Collected Teachings of Je Tsongkhapa JTs123, A Granted Manuscript of the Commentary on the Summary of Thatness A Granted Manuscript of the Commentary on the Summary of Thatness A Granted Manuscript of the Commentary on the Summary of Thatness From the first chapter of the Ornament of Kosala, a commentary on the Summary of Thatness: This is the path of uniting Śamatha (calm abiding) and Vipaśyanā (insight). Śamatha is the characteristic of Samādhi (concentration), where the mind is fully absorbed in a single object of focus. Vipaśyanā is wisdom, the characteristic of discriminating phenomena arising from the mind. With a mind in equanimity, it discerns, 'This is with outflows (Sāsrava),' 'This is without outflows (Anāsrava),' 'This is defiled (Kliṣṭa),' 'This is purified (Vyavadāna),' which is the aspect of discrimination. If Śamatha is dominant, the mind tends towards dullness. If Vipaśyanā is dominant, the mind tends towards excitement. Therefore, by sequentially applying mindfulness of appearance and mindfulness of impermanence, one should reverse the objects of distraction and abide in uniting the objects of contemplation. With the rope of mindfulness, one should turn the mind away from whatever deviates from the state of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā and apply it to the correct path, which is uniting. By the very act of uniting, one enters into a state of non-conceptual engagement. This is the meaning. By that method, it becomes the path to Nirvāṇa (liberation), hence it is called the path of uniting. Furthermore, it is said in the same text, 'Individually examine your own mind and abide in equanimity.' The term 'own mind' refers to one's own mind, the consciousness of the mind. 'Individually examine' means to individually know, to individually contemplate the meaning of phenomena, hence it is called individual examination. If one individually analyzes the characteristics of the aggregates such as form, one realizes: 'Even one atom is not real, nor are many extremely small particles. Their aggregation is also not real, because an atom cannot be established. If six are joined together at once, the atom would have six parts. If the six were in the same place, the mass would be as small as an atom.' Thus, through such reasoning, one understands that these are not real, and one establishes the view that 'these are only mind.' Individual examination is the meaning of this establishment. In practice, attaining single-pointedness of mind is to individually examine the mind and abide in equanimity.

In 《Kosala'i rgyan (Kosala's Ornament)》, it says: One should generate such a thought, so that the continuity of consciousness is not interrupted. Every day, one should well discern the inconceivable samadhi, and abandon evil thoughts, as well as various signs of thoughts such as householders, renunciants, ghosts, and so on. As it is said: 'The mad elephant of the mind, behaves perversely, with the rope of mindfulness, tied to the pillar of the object of focus, gradually, use the iron hook of wisdom to subdue it.' Like this, therefore one should contemplate the tip of the nose. Vajra Fine Dust (rdo rje phra mo) means that if the contemplation of the tip of the nose is stable, the sign of the touch of bliss will arise, because it is the touch that is the cause of bliss, therefore it is the touch of bliss. If there is Vajra Fine Dust, because it touches bliss, therefore Vajra Fine Dust is touching bliss. Vajra Fine Dust is that from that touch of bliss, the mind can be equally abiding,' which means that one can attain samadhi. It says: If one can contemplate Vajra Fine Dust, then at the tip of the nose or elsewhere other than the tip of the nose, wherever the difference of the sign of the touch of bliss arises, one can eliminate the faults such as heaviness of the body, and one can generate extreme pliancy of the body. If one can be free from the heaviness of the body, the body can be capable, and one can be able to become invisible. Extreme pliancy of the body can experience bliss, and having bliss can make the mind one-pointed. As it is said: 'Vajra Fine Dust touch of bliss, when the sign arises.' The meaning of this sentence is that from the contemplation of Vajra Fine Dust, whenever the body or mind arises the touch of bliss, at that time, that sign is 'ཁྱབ་བྱ་བ། (khyab bya ba)', which means to spread out and expand. 'སེམས་དེ། (sems de)' means that for the sake of the external form, whether it is white or yellow, etc., the nature of consciousness that appears separately, is called 'སེམས་དེ། (sems de)'. 'ཀུན་ཏུ་ཁྱབ་པར་བྱ། (kun tu khyab par bya)' means that it should also be distributed in the ten directions. The inner sign refers to the difference of the touch that is the cause of the feeling of bliss, which is also called 'སེམས། (sems)'. 'ཀུན་ཏུ་ཁྱབ་པར་བྱ། (kun tu khyab par bya)' means that one should pervade one's entire body with that sign of the touch of bliss. 'ཇི་ཙམ་འདོད་པར་སེམས་ཁྱབ་ནས། །ཁམས་གསུམ་དུ་ཡང་ཁྱབ་པར་འགྱུར། (ji tsam 'dod par sems khyab nas, khams gsum du yang khyab par 'gyur)' means, to what extent do you want to pervade? Pervade to the dwelling, monastery, and place... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
