Distinguishing Mind and Awareness. Distinguishing Mind and Awareness. The clear light of awareness is like glands within the flesh, or gold dust within the soil. It is necessary to recognize the mind, the eight aggregates of consciousness, and the fifty-one mental factors. Oh, it is impossible for sense faculties and consciousness to have a common basis. How could something be both material and conscious? One cannot see objects through pure particles, like a lamp and a glass tube. When the eyes are closed, consciousness does not cease, but the door of the senses is closed. Consciousness also, if the senses are blocked, will not arise, this is a necessary logic. Even without concepts, the mind consciousness undergoes arising and ceasing. When the primary mind, the consciousness of mind, expands, the three of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality are also the cause of arising in the three realms of samsara. Mind consciousness is like, if it is clear about an object, one says it is clear, but it does not recognize its own nature through clarity. Mind and mental factors must arise dependent on four conditions. If there is no prior cause like the previous consciousness, or no prior consciousness, it will not be allowed to arise. For example, the causal condition. If the previous consciousness ceases and the opportunity for the subsequent consciousness to arise is not opened, it will not arise. Therefore, is that which arises immediately the immediate condition? If there is no dominant condition, that is, the senses, it will not arise, this is a necessary logic, so is it the dominant condition? If there is no object like a blue lotus, there will be no object for the blue-perceiving eye consciousness to arise, so is it the objective condition? Therefore, you, the basis of all and the consciousness of the basis of all, although you are clear and have the characteristic of knowing awareness, you do not know the particulars. Merely grasping the general, facing outward towards the objects of various appearances, is foolish and deluded. When the mind consciousness grasps an object like a pillar, it will not allow another consciousness to arise. When the primary mind, the eye consciousness and the mind consciousness, are focused on form, that is what is called the uncertainty of other appearances. The mind consciousness, between arising and not yet disappearing, will prevent the arising of other consciousnesses, thus hindering the opportunity for arising. All arising of concepts is prevented when only one mind consciousness arises. When not arisen, it is non-existent. If it arises, it is consciousness itself that arises. If it does not exist, it is oneself that disappears. Other than that, there is no other existence. Oh, now emptiness.

It is necessary to understand that within the state of being present, there exists a knowing that is not mistaken. It does not need to arise from four conditions; it is not conditioned. Conditioned things arise from four conditions; they are interdependent arising. It cannot be said that awareness is not interdependent arising; it manifests in an uninterrupted interdependent manner. Even when appearances arise from the realm of clear light awareness, they arise from inherent capacity, not independently. For example, even the rays of a lamp's flame, the light does not harm the lamp, and the lamp does not harm the light. Similarly, no matter how much light appears in the realm of clear light awareness, it does not harm the basis of appearance. There is no need for harm; like a beautiful goddess adorned with ornaments, because it arises from inherent capacity, the capacity becomes more radiant, and the strength becomes better. Even if someone has gone before you, you do not disappear. Similarly, no matter how much appears, it appears in a separate way. The mind consciousness is like a person walking on their own; if staying, it is oneself; if walking, it is also oneself alone. When awareness has not lost its autonomy, the three—bliss, clarity, and non-thought—are also called the experience of the three kayas. The experience of the three kayas is equal to the limit of space. That is its meaning. At that time, the object and the subject, along with the mind and mental factors, are the play of wisdom. The so-called play from inherent capacity, for example, the eye consciousness plays with form. If deities are visualized as father and mother, the eye consciousness is like the father, and form is like the mother, playing with each other. For example, if it is like a lamp, even if there is a tree inside and thousands of feathers outside, it burns with the nature of one flame. Mind and awareness have only the difference of appearance and darkness. Awareness is like placing a lamp inside a house, it becomes clear and bright. From inherent capacity, wisdom, compassion, faith, etc., naturally increase. The mind is ignorance, sudden, with defilements, with clinging, and one is behind the other. The state of being alone and pure is absolutely not the case. When in the state of awareness, the mind and mental factors must appear as the nature of wisdom. For example, if a pile of grass needs to be burned by fire.
