Instructions on Practicing the Great Perfection Path Instructions on Practicing the Great Perfection Path To practice this profound path, there are three aspects: preliminary practices, main practices, and subsequent practices. First, within the preliminary practices, there is a sequence of training in the three doors. First, in order to reverse the attachment to the body and eliminate obstacles, one goes to a secluded and uninhabited empty place. One supplicates the wisdom and worldly protectors, entrusting them with the task of averting obstacles on the ground and path. Then, in order to liberate all sentient beings of the three realms from the darkness of suffering in existence, one generates the mind, saying, "I will distinguish between samsara and nirvana, and in one lifetime and one body, I will attain the state of Samantabhadra." Then, from the body of the guru visualized on the crown of the head, countless rays of light emanate. As they enter the body from the crown of the head, one contemplates that diseases, evil spirits, sins, obscurations, habitual tendencies, and the substantial aggregate of flesh and blood are all dissolved into non-existence. Then, within the great bindu endowed with the five wisdoms, one transforms one's own body into a blue vajra, with fangs bared. One joins the palms of the hands above the head, elbows pointing outwards, soles of the feet together, and knees also pointing outwards. One contemplates that flames blaze and radiate heat on the outer layer of the bindu. The pure recollection of this is: the three points upwards represent the three: essence, nature, and compassion; the three points downwards represent the three kayas: dharmakaya, sambhogakaya, and nirmanakaya; and the waist being drawn together as one represents the inseparability of method and wisdom. The earlier and later postures involve lying supine, and performing the actions with the body and recollecting purity as before. By diligently applying oneself in this way for forty days, one may see the body as a burning vajra, and obstacles will be pacified. Ultimately, the obscurations of the body will be purified, and one will awaken to buddhahood in the play of the vajra body. Second, in order to reverse the attachment to speech, one trains in speech. The great secret of the speech of the guru visualized on the crown of the head, in the form of five-colored light rays, dissolves into one's own throat, thereby purifying all impure channels, winds, elements, diseases, evil spirits, and habitual tendencies of obscurations with the sound "Sang." One visualizes one's own body as Vajrapani, the lord of secrets, large in stature and with coarse limbs, appearing as vast as the sky, yet without inherent existence, like a rainbow in the sky.

Meditate in such a way that by uttering the sound of Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Meaning: Hūṃ), the letter Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Meaning: Hūṃ) emits white, yellow, red, and green colors in sequence from blue, transforming all the stable and moving things in the realm of existence into the play of Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Meaning: Hūṃ). Think that all the empty realms, which appear but have no inherent nature, like a rainbow, are filled with Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Meaning: Hūṃ). Also, slowly recite the song of Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Meaning: Hūṃ) in your speech, and all the Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Meaning: Hūṃ) enter your mouth, transforming all the channels and winds of your body into the nature of Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Meaning: Hūṃ). Meditate that your own body is a collection of particles of the letter Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Meaning: Hūṃ), and sing a beautiful song with the slow sound of Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Meaning: Hūṃ). During this time, it is crucial not to let the focus stray elsewhere. By staying in that state for ten days and then practicing, you can temporarily eliminate obstacles that prevent the channels and winds from functioning properly. Ultimately, you will purify the obscurations of speech, attain beautiful sounds, and awaken to the play of Vajra speech. The third is taming the mind: Keep the body still, like a corpse in a charnel ground. Keep speech free from words, like a mute. Keep the mind like a clear sky, without fabrication or alteration. Sometimes, make an angry expression and loudly utter Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Meaning: Hūṃ) Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Meaning: Hūṃ), and let appearances be without support. Sometimes, in the state of being endowed with the seven dharmas of Vairochana, leave the mind uncorrected and relax into a state of looseness. By alternately practicing in this way, you can purify the obscurations of the mind. The wisdom of self-arising is seen, therefore the correct Dharma is needed. O Vajra of Awareness, listen well and keep it in mind. Next is the order of actually practicing, the practice of the great transference, which is the nature of my eye, direct perception, miraculous powers, and great power: The key to the body is to rely on postures such as a lion intimidating a dragon, an elephant lying comfortably, and a sage observing the land. Know that the way of looking is first upwards, second straight ahead, and third downwards. The key to speech is to learn to slow the flow of breath from the gap where the lips and teeth do not touch. Stop all speech and recitation, and comfortably remain in a natural state. The key to the mind is to relax and remain loose. These three are the way to settle into the three kayas. The body is like a corpse in a charnel ground.
