Collected Teachings of Je Tsongkhapa JTs49 Notes on the Ten Wrathful Deities 6-13-1a ༄༅། །Notes on the Ten Wrathful Deities ༄༅། །Notes on the Ten Wrathful Deities 6-13-1b ༄༅༅། །Regarding the question of visualizing the central Hūṃ during the meditation on the Ten Wrathful Deities, Advayavajra says it arises from the dharmodaya (chos 'byung). The ritual text says it arises from the mind of Vajrasattva. Amritaprabha, Padmasambhava's Abhisamaya, Bhramahara, and the Six-Limbed Yoga do not say from where it arises. The dharmodaya is said to be white. On it is a multicolored lotus, and in the center of the lotus is a multicolored vajra. Although visualizing the lotus does not appear in this teacher's works, it should be done as described in the sadhanas of Anangavajra, Bhramahara, and Advayavajra. Although Amritaprabha, Padmasambhava, and Śāntipa say to visualize sequentially from the earth when visualizing the arising from the center of the multicolored vajra, here it is done sequentially from the wind, as Anangavajra also says. Abiding in the center of the sphere of space, One should visualize the vajra mandala. With the vajra mandala abiding in the center, One should visualize the light mandala. With the fire mandala abiding in the center, One should also visualize the water. With the water mandala abiding in the center, The ascetic should visualize the Great Powerful One. This is the meaning of what was said. Although Ananga, Ḍombhibhava, Padmasambhava, etc., do not say to visualize the wheel on the earth, it is necessary to do as described in the Six-Limbed Yoga. 6-13-2a The Gurusamgraha says: 'Vairocana, the great king, is the body of expansion and contraction, arising from the letter of the Dharmadhatu, therefore it is necessary to abide in the Buddha.' Therefore, generate Vairocana. Or generate the wheel. The Gurusamgraha says: 'On the mandala of the Great Powerful One, one should also visualize oneself, contemplating arising from bhrūṃ.' Its meaning is, as the Six-Limbed Yoga says: 'From the letter bhrūṃ, I arise on the wheel, practicing the meditation of non-arising.' It should be done as described in the Kumuti. The meaning of 'One should visualize oneself' is that Anangavajra says to establish the illusory consciousness on it. The sadhana of Padmasambhava says: 'On it, one should contemplate the consciousness abiding.' Amritaprabha says: 'Abiding in the wind mandala, one should also contemplate oneself, I and evaṁ becoming one is the wheel.'

Regarding this, some early Tibetan scholars believe that the third letter contained between 'ཧོ་' (Tibetan) and 'ཡིག་' (Tibetan) appears to exist and participate in the four elements and their cycle. Others believe that when arising from emptiness, 'ནམ་མཁའ་ནཱ་ད' (Tibetan, Devanagari, nākāśa nāda, sound of space) or 'ཧཱུཾ་' (Tibetan, Devanagari, hūṃ, seed syllable, Hum) appears in the sky, and after placing five letters, a white bindu falls off and enters the center of the wheel. Śāntipa said, 'The practitioner at that time, through wisdom that transcends the world, abides completely in this.' This indicates that the previous meditation on emptiness fills the practitioner and the four elements they meditate on with wisdom. The 'Non-Dual Vajra Sadhana' states, 'The mind of mere consciousness arising from the interdependent origination of various vajras merges into the great four elements.' This indicates that the previous four elements are also meditated upon as mere consciousness. The view of the explanatory tantras is that generating the four elements and the palace is to recognize that they are merely illusions of one's own mind. Therefore, do not arrogantly think 'This is me' after generating the palace and the foundation. Furthermore, the previous meditation on emptiness is similar to the luminosity of death and the intermediate state. From then on, until the five letters merge into the mother's womb, it must be connected to the intermediate state. Therefore, when generating the four elements and their cycle to show the essence of one's own nature, the consciousness must be connected to the consciousness of the intermediate state. As it is said, 'Do not think about existence between.' But the five letters do not enter there. The 'Moon Selfless Mother Sadhana' also explains that it is impossible to mix one's own nature with 'ཨེ་ཝཾ་' (Tibetan, Devanagari, evaṃ, Sanskrit Romanization, evam, thus), meaning 'ཨེ་' (Tibetan, Devanagari, e, Sanskrit Romanization, e, seed syllable, eh) is the dependent dharma arising, and 'ཝཾ་' (Tibetan, Devanagari, vaṃ, Sanskrit Romanization, vam, seed syllable, vam) are the remaining five that depend on it. The former means that the latter five merge with one's own nature. As Gur previously quoted, from 'བྷཱུཾ་' (Tibetan, Devanagari, bhūṃ, Sanskrit Romanization, bhūṃ, seed syllable, bhum) Vairochana is generated, and then from that the palace is generated. Therefore, from 'བྷཱུཾ་' (Tibetan, Devanagari, bhūṃ, Sanskrit Romanization, bhūṃ, seed syllable, bhum), or from generating the wheel from 'བྷཱུཾ་' (Tibetan, Devanagari, bhūṃ, Sanskrit Romanization, bhūṃ, seed syllable, bhum), everything that is generated are differences in expansion and contraction. The palace is similar to a mandala, including a cemetery. Inside, from 'པཾ་' (Tibetan, Devanagari, paṃ, Sanskrit Romanization, paṃ, seed syllable, pam) an eight-petaled lotus is generated. Because there are no branches, it is called various lotuses. 'Non-Dual Vajra' says it is red, but it should be done according to the previous method. In the center of the lotus are the four, Brahma, etc. The way these four are considered the four maras is: Brahma is the skandha mara, Indra is the son of the gods mara, Vishnu is the klesha mara, and Shiva is the death mara, as explained in 'Non-Dual Vajra'. Since there are no branches, the four maras are in the hearts of all beings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
