Collected Teachings of Je Tsongkhapa JTs165: Mind Training Drawn from Eloquent Poetry Homage to Guru Manjughosha! I prostrate to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and their retinues! May all sentient beings in all realms be happy! May the eloquent poetry of the Bodhisattvas and the teachings of the Buddhas be a feast of Dharma joy. May all wandering beings, with unwavering faith and boundless wisdom, purify accumulated sins and obscurations. If sins and obscurations are not purified quickly, our respective karmas will become powerful and uncontrollable. Even if we clearly know what is happiness, we cannot choose it freely; even if we clearly know what is suffering, we cannot escape it. Most people are tormented by karma. Even the Shravaka Arhats and Pratyekabuddhas, etc., are said to be tormented by the truth of karmic consequences. Does karma bring about endless suffering and happiness? Do the Buddhas of the past, present, and future know all of this? Are countless sentient beings experiencing all of this? Are we ourselves inextricably linked to karma? Therefore, we should contemplate that karmic consequences are infallible, and now we should choose between good and bad deeds. From today onwards, we should avoid evil; from tonight onwards, we should strive to do good. The root of good and bad deeds lies in good and bad thoughts. If the thought is good, then the situation and path will also be good; if the thought is inferior, then the situation and path will also be inferior. Everything depends on the purity of thought. Therefore, those who harbor competitive minds and malice, and those who cling to sectarian prejudices, are they not creating the source of their own suffering? Those who are good at thinking and possess wisdom, those who are oriented towards worldly matters, those who deceive people's minds, and those who are greedy for desires and have empty hearts, when they deceive our minds, they bring suffering. Look at how Devadatta indulged in hatred! Therefore, generate a good Bodhicitta. If the mind is good, then the precious human rebirth has meaning; if the mind is not good, then the precious human rebirth has no meaning. Friends, fill your hearts with goodness! In a state of good intention, first sever the doubts about the words and meanings of the scriptures through hearing and thinking. After severing the doubts of hearing and thinking both externally and internally, go to a solitary place to meditate, and that will be meaningful. After that, generate a purely altruistic mind, and regard all sentient beings as your parents. At any time, do not forget Bodhicitta. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember the kindness of parents, and do your best to help others, benefiting all beings. Knowing and repaying kindness is good for oneself and others in this life and the next. A person who repays kindness with evil is said to be even lower than an animal. Towards the beings of the degenerate age, have a compassionate heart like a mother loving her child. Proclaim the supreme Dharma to all sentient beings, and learn from the example of the Buddha. To benefit others with faith, this mind is good. Generate a good heart, be willing to help others, and extend a helping hand when others need it. Guide with reason, and benefit others when needed. Cultivate a good heart, and evil thoughts will gradually decrease. Practice meditation, and the two obscurations will naturally be eliminated. Generate compassion, and merit will naturally increase. Rely on the antidote, and afflictions will naturally dissolve. Enemies can also become friends, benefiting oneself, and friends can also become enemies. Towards whom do you generate hatred? Towards whom do you feel aversion? If you think carefully, all beings are our relatives and parents. In short, abandon evil thoughts and cultivate good thoughts. Do not harbor malice in your heart, and always cherish the intention to benefit others. After hearing the Dharma, contemplate it carefully, and tame your mind through practice. Abandon meaningless worldly affairs and rely on meaningful practice. If you cannot abandon worldly affairs no matter what, then you must carefully distinguish what is Dharma and what is not Dharma. There is a way to transform the noisy worldly life into practice. Like caring for yourself, devise plans for yourself. Good has good results, and evil has evil results; doing good brings happiness, and doing evil brings suffering. Associate with virtuous friends, and treat them like relatives and parents. If you can help others, you will ultimately benefit yourself. If you harm others, you will ultimately harm yourself. The evil thought of burning the happiness of others is a container for accumulating sins and defilements. Stay away from the accumulation of meaningless sins. Generate reverence for all those who practice the Dharma. Cultivate compassion for all sentient beings. Make the aspiration that all those you see may be happy. After that, contemplate that happiness pervades everything. With a joyful heart, contemplate and analyze the Dharma. Arrange the compositions into beautiful verses. In this way, the Dharma will be deeply imprinted in the heart. Thinking in this way, one can reveal the joy of the Dharma. The root is that this poem is easy to understand. The commentary is that the Dharma is all about practical transmission. The verses are about the wonderful aspects of writing. The meaning is about the correct way to practice the Dharma. The excellent treatise condenses all the teachings into this. I wrote these words so that people can read them. May good knowledge and sincere hearts grow ever greater. May wisdom increase! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
