heart that one must somehow escape from this ocean of suffering of samsara, then this alone is the Pratimoksha vow. The four Vinaya texts, the two hundred and fifty precepts, the tenets of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and the meaning of all the Pitakas are included in this one thought. This is the cornerstone of all paths, the root of all Dharmas, the basis of all vehicles, so when a genuine renunciation that can abandon this life arises in one's mindstream, one has grasped the beginning of the path to liberation, so one must generate this in one's mindstream, and if it has not arisen, one must repeatedly contemplate the suffering of samsara in general, and in particular the impermanence and suffering nature of all actions of oneself and others, and thereby generate strong diligence in one's own mindstream. Firstly, the virtuous Pratimoksha vow.

This is the chapter on vows. Second, the teaching on inner Bodhicitta is: The essence of a Bodhisattva is altruism. That is to say, here too, there are two things: what should be guarded and the method of guarding. First, what should be guarded is: the mind that clings to self-interest. That is, clinging to this life, such as wanting one's own comfort, wanting happiness, wanting fame, etc., is the same as before. The ultimate good and the fruit of liberation are not just for oneself, but for the benefit of all sentient beings. If there is no such thought, one will fall into the Hinayana, which is the difference from before. For this, it is necessary to completely eliminate the desire for one's own comfort. However, if one does not realize the equality of self and others from the first bhumi, it is impossible, so now one needs to gradually train the mind. // A summary of the essential points of the three vows.
