Collected Teachings of Je Tsongkhapa JTs153: An Undistorted Explanation of the Victorious Ones' Intent Regarding the Joyful Abode of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. An Undistorted Explanation of the Victorious Ones' Intent Regarding the Joyful Abode of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. An Undistorted Explanation of the Victorious Ones' Intent Regarding the Joyful Abode of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. Practicing only śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,罗马转写:śamatha,寂止) or vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,罗马转写:vipaśyanā,胜观) alone is not sufficient; both must be cultivated. As stated in the 'Sūtra on the Complete Grasp of the Dharma': 'If the mind dwells in equanimity, it will know reality as it is.' This does not mean that merely becoming accustomed to focusing the mind on one point will lead to the realization of true meaning. Rather, it should be understood that with a mind dwelling in equanimity (śamatha), after firmly settling the mind on the object of focus, one then investigates that object with wisdom (vipaśyanā), thereby giving rise to the wisdom that realizes true meaning. This is clearly explained in the 'First Stage of Meditation': 'Thus, when the mind is made firm on the object of focus by śamatha, if one investigates well with wisdom, then the light of true wisdom will arise. As light arises and dispels darkness, so too will it eliminate obscurations.' Śamatha and vipaśyanā, like the eye and light, cooperate with each other to generate true wisdom, and are not opposed to each other like light and darkness. Samādhi (定,梵文:samādhi,罗马转写:samādhi,等持) is not of the nature of darkness. Why? Because the characteristic of focusing the mind on one point is that, if one dwells in equanimity, one will thoroughly know reality as it is. Therefore, it is highly consistent with wisdom, and not opposed to it.' Therefore, gaining a stable mind through the cultivation of śamatha is like light; examining suchness with wisdom is like the eye. Śamatha is the unwavering focus of the mind on one point, while vipaśyanā is the investigation of objects. Therefore, one should not think that they are mutually obstructive. Furthermore, it is unreasonable to think that a mind without śamatha is like a lamp flickering in the wind, while through the power of śamatha, it is like a lamp standing in a windless place, unshaken by the winds of conceptual thought. For, in the method of practicing investigative meditation with vipaśyanā, even if śamatha has been achieved, the mind will still be shaken by the winds of conceptual thought when practicing vipaśyanā. If one admits that, relying on the achievement of śamatha, all movements of the mind cease when practicing vipaśyanā, then that fault exists. However, merely the cessation of the mind's movements --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is not like that. This is because it is said in consideration of stopping the fault of agitation. What is the fault of agitation? It is that when the mind is focused on a desired object, it involuntarily runs towards an undesired object. Regarding the determination of the order: If one does not cultivate shamatha (calm abiding) and initially becomes accustomed to merely settling the mind in vipassanā (insight), then the samadhi (concentration) arising from this may become a mundane meditative attainment. However, this is merely a shamatha meditative attainment, not a vipassanā meditative attainment. Therefore, one must still generate a vipassanā meditative attainment. Hence, one must first cultivate shamatha and then generate the vipassanā meditative attainment through analytical meditation. Therefore, one must first cultivate shamatha and then cultivate vipassanā. If one can generate a mundane meditative attainment focused on suchness, one cannot say that merely cultivating that much can generate a supramundane meditative attainment, because all the qualities of mundane meditative attainment would become excessively exaggerated. Furthermore, the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* states that relying on the prior accomplishment of shamatha, one can induce pliancy through analytical meditation, thereby cultivating vipassanā, etc. This contradicts many scriptures that explain a definite order, so it is not permissible to think in that way. Thus, except for the special case where, according to the tenets of other schools, one meditates on suchness with a specific object-possessor, in all situations where a vipassanā meditative attainment has not been previously generated and is newly generated, one must rely on the prior cultivation of shamatha and cultivate vipassanā through analytical meditation. Even if shamatha is cultivated through stabilizing meditation and vipassanā is cultivated through analytical meditation, what is the reason why it is necessary to first cultivate shamatha and then cultivate vipassanā? This is difficult to understand, so it will be explained: For example, just as when one holds an axe to cut down a tree, if the hand trembles greatly, no matter how many times the axe strikes the tree, it cannot be cut down, so too, if shamatha has not been previously accomplished, the mind that analyzes has no basis for abiding, and no matter how much one analyzes, the power to destroy opposing factors will not arise. Just as when a strong hand holds a sharp axe very steadily and cuts, the tree can be quickly cut down, so too, the samadhi of shamatha is very stable. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
