Chapter Nineteen: Explanation of Taste and Post-Digestive Effect Chapter Nineteen: Explanation of Taste and Post-Digestive Effect Then, the sage Yid-las-kye (Born from Mind) asked: "O Teacher, Sage of Primordial Awareness, how should one learn the subject of medicinal compounds? Please explain, O King of Physicians, the Life-Sustainer!" Having asked this, the Teacher spoke: "O Great Sage, listen! If one is to learn the subject of medicinal compounds, which are the remedies for healing diseases, then four things are important: taste, post-digestive effect, potency, and methods of combination. First, taste has five aspects: basis, divisions, essence, categories, actions, and forms. The basis arises from the transformation of the five elements: earth provides the foundation, water provides moisture, fire provides warmth, wind provides movement, and space provides openness. Although they arise from these elements, they are mostly not of a single taste. Earth, water, fire; earth, water, fire; water and wind; fire, wind; earth, wind—these two combinations produce the six tastes. Earth medicines are heavy, stable, dull, smooth, oily, and dry; they are hard, substantial, and astringent, and they pacify wind disorders. Water medicines are fluid, cool, heavy, dull, oily, and soft; they are moist, gentle, and astringent, and they pacify bile disorders. Fire medicines are hot, sharp, dry, rough, light, oily, and mobile; they generate warmth, ripen, and produce color, and they pacify phlegm disorders. Wind medicines are light, mobile, cold, rough, pale, and dry; they are hard, promote movement, and have a dispersing effect, and they pacify phlegm and bile disorders. Space is generally pervasive in the medicines of the four elements; it opens up empty spaces and pacifies combined disorders. Therefore, due to the power of combination with substances, there is nothing on earth that is not medicine. Medicines that draw upward are fire and wind, while those that move downward arise from earth and water. Purgative medicines mostly arise from the first taste. The tastes are sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent. In order, they are nourishing and powerful. The essence is heavy and clear, hence it is called taste. When the sweet taste is experienced, it lingers in the mouth and creates craving because of its deliciousness. The sour taste makes the teeth tingle, is astringent, and causes salivation. The salty taste feels hot upon contact and gathers saliva. The bitter taste cleanses bad breath and suppresses appetite. The pungent taste burns the mouth and tongue and causes tears to flow. The astringent taste lingers on the tongue and palate and feels rough. Separately explaining the medicinal categories of the six tastes: Sweet woody medicines include grapes, saffron, cardamom, and so on, as well as dong ga ra, mannye, nye shing, lcha ba, and so on, and also rock candy, molasses, honey, meat, and butter, and so on. These and similar ones are the category of sweet medicines. Se 'bru, star bu, se
