A Letter to the Hermit Namkhai Sengge A Letter to the Hermit Namkhai Sengge The words of Gyalkhampa Tāranātha. A Letter to the Hermit Namkhai Sengge. I am delighted to hear that your practice is progressing. My Dharma is also growing. Regarding the current situation, if I speak a little about topics related to reality, then reality is: There is no need to seek the Buddha of meaning outside, because he has been present in oneself from the beginning. Not only in oneself, but in all sentient beings. Not only in sentient beings, but all appearances, existence, samsara, and nirvana reside in this nature. Relying on the blessings of the guru and the key points of the instructions, if one can know one's own face, then the Dharmakaya that has always been present will cut off the notion of "existence." If it is not like that, even if it exists, it is of no benefit. The way to realize it is: first, by purifying the mind that holds onto inner clinging, one must let the object of clinging itself be self-liberated. If that happens, then what is grasped later will be purified in its own place. Moreover, if there is no fabrication of mindfulness and clinging just by knowing one's own nature, then what need is there to talk about other views? Just awareness, wal-le, flickering, will never cease. To say in words, "It is like this," in accordance with one's own experience, cannot be expressed no matter how one tries. To say with a wandering, discriminating mind, "Understand it like this," cannot be done no matter how one tries. It is neither "this" nor "that." It cannot be encompassed by any place or part of a direction. Even if one thinks it exists in the nature of awareness and knowledge, the momentary nature of self-awareness is: experiencing "knowledge is like this," abiding in "awareness is like this," whether the object of experience and the subject of experience, or the object of awareness and the subject of awareness, none has ever been experienced. This is the very nature of ordinary consciousness, and it is the reality of all dharmas. In the Dharma language of the scriptures, there are terms such as "beyond the realm of sound and thought," as well as "inexpressible," "free from elaboration," "self-aware wisdom of individual awareness," "emptiness," "ultimate truth," and so on, beautiful Dharma terms, and countless pleasant names. In the door of appearances of that which has no defined nature, whether faith and compassion and other virtuous thoughts arise, or the five poisons of afflictions such as desire and hatred arise, or whether the appearances of the unstated, such as thoughts of earth, stones, mountains, and rocks, arise, whatever arises,

From the very moment of arising, one must recognize. What is called recognition is not chasing after the thought that "a thought has arisen" in the second moment after a thought arises in the first moment. Even if it is simultaneous, it is not permissible to assume that it is a thought. If the mind of chasing and assuming does not know itself, it is like telling others to "be quiet" while making a loud noise. It is a deception of assumption and error to presume that another "knowing" can recognize oneself when the one who recognizes does not know himself. So, what is called recognizing one's own face? It is when the arising of thoughts occurs, in that single moment, without any modification, naturally knowing itself, this is called "recognizing oneself." When the movement flows naturally, there is no trace of a bird's path. The movement is naturally pacified, and afflictions are naturally liberated. Here, also, due to the difference in the strength of afflictions, thoughts, and external conditions, some are like clear and transparent thoughts, but cannot be identified, like a reflection in water; some are like the essence being covered by a single radiance. Apart from that, the thought itself cannot be identified. Although the way of appearing is different, there is no difference in essence. There are countless ways of appearing that conform to the mind, without end, and cannot be expressed in words. Therefore, all thoughts are merely the natural manifestation of the original power, and nothing else. So, searching for the self-nature of thoughts cannot be found. When this happens, the second point is that the external objects of attachment are purified, so "appearance self-liberation" will also come along. That is, land, stones, mountains, rocks, trees, forests, enemies, friends, wealth, enjoyment, companions, etc., all that appears internally and externally, in the moment of appearance, is not defiled by the attachment to objects, the moment of appearance, the moment of arising, is self-knowing and self-illuminating. At the time of arising, at the time of clarity, at the time of appearance, there is no distinction of "this is what, this is not what." This is called appearance self-liberation. Just like knowing the scenery in a dream or the image in a mirror, the attachment to things is naturally dissolved. In this way, the inner and outer are naturally purified, which is the meaning of the non-duality of subject and object, which is uninterrupted.
