Collected Teachings of Je Tsongkhapa JTs109, Questions and Answers Beginning with the Smallest Unit of Form and the Smallest Unit of Time, etc., Composed by Je Tsongkhapa Himself. Swasti praja bhyah! May all beings be auspicious! In the three realms, known as the Second Buddha, Whose name adorns the path of the ears. May the rays of light from the speech of Vasubandhu (Buddhist scholar, meaning 'kinsman'), like the sun, Continue to illuminate the realm of those to be tamed. The Omniscient One (Kunkhyen, referring to Tsongkhapa), in order to express yojanas (dpag tshad, a unit of length), years, etc., And the terms describing them, Regarding the ultimate minuteness of form, name, and time, dust particles, letters, kshanas (moments), And the saying of twenty-six kshanas. Also, the time when the sun god (Nyinbyed, referring to the sun) moves northward, The last ninth day of the second summer month, And the constellation in the middle summer month (Dbyar 'bring nya, referring to the fifth Tibetan month). And what are the beginning and end of day and night, etc. For the rough and subtle meanings of the scriptures, With the follower of pure reason, subtle wisdom, The confident one who can distinguish without confusion, The questions asked, I will answer as follows: For the smallest unit of form—the subtle particle, It has no association with the east or other directions. Because as long as there is an association with directions, It cannot be considered the smallest unit. The smallest unit of time—the kshana, is the duration of numerous causes and conditions gathering, To produce a result, the same as a finger snap. A complete time is divided into forty-five parts, This one unit is the distance a dust particle moves, Or cutting a single hair with the same force, There are many different ways of describing the duration. In short, in order to indicate that there is nothing shorter than this, A single unit of time, that is why it is said. Regarding the example of the smallest unit of name—the letter, In his own commentary, he says 'like a cow'. Because this is a collection of multiple letters, Therefore, I am still contemplating this matter. The collection of twenty-six kshanas, Is called 'its kshana'. The name for one hundred and twenty time atoms, If one understands the time atom, there will be no doubt. Regarding the last ninth day of the second summer month, And the ninth day of the fourth winter month, It is said that the time when the sun reverses in winter and summer, The spring and autumn equinoxes are on the ninth day of the white month. Many believe that in these two months, the sun reverses, Is the same month. However, according to the view of the Abhidharmakosha (Mdzod, referring to the Abhidharmakosha-bhashya), the fifth and sixth Tibetan months, Are the months when the sun reverses, as shown in the Chinese version. My teacher Namkha Zangpo said so. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If so, then it will be known that early summer is the season of fish, and the month of abundant water is July. This method is also mentioned in the Indian version of the root text. The detailed classifications of seasons mentioned in the *Abhidharmakośa*, *Sūryagarbha*, *Mālikā*, the root text's questions about the year, and the *Great Commentary*, etc., I would like to elaborate on elsewhere. Therefore, only a seed is shown here. Seeing that this and the current solar retrograde time are very inconsistent, I will temporarily set aside those who refute this view. The beginning of the day is the first light of dawn, and the end is when the sun sets. From this, the beginning and end of the night can be inferred. Although there are other statements, they are according to different viewpoints. Those who believe that conventional truth is real, I have not said that it is a particle. Based on the tenets of the two schools, I said that sensory consciousness can see particles. The five consciousnesses focus on accumulated things. Confused by this statement, many unintelligent people say in unison: There are no particles in the objects of the senses! I do not think this 'viewing food' (gzugs zan) system is reasonable, so I explain it according to the statements in the *Abhidharmakośa* and *Tattvasiddhi* about how to form gross matter. The Realists, when forming gross matter, see that contact causes particles to disintegrate, so they believe that except for spaced encirclement, there is no contact, but they exist in a connected way. At that time, no other limbs are produced, nor do they merge into each other, nor do the particles lose their nature, but only the particles gather together. If so, then many particles would be directly seen, and particles would never be seen. To those who say this, what is the point of arguing with intelligent words? They should first learn the alphabet. Sensory consciousness can see scattered particles, but subsequent cognition grasps them as gross matter. Even if the last moment of time is grasped, it can be determined by analytical wisdom, just as the subsequent causal relationships are determined. If particles do not have the ability to produce an image, then they should not be an object of the senses. Then, the statement 'did not produce an image' should be examined. If it is said that the image appearing in consciousness does not appear as scattered like particles, then each individual last moment of time would also not be an object of the senses because it does not produce a similar image. Stop saying it is an object of the senses! I think that you, who are proficient in reasoning, probably do not have such misconceptions. For those who have not completed the analysis of subtle points, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
