Oral Transmission Records. Oral Transmission Records. The term "alaya" has two meanings. Firstly, the alaya in its essential meaning refers to the Tathagatagarbha. It is the causal body and the blueprint of wisdom of the stainless Dharmadhatu ocean. Secondly, the impure samsaric alaya is the blueprint of the contaminated dharma, mainly the eight consciousness aggregates and the fifty-one mental factors, along with the eighty subtle conceptualizations. The alaya is like a vessel that accumulates the imprints of previous thoughts and serves as the basis for the arising of subsequent thoughts. The alaya-consciousness is the basis for the arising of the five sense consciousnesses, the mind consciousness, and the afflicted mind. The alaya-consciousness does not fall into any side such as existence or non-existence, and it focuses on the vast container and its contents. It does not distinguish the colors of objects, such as white or blue. The nature of the alaya itself is such that the waves of coarse conceptualizations are calmed, like an ocean without waves. If one single-pointedly abides in it and becomes accustomed to it, one will be born in the formless realm. If one becomes very familiar with the clarity of awareness itself, the self-luminosity that is not hidden from one's own mind, one will not be born in the five pure abodes among the seventeen abodes of the form realm. Below that, there is the higher realm with the twelve ordinary grounds. Due to the decreasing force of habit, one is thrown into the lower form realms. The alaya is without thought, so it is like a cloudless sky. It is very difficult to realize because it is peaceful, profound, and extremely subtle in nature, holding the imprints of previous consciousness and serving as the basis for subsequent consciousness. This is like the oral transmission of Lama Adzom, Nyakla, and Chakong. The Omniscient Great One said: Like when calling out to someone, the moment the consciousness does not think of anything and remains in an unspecified state, that is the alaya. After that, the appearance does not cease, it is clear and bright, but there is no clinging to it, so that state of clarity without thought is the alaya-consciousness. Lama Nyakla said: When a person carries a heavy burden and runs and runs, and then rests in the middle of a large plain, the stream of thoughts stops due to the force of exhaustion, and being in a state of non-thought, that is the alaya.

It is said to be so. From the Alaya-vijñana arises the five sense consciousnesses. From that arises the conceptual consciousness. From that arises the afflicted mind. It is not possible for the five senses to be fully present simultaneously until the conceptual mind and the afflicted mind have ceased. The conceptual mind and the afflicted mind are coarse, the five sense consciousnesses are subtle, and the Alaya-vijñana is extremely subtle. The Alaya-vijñana has the aspect of arising and ceasing, the five sense consciousnesses have the aspect of arising, and the conceptual mind and the afflicted mind both have the aspect of grasping and being grasped. Moreover, the aspect of consciousness is that, for example, the eye consciousness clearly sees forms without obstruction, and the five sense consciousnesses are of such an aspect. When do these consciousnesses cease? For ordinary people, they cease during sleep, fainting, and death. Other than that, they do not cease individually. The order in which they cease is that first the afflicted mind ceases, then the conceptual mind, then the five senses, and then the Alaya-vijñana must cease. Among these, as long as the Alaya-vijñana has not ceased, there will be no sleep, fainting, or death. When these cease, whichever system it is, Nyingma, Mahamudra, or Dzogchen, the ground luminosity will actually appear. At that time, if one recognizes one's own nature, it is called recognizing the luminosity. If one does not recognize one's own nature, it is ignorance, delusion, or non-specified. When a yogi experiences luminosity during meditation, they recognize it in dreams. If they recognize it there, they will recognize the luminosity at the time of death and be liberated. Furthermore, at the time of the cessation of the Shravakas, at the time of the Samadhi of the Bodhisattva Aryas, and at the time when the dualistic appearance disappears for the Mantrayana practitioners, at these three times the eight consciousnesses cease. Otherwise, if the five sense consciousnesses and the conceptual and afflicted minds cease, there will be no actions of virtue or vice. From the Root Tantra of the Sound Tantra: Undistracted meditation is, the doors of the senses are clear. This means that when all five senses are present simultaneously, there is a state of abiding. If clarity does not arise in that state of abiding, one will be reborn as an animal. If clarity arises but relaxation does not, one will be bound by the chains of clinging to oneself. The way to relax is to relax sometimes and tighten sometimes. If one does this alternately, relaxation will arise in about seven or eight days.
