Consciousness belonging to the fruition of each of the four paths are ^Resultant consciousness of the 1st path (Sotapatti phala cittan ®0C3®JCt^ e© ©iSKS^o). 2. Resultant consciousness of the 2nd path (Sakadagami phala cittan COa<^QD0® e© ®e556)o). 3. Resultant consciousness of the 3rd path (Anagami phala cittan qp:S?D<S)3® ^O ®C5e)o). 4. Resultant consciousness of the 4th path (Arahatta phala cittan ^dODOtoa OQ ©eX53o). RESULTANT CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE 1st path. I. Resultant consciousness of the ist path is that state of consciousness immediately following the one belonging to the path of stream attainment and is called the s5tapatti phala cittan (®9C5t5X9 ^Q ®t5^05^). Consciousness of the path is moral, and resultant consciousness should be understood as the resulting effects or fruition of the path. The resulting 54 •effects of moral consciousness in Kamaloka and soon occur either in the same existence or any other future existences after lapse of time. The resulting effects or fruition of transcendental consciousness (lokottara (©(jD^eO'^Oe^d) take place at the very next moment following Path consciousness. Hence Akaliko (qp5aag®3) one of the attributes of the Dhamma. RESULTANT CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE 2ND PATH. Consciousness immediately following that belonging to the path of once-returning is the fruition or resulting effects of the path of once-returning (Sakadagami phala cittan eoi®<5>®3® ^(3 ^ SXS^o). Here too the path is moral consciousness and fruition is the resulting effects. RESULTANT CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE 3RD PATH. Consciousness immediately following that belonging to the path of never-returning is the fruition or resulting effects of the path of never-returning (Anagami phala cittan qp?539®5® ^C ^O>e>o). Here too the path is moral consciousness and fruition is the resulting effects. RESULTANT CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE 4TH PATH. Resultant consciousness immediately following the one belonging to the path of Arahatship is the fruition or resulting effects of the path of Arahatship (Arahatta phala cittan <|pd5 0j^ 0(5 ©e5G)o). Here too, the path is moral and fruition the result. These four classes of transcendental moral consciousness arise only once and never twice, and therfore there is no class of transcendental ineffective consciousness (lokottara kriya cittan 55 FUNCTIONS OF THE FOUR PATHS. Each of the paths performs four functions at one and the same time (i) discerning the truth of suffering (z) expelling the truth of its cause (3) realising the truth of its cessation and (4) cultivating the truth of the way to cessation. How four functions can be performed at the same moment is explained by the following illustration of lighting an oil lamp. When an oil lamp is lit, four phenomena occur vi^(i) disappearance of darkness (2) diffusion of light (^) extinction of oil and (4) extinction of the wick, at the same moment. In each of the paths it is (the cetasikapaiiiia) knowledge amounting to insight coexisting in the class of consciousness belonging to the paths^ that acts as the light which realizes the four ariyan truths. After the Path-consciousness two or three moments of conscious- ness of fruition take place according to the degree of insight in the individual, after which there comes subsidence into the life continuum. Then again the life continuum is interrupted and the knowledges concerned with " review " (paccavekkhana fianani C©e) ®9ej:6)®s5 ^4l3 8$^) occur. The individual who has gained the fruition of the first three paths does not realise the four ariyan truths just like the reappearance of darkness after extinguishing the light of a lamp. But in the case of one who has gained the fruition of the path belonging to Arahatship, the cetasika paniia (S^tsSsS^ C£^^S£^) coexisting therein remains always the same realising the four ariyan truths right through the rest of his life till he attains Pari Nibbana. Note i. Paccavekkhana iianani ^;c£€) 9QfS£^^ ^^d$Q). The ariya now (i) reviews tiie path he has just attained (2) the fruit of that path he has just enjoyed (]) the Nibbana he has intuited, though not quite realised, as an object of the con- sciousness of the path and of fruition. The remaining torments- (upakkilesas C^^^®C5^) he may or may not realise. i( Catumaggappabhedena catuddha kusalan tatha Pakan tassa phalattati atthadhanuttaran matan " 8ce@c5^cx:3®es)@;tfl ©t^©3 Gi5^ac ®^* 4t 5<> Four are the paths, hence, four kinds of thoughts, Four fruits, hence, four resultant kinds we're taught, Eight states in all when highest things are ought. Here the 89 classes of consciousness are analyzed into 121 classes by seers. How can consciousness that is analyzed into eightynine come to have one hundred and twenty one classes ? 57 TRANSCENDENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS BECOMING FORTY. By resolving each of the eight kinds of transcendental con- sciousness into five, thus obtaining forty kinds in place of eight. In the path of stream-attainment there is a class of consciousness for each of the five stages of Jhana. In the path of once-returning there is a class of consciousness for each of the five stages of Jhana. So for the path of never-returning and of Arahatship, making twenty classes of path consciousness in all. Similarly there are twenty classes of fruition consciousness ; and these together make forty classes of transcendental consciousness. 1 . In the path of stream-attainment there is a class of con- sciousness accompanied by initial application, sustained appli- cation, pleasurable interest, pleasure and one pointedness. 2. In the path of stream-attainment there is a class of con- sciousness accompanied by sustained application, pleasurable interest, pleasure and one pointedness. 3. In the path of stream-attainment there is a class of con- sciousness accompanied by pleasurable interest, pleasure and one pointedness. 4. In the path of stream-attainment there is a class of con- sciousness accompanied by pleasure and one pointedness. 5. In the path of stream attainment there is a class of con- sciousness accompanied by hedonic indifference and one pointed- ness. Similarly five classes in the path of once-returning, five in the path of never-returning and five in the path of Arahatship. THREE WAYS OF COUNTING TRANSCENDENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS There are three ways of counting the classes of transcendental consciousness by way of Jhana vi^ (i) padaka Jhana (Oo^® Ct&50 (2) Sammasita Jhana (®Q05 ct^aao) and (3) Puggala jjhasa Jhana i;QXJDOJ&^3 d&^asO). 58 59 (i) If one, who has cultivated the Jhanas, at first were to induce the 1st stage of Jhana and emerging therefrom contem- plate all conditioned thmgs as impermanent, ill and soul-less and attain the path of stream-attainment, his consciousness belonging to the path is called the path consciousness of stream- attamment by way of ist Jhana (pathamaj jhana sotapatti magga cittan ::d&^:±^i2$^ ®a3ta3 3c:>'>c^ ®J035 Se555<. and con- sciousness of fruition, resultant consciousness of stream-attain- ment by way of ist Jhana (patthamajjhana sotapatti phala cittan ::caD::^)) ®3iS:JOe^ ^(^ ©G>SDo). In like manner by way of 2nd Jhana and so on, and similarly in regard to Path-consciousness of once-returning and so on. This IS by way of Padakaj jhana (03^cS)rj&^a2a) inducuig Jhana. (2) If one without niducing the ist Jhana, were merely to contemplate the factors of the ist Jhana such as initial appli- cation and soon as impermanent, ill and soul-less, and attain the Path-consciousness of stream-attainment, his consciousness is also known as pathamajjhana sotapatti niagga cittan (ed@ees)320 ®C03t3O25>^ ©CT® ^e5255c) and consciousness of fruition pathamajjhana phala cittan (Od^ 2)06^3 SO ^Q ®O^C5.). Similarly with the rest.
