The Four Syllables of Mahamudra. The Four Syllables of Mahamudra. The so-called Four Syllables of Mahamudra: First, cutting off the root of the mind; second, showing the method of abiding; third, cutting off wrong paths; and fourth, carrying it onto the path. Cutting off the root is: Examining the arising, dwelling, and going of this mind, there is no arising, because it does not arise from a single cause or a collection of causes, therefore it is inherently separate from all roots. There is no dwelling, because it has no shape or color. When all appearances and luminosity have not ceased, the extent of this arising is only empty arising, and the extent of appearance is only empty appearance, so it is certain that nothing is established. There is no going, because there is no place to go. There is not even a trace of where it has gone. It is impossible for it to exist, and even if it is not found, it is definitely not somewhere. Thus, all appearances are self-liberated, and all movements are self-liberated, which is inherently so. This liberation is not initially produced by a cause, so it cannot increase or decrease due to good or bad conditions in the middle. In the end, it will never be destroyed by conditions. For example, like the sky, it is impartial, so it pervades all phenomena and exists equally. If one can determine within oneself that there has never been a real object, then such a person is an infinite Buddha, as has been repeatedly said. This is such a state, this great place of self-nature that does not abide anywhere, is the Dharmakaya of mind itself. There are six methods of showing how to abide: Like a great garuda soaring in the sky, without reliance, without attachment, in the uncreated, natural state, the awareness abides without effort or striving, this is one. Like the ocean without waves, the awareness abides without movement or agitation, this is two. Like the sun and moon free from clouds, the awareness abides with all-illuminating self-radiance, this is three. Like a young child placed in a temple, the aspect of clarity is never interrupted, but there is no grasping or attachment, this is four. Like a water wave dissolving into water, knowing that all movements of arising sensations are only the radiance of awareness, and that nothing else is established, abiding without affirmation or negation, this is five. Like bird tracks that cannot appear in the sky, no matter what good or bad conditions arise, such as happiness or suffering, they cannot benefit or harm the awareness in the slightest, abiding in this state of certainty, relaxed and at ease, this is six. Any one of these six is sufficient. There are five ways to cut off wrong paths. The ultimate, free from elaboration, awareness and the great liberation of the view, meditation, and fruition of a yogi, this

If you boast of practice and despise cause and effect, the gate to liberation will naturally close, which is extremely bad. Contemplate the biographies of past enlightened beings, and do not despise even the slightest sinful thought, but properly adopt and abandon, this is one. Confirm that all external appearances are like dreams and illusions, in which there is no possibility of even a particle of true existence, and without attachment to the seen objects, treat all good and bad circumstances of feelings such as pleasure and pain equally in the mind, this is two. No matter how good the yogi's inner experiences and qualities are, they have never actually existed, and what wise person would believe in illusory wonders? Do not be like children chasing rainbows or shallow people who are self-righteous, be without attachment and without grasping, and let it dissipate naturally, this is three. Since there are hells and other bad places, why worry about bad things and bad circumstances? There is nothing worse than ignorance. If you search for ignorance in this Mahamudra self-aware nature and cannot find it, then settle the doubt in the fundamental state of no support, this is four. Since there are Buddhas and other good things, why expect good things and good circumstances? There is nothing better than the self-aware nature Dharmakaya. "Three bodies" and "four bodies," etc., it is impossible to establish any entity with substantial characteristics in the face of awareness, so do not bind your mind with the rope of conceptual thoughts and desires, but settle in the natural state, these five are profound methods for cutting off deviations. There are six ways to apply it on the path: In the objects of the root consciousness, whether good, bad, or neutral appear, be sure that everything that appears is like an illusion and a dream, without self-nature. Whatever appears, take it as the unborn Dharma to practice, which is called "increasing appearances during the day." Before going to sleep, focus awareness on the white "Ah" (Tibetan: ཨཱཿ, Devanagari: आः, Romanized Sanskrit: āḥ, Literal meaning: Ah) in the heart, which is the essence of the root guru and one's own mind, without letting the mind wander. This is the method to obtain luminosity, which is called "consciousness entering the vase." During breaks such as at dawn, according to the oral instructions of the virtuous teacher and the explanations of the scriptures, observe and analyze the common Dharma and one's own nature, etc., as detailed as possible, and repeatedly exercise the power of the mind, which is called "awareness self-illumination."
