A Concise Summary of the Three Vows. A Concise Summary of the Three Vows. This is called "A Concise Summary of the Three Vows." I prostrate to the lamas who possess great compassion! In general, all the Buddha's teachings and categories of vehicles, which are inconceivable, can be summarized into the two vehicles, the Great Vehicle and the Small Vehicle. The Great Vehicle is divided into Sutra and Tantra, so all the essential points of practice are contained within the three vows. If we summarize these three vows, it is as follows: The essence of individual liberation is renunciation. The essence of Bodhicitta is benefiting others. The essence of Secret Mantra is pure appearance. All three converge on taming one's own mind. This has four aspects: outer individual liberation, inner Bodhicitta, secret Secret Mantra, and the way to practice the three vows without contradiction. First, the outer individual liberation vow is: The essence of individual liberation is renunciation. This means there are two aspects: what is to be abandoned and what abandons. First, what is to be abandoned is: right now, the minds of us all are not striving for liberation and enlightenment in future lives, but clinging to this life, seeking pleasure, fame, and good reputation, or striving for food, clothing, and gossip. This mind is what is to be abandoned. The root of these is attachment to this life, and the root of that is self-grasping. Among these, it is more difficult to abandon the desire for fame than the desire for pleasure and happiness; it is more difficult to abandon gossip than food and clothing. Why is this? Worldly people know they will be killed, but still rush into battle, abandoning pleasure and happiness to pursue fame. For the sake of a good reputation after their death, they even abandon their own lives, which is a great mistake. Also, practitioners may deprive themselves of food and clothing, and practice Dharma with hardship and diligence, but if others say they are good practitioners, they are happy, and for that purpose, they boast of their virtuous deeds, which is abandoning food and clothing and valuing gossip. Food and clothing are indispensable for the nourishment of the body, but to abandon them and pursue empty gossip is also a great mistake. Therefore, all of us want to do things that will not make us ashamed in front of others, whether in worldly or Dharma matters, which is pursuing gossip and fame, so it is the most important of all things to be abandoned. Like this, self-grasping and attachment to this life

These two attachments are the root of all motivations for worldly or samsaric pursuits. Based on this motivation, whether one practices Dharma or engages in worldly affairs, there is no way to escape the need for material possessions and enjoyment. Even when practicing Dharma, if one lacks sufficient food, clothing, shelter, and resources, it seems difficult to achieve anything. The root of all worldly happiness, joy, and fame seems to lie solely in enjoyment. If this enjoyment is not enough to sustain one's life, then even a little accumulation will not last long, which is the second negative motivation. So, how should one seek these enjoyments? Some people might think, like so-and-so, who obtains enjoyment through commerce and agricultural efforts. If I do the same, I am capable of diligence in work and effort. Even if I cannot do it completely, there is no reason not to do my best. Regarding knowledge of commerce and deception, I may know something. Even if I don't know, there is no reason not to learn. For example, I must strive to master these methods. Or, some people might think, like so-and-so, who is respected by people, is happy himself, and obtains great offerings and faith. If I do something like that, my conduct will be good, and I will be able to do some virtuous deeds and retreats. My desire for women is also small. For example, I will surely attain a position like a lama or a good teacher, these are the third negative motivations. Of these two, the former abandons all Dharma activities, virtuous deeds, and practices, spending time on work and effort, engaging in commercial calculations and deception. There are many things to do, and many things to be done, requiring participation in many social activities. It is necessary to recognize and cater to all the important figures of the kingdom. There is not even time to leisurely drink a cup of tea. Day and night, one is immersed in meaningless distractions and thoughts, losing oneself. Whether one is happy or not, whether these actions are meaningful, such thoughts never even arise. One doesn't even have time to dress properly and tighten one's belt, but like a casual yogi, caring for
