Chapter Five: Showing the Nature of the Body Chapter Five: Showing the Nature of the Body Then, the wise sage of knowledge spoke thus: "O great sage, listen! The nature of the body is twofold: the elements to be harmed and the faults that harm. These three—disease, bodily essence, and impurities—rely on each other, depending on each other. They are the root of arising, abiding, and ceasing, hence the name 'body.' First, among the elements to be harmed, there are distinctions: fire-heat, the manner of transformation, and the time of fruition. The divisions of what is to be harmed are essence and impurities, two types. The bodily essences are said to be seven: subtle essence, blood, flesh, fat, bone, marrow, and semen. Impurities are also feces, urine, sweat, and so forth. Among these, subtle essence causes the harmed to increase. Blood moistens and sustains life, flesh covers, fat lubricates, and bones support. Marrow transforms nutrients, and semen holds the fetus. Feces and urine expel decay from the support, and sweat softens the skin and stabilizes the hairs. What is called 'fire-heat' is the basis of digestion, referring to the bile that performs digestion. It is the heat of all diseases, bodily essences, and impurities. It increases freedom from disease, diligence, radiance, life, bodily essence, and the power of fire-heat. The place of digestion is the entrance, the door of the food passage. When it is powerful, it digests and goes downwards; when it is weak, undigested food arises. Fire-heat is the cause that makes food, bodily essence, and radiance increase in strength, because undigested subtle essence and so forth do not increase. By means of light and warm food, drink, and conduct, strive to guard the fire-heat, and if it can be maintained, the body's strength and life will be maintained. The way fire-heat digests food is as follows: food and drink are placed in the stomach by the life-wind, liquid breaks it down, and oil lubricates it. The bile that digests is blown by the fire-equal wind, and it is boiled like medicine in the place of the stomach. First, whatever of the six tastes of food and drink is eaten, is digested by the phlegm that mashes, producing a sweet, foamy taste, thus creating phlegm. In the middle, the digesting bile melts it, producing a sour taste with heat, thus creating bile. Finally, the fire-equal wind separates the essence and dregs, turning into an astringent taste, thus creating wind. The qualities of food endowed with the five elements make the body's elements
