Chapter Thirteen: Daily Conduct Chapter Thirteen: Daily Conduct Then, the sage Yid-las-kyes asked, "O great sage Rigpa Yeshe, how should one train in the conduct of actions? Please, O King of Physicians who sustains life, explain." The Teacher replied, "O great sage, listen! To heal diseases, there are three types of conduct to be learned: daily conduct, seasonal conduct, and occasional conduct." Among these, the daily conduct includes the conduct of ordinary people and practitioners for longevity. First, for the conduct of ordinary people for longevity, to always be happy and prolong life, one should hold the secret mantra of supreme precious accomplishments. (Tibetan: གསང་སྔགས།, Sanskrit Devanagari: mantra, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: mantra, Chinese literal meaning: true words) Always remember and avoid the two causes of disease. Avoid evil deeds of body, speech, and mind, and practice virtue. Do not torment the senses such as the tongue, and do not pursue pleasure. Avoid riding on suspicious boats or untamed animals, and avoid dangerous places such as slaughterhouses, great rivers, and piles of fire. Avoid climbing cliffs and treetops in summer and winter. When sitting, examine the ground; when walking, examine the path. At night, when there is important business, carry a stick and go with companions. Do not oversleep at night, rest comfortably. Do not stay awake all night, do fasting in the morning, and sleep half-awake. For those who are drunk, exhausted, sad, and overworked, and for those who talk too much, are old, and are fearful, because the saliva is rough and the night is short, it depletes the body's strength, increases wind, and causes changes, so sleeping during the day is beneficial because it becomes oily and heavy. Otherwise, sleeping during the day increases phlegm, causing swelling, lethargy, headache, backache, and fever. When there is too much sleep, one should vomit, fast, and associate with women. When one cannot sleep, one should drink milk, yogurt, wine, and meat broth. Massage the head and fill the ears with oil. Avoid sleeping with women of low birth, different residences, or who have owners. Avoid sexual intercourse with ugly women, pregnant women, weak women, dangerous women, and women during menstruation. In winter, one can enjoy sex freely without restrictions. In spring and autumn, enjoy it every two weeks, and in summer, every half month. Otherwise, indulging in sex damages the senses, causing dizziness and untimely death. Regularly applying oil massage can eliminate aging, fatigue, and wind. Pay special attention to the head, feet, and ears. When the body is light, fat is reduced, digestion is promoted, and heat is generated, exercise moderately. Engage in hard exercises and work appropriately.

Wickedness becomes worse than that. The old, children, and those with wind-bile diseases should be abandoned. The strong should eat oily food, especially during winter and spring. Those with phlegm should engage in gentle activities. Wiping the body clears phlegm and digests fat, making the skin clear and the limbs strong is the best. Bathing increases appetite, warmth, strength, and the radiance of life, relieving itching, sweat odor, discomfort, thirst, and body heat. Washing the head with warm water depletes the strength of hair and eyes. Those with diarrhea, bloating, colds, indigestion, and nose and eye diseases should immediately abstain from eating. The eye is of the nature of fire, destroying phlegm. To prevent excessive tearing, use the eye medicineསྐྱེར་ཁཎྜ (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Literal Chinese meaning). Usually, after seven days, apply it once a day. For the sudden enemies of the five diseases, do not rely on conveyance, but always maintain balance, without being biased. Therefore, I should dwell and walk day and night, always maintaining mindfulness to reduce suffering. Following worldly ethics is the foundation of all virtues. Emphasize the essence of what is being said and enrich the words with meaning. Even if bad deeds are destined, try to reverse them. Even if good deeds are delayed, strive to do them. Deal with destructive things first, and then proceed to create a good future. Do not easily believe rumors, but examine them carefully before making a judgment. Think before you speak, and adhere to your core principles. Do not listen to women's words, keep secrets heavy. Be kind and amiable to those close to you, speak frankly, and do not beat around the bush. Be steady in dealing with people, and be quick in associating with them, so that you can feel comfortable. Do not indulge enemies, but conquer them with long-term strategies. Care for the relatives around you, and remember past kindnesses. Respect teachers, fathers, uncles, and other elders. Maintain harmony with fellow villagers, friends, and those you need to associate with, and be in harmony with their minds. Farming should be meticulous, and at times, it should be rough. Admit your mistakes and failures, and know when to stop when you win. Be humble when you are talented, and be content when you are rich. Do not mistreat slaves, and do not be jealous of those who are stronger than you. Do not associate with bad people, do not trust sorcerers and Bonpos, and do not be enemies with them. Do not covet other people's property, do not be greedy for cheap things, and avoid making oaths. Do things that you will not regret, and do not give power to bad people. Maintain inner integrity, be broad-minded, have a long-term vision, and lay a good foundation. Most things are best done on schedule at the appropriate time. Even if you are alone like this, do not lose your autonomy. Even the body of a slave can become the leader of many people. Next, is the practice of the sacred Dharma, for the sake of all sentient beings who desire happiness.
