The pain is extreme, and even if I wanted to make amends, there is no way to do so. I advise everyone to encourage their parents to recite the Buddha's name while they are alive. After their parents pass away, dedicate three years to reciting the Buddha's name for them. If that is not possible, then one year, or even forty-nine days, is acceptable. A filial child who wishes to repay the kindness of their parents' nurturing must know this.", "Those Who Have Attained Enlightenment Should Especially Seek Rebirth in the Pure Land", "Someone asked: 'So-and-so has been practicing the Pure Land method. A Chan practitioner said, 'It is enough to realize one's own Buddha-nature; why seek other Buddhas externally and vow to be reborn?' What is the meaning of this?' I say that this is indeed the highest teaching, but clinging to it can also lead to error. Allow me to illustrate with an analogy. Suppose there is someone as intelligent as Yan Hui (Confucius's favorite disciple), and hundreds or thousands of miles away, there is a sage like Confucius, propagating his teachings. Seventy disciples and three thousand worthy individuals gather around him. You hear of his name and go to see him. Would you not gain more by doing so? Would it be acceptable to rely on your own intelligence and refuse to pay homage?' Although one has attained enlightenment, if one is unwilling to be reborn in the Pure Land, I dare say that you have not truly attained enlightenment. Why? Chan Master Tianru said, 'You simply have not yet awakened. If you were awakened, then your resolve to be reborn in the Pure Land could not be deterred by ten thousand oxen.' How profound are these words!", "The Pure Land Cannot Be Said to Not Exist", "Some say that there is only the Pure Land of Mind, and that there is no Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss beyond the ten trillion Buddha-lands. This idea of the Pure Land of Mind originally comes from the sutras and is truly not false. However, those who cite it misunderstand its meaning. Mind is identical to realm, and realm is identical to mind. Ultimately, there is no realm outside of the mind, and no mind outside of the realm. Since the realm is entirely mind, why must one cling to the mind and reject the realm? To speak of the mind while dismissing the realm is not to have understood the mind. Or, some say: 'The Pure Land seen at the time of death is all a manifestation of one's own mind, so there is no Pure Land.' These people do not consider that throughout history, those who have recited the Buddha's name and been reborn in the Pure Land have seen the holy assembly coming to greet them at the time of death, along with heavenly music, fragrant scents, banners, and pavilions. If only that one person saw it, it could be said to be a manifestation of their own mind. But at that time, the entire assembly saw these phenomena together. Some heard the heavenly music faintly receding towards the west, and some smelled the fragrant scent in the room, which lingered for many days. The heavenly music did not recede in any other direction, but towards the west. That person has already passed away, and the fragrant scent remains. Can it be said that there is no Pure Land? Zen Master Yuanzhao Ben, people saw his name appear in the lotus ranks. Could it be said that someone else's mind is being used as Zen Master Yuanzhao's mind? Furthermore, I ask you, when the visions of hell appear at the time of death," ] } ``` -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 者。 ], "english_translations": [ "English version", "'(The questioner asked:) 'Isn't (hell) manifested by the mind?' (The answer:) 'Yes, it is manifested by the mind.' Will that person fall into hell? (The answer:) 'Yes, they will fall into hell.' Since one falls into hell, then the existence of hell is clear. Is there no Pure Land? If the mind manifests hell, then one falls into a real hell. If the mind manifests Pure Land, then doesn't one get reborn in a real Pure Land? Rather say there is one as big as Mount Sumeru (the Pure Land), than say there is none as small as a mustard seed. Be warned! Be warned!'", "Pure Land Everywhere", "Some say, 'It's not that I don't believe in Pure Land, nor that I despise Pure Land and don't want to be reborn there. It's just that where I go is different from others. If there's a Buddha in the East, I'll go East. If there's a Buddha in the West, I'll go West. In all directions, up and down, in heaven and hell, wherever there's a Buddha, I'll go there. I'm not like the Tiantai (T'ien-t'ai) school or Yongming Yanshou (Yung-ming Yen-shou) and others who seek Pure Land, who must single-mindedly go to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.' This saying sounds very lofty, its meaning is very profound, and its principle is very mysterious, but it cannot be used to instruct beginners. The scriptures say, 'Like a weak bird, it can only perch on a branch.' Then know that only when the wings are fully formed, the body is strong, and the breath is vigorous, can one soar in the sky and fly freely in all directions. This is not something that someone who has just aroused the Bodhi mind can do. When Shakyamuni Buddha showed the sixteen contemplations to Lady Vaidehi, he first had her contemplate the setting sun and the suspended drum to fix her mind on the West. And the ancient virtuous monks sat and lay down without forgetting to face West. Did they not know that there are Buddha lands in every direction? Only those who have attained great liberation can go wherever they please. If not, then one should respectfully follow the Buddha's teachings.", "The Delusion of Being Separated by the Womb", "The ancients said, 'Even the Shravakas (Śrāvaka) are still confused about the experience of leaving the womb, and Bodhisattvas are still confused about the experience of being separated by the womb.' At first, I suspected that Shravakas already possessed the six supernormal powers, and Bodhisattvas cultivated both meditation and wisdom, so how could they be confused? Could they not avoid it? When I examined myself and consulted others, I found that I suddenly forgot what happened last night by the next morning, let alone being separated by the womb. When I moved to a new room, I got up at night and didn't know which direction was north or south, let alone leaving the womb. The confusion of those sages is a temporary confusion that will soon be cleared up; it is a brief confusion that will gradually be awakened from. But we ordinary people are always in a state of confusion and do not realize it. Abandoning one body and receiving another body, the advantages and disadvantages are like this. For the sake of the present plan, one must maintain a firm and correct mind, and not allow the mind to lose its awareness for even a moment. And one must earnestly and sincerely seek rebirth in Pure Land. If one is reborn in Pure Land, then there is no need to worry about confusion. If one both indulges one's mind and denies Pure Land, then it is dangerous!", "Vow Power", "Duke Lü Wenzheng (Lü Mengzheng) (941-1014) would worship the Buddha every morning and pray, saying, 'Those who do not believe in the Three Jewels, I hope they will not be born into my family. I hope that my descendants will enjoy salaries and protect the Buddha Dharma for generations.' Later, the Lü family produced people like Lü Gongzhu and Lü Haowen.
