If, with the sword of wisdom, one grasps the mind held by calm abiding (samatha), and becomes accustomed to analyzing suchness, then it will have the power to destroy opposing factors. As it says in the 'First Stage of Meditation': 'Therefore, holding the mind with the hand of concentration (samādhi), with the sword of extremely subtle wisdom, one should remove the thorn of the seeds of wrong conceptualizations about forms and so on that are present in that mind. Having done so, just as trees that have been uprooted do not grow again, so too, because the root is gone, the mind of wrong conceptualization will not arise.' Just as cutting a tree a few times will not fell it, so too, if one does not analyze repeatedly with wisdom, insight (vipaśyanā) will not become powerful, so one should analyze again and again. When analyzing objects in various ways, although there is no concentration that single-pointedly abides without analysis, one should know that because the root of concentration is stable, there will arise a feeling of analyzing in a non-conceptual state. Because of the extremely stable abiding power that dwells in the mindstream, if hatred and attachment, etc., arise from within that, unlike when calm abiding has not been accomplished, such as arising strongly and without interruption, etc., but one sees that they arise weakly and for a short duration, etc., one says that this is a manifestation of wisdom and not a manifestation of conceptual thought, or that even though it is an affliction, it cannot accumulate karma, or that from that point on, even if one enters into the causes for the arising of afflictions, one cannot be bound, so one says that this is the time to take afflictions as the path, etc. These things happen to those who have very little understanding of concentration, but one should know that this is common to both inner and outer, and to both the Great and Small Vehicles. When calm abiding is balanced, even if the calm abiding aspect is greater, one will not see suchness very clearly, like someone who is deluded by sleep, so at that time one should meditate on wisdom.' As it says, if one relies too much on calm abiding and does not like to analyze, or even if one analyzes, one cannot proceed, and the mind completely abides in the state of calm abiding, one thinks that cultivating after analysis is the cultivation of conceptual thought, so one thinks that meditating on non-conceptuality for each session is superior, and one should not abandon the cultivation of analysis. Because Master Vasubandhu said, 'The analysis of forms comes from learning, and both learning and cultivation have analysis, because there is no contemplation.' And in his explanation... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The reason for non-arising is: when effort is applied to these thoughts, one will abide in the samadhi of these thoughts. Even ordinary beings born in the Form Realm, when they apply effort to thoughts arising from contemplation, they will not be distracted but will enter into samadhi. For both Shamatha (止,zhǐ,calm abiding) and Vipashyana (观,guān,insight), each has two objects of focus: 'as it is' (如所有性,rú suǒ yǒu xìng,suchness) and 'as many as there are' (尽所有性,jìn suǒ yǒu xìng,all that exists). As stated in the 'Instructions on the Prajnaparamita': 'For 'as many as there are' and 'as it is', becoming a non-conceptual image is the object of Shamatha. For 'as many as there are' and 'as it is', becoming a conceptual image is the object of Vipashyana.' Even on the level of ordinary beings, when generating Vipashyana that focuses on 'as many as there are', it is not necessarily the case that one meditates on aspects of grossness and subtlety. Because Vipashyana arises from repeatedly examining the individual characteristics of the eighteen elements. As stated in the 'Instructions on the Prajnaparamita': 'Then, relying on that very Shamatha, these various images themselves are like this: from the Realm of Form to the Realm of Mind, these are called all dharmas. Thus, repeatedly distinguishing and completely examining them. Through complete examination, one should perfect Vipashyana.' This also appears in the Sutra of Unraveling the Intent. This Vipashyana, although it does not act as an antidote to manifest afflictions, it does so for the sake of training the power of Samadhi. Relying on this, one can also realize many other Vipashyanas that focus on 'as many as there are.' This explanation of the difficult points of Shamatha and Vipashyana, without reversing the intention of the Victorious Ones, was composed by the great yogi of Shamatha and Vipashyana, Lobsang Drakpa May relying on this, the stain of inverted understanding of the correct path be pacified! Mangalam! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
