The Question of the Tigress. The Question of the Tigress. The Question of the Tigress is hereby presented. Homage to the Three Jewels. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling and practicing in a secluded, medicinal, and verdant mountainous region conducive to yoga. Then, in that mountain hermitage, there was a tigress with cubs. Seeing that her behavior had become weakened by the suffering of bearing cubs, she was experiencing extreme hunger. Her two eyes had become weak in sight. Even though the cubs were her own offspring, they would become like food. Clinging to their mother with affection and without fear, when they approached desiring milk, the tigress would emit a "roar, roar" sound, abandoning them as if they were someone else's children. When the Bodhisattva saw this, although steadfast, he was overcome by compassion, like a tree swaying in an earthquake, trembling with the suffering of others. I, with great suffering, clearly demonstrate that the nature of compassion is steadfast. Even the slightest suffering of others causes him to tremble, how wondrous. Then, the Bodhisattva, with a firm and drawn-out voice, clearly expressed the distinct nature of his language. Driven by compassion, he clearly spoke to his disciple: Alas! Look at this samsara devoid of qualities. This wild animal is so hungry that she has surpassed the boundaries of love, even desiring to eat her own child. Alas! This love for myself is too excessive and unbearable. How could a mother want to eat her own child? Why would she even attempt to do such a thing? Who is it that fosters this enemy of my love? Therefore, in order to prevent the tigress and her cubs from becoming ferocious, one should quickly seek the cause of relieving the suffering of hunger. We should strive to prevent this from happening. Even so, he did not listen, but said, "Let it be done," and then endeavored to find food. Then, the Bodhisattva, using a pretext, sent away his disciple and thought: Even though I have a complete body, why should I seek meat from others? Whether he finds it or not is uncertain, and if my needs cannot be met, for example, this selfless, fearful, and meaningless body, this suffering, forgetful, and perpetually impure body, can

Those who do not rejoice in the ability to benefit others are not wise. Am I so attached to this that I am powerless to abandon the suffering of other beings? There is no happiness in the suffering of other beings. Why abandon it when I have the power? If I abandon it when I have the power, then even the suffering of the enemy who kills, I abandon and commit sin, my heart is like a reed burned by fire. Therefore, protecting the body is like having a life about to fall into a cliff, protecting the tigress who killed the child, and even more so protecting its child than the tigress. Furthermore, to show those who strive to benefit the world, to inspire diligence in others, to make generous people happy, the hearts of upright and holy people, to subdue the great army of demons, to rejoice in the merits of the Buddha, I strive for the benefit of others, creating miracles, overcoming hatred and strong desires, creating miracles, relying on the supreme vehicle, generating faith, relying on generosity, creating miracles, for those who rejoice and rejoice in giving, it is for the sake of practicing on the path to higher realms. Even with just the body, one can benefit others. Whatever I think, may this prayer have results, may I quickly approach the supreme Bodhi. Not for competition, not for seeking fame, not for desiring fame and achieving kingship in the heavenly realms, I do not write this for the sake of obtaining supreme happiness, but for the sake of accomplishing the benefit of others. Therefore, at this moment, may I always be able to eliminate and accomplish the suffering and happiness of sentient beings in the world, just as the sun can eliminate darkness and bring light. Whether seeing, hearing, or remembering, whether touching or merely speaking words, may it benefit beings in all ways, may they always have happiness. Having thus resolved to accomplish the benefit of others, even if I lose my life, I will be exceedingly joyful, so that the steadfast gods will be amazed, I will abandon my body from there. Then, that tigress heard the sound of the Bodhisattva abandoning his body, and was amazed, released the cub she was devouring, and then looked at him with both eyes.
