Rinchen Terdzod (The Treasury of Precious Termas) TD2459: A Practical Guide to the Rosary of Jewels, a Gradual Path of Secret Mantras, Called the Nectar Drop Homage to the Lama, Yidam, Protectors of the Teachings, and all Dharma Protectors. This practical guide to the Rosary of Jewels, a gradual path of Secret Mantras, called the Nectar Drop, has three parts: First, causing the mind to observe itself; second, if seen, pointing out the nature of the mind; third, introducing the meaning of what is seen. First, look for your own mind, where it is, see what it is, and then answer me. If you say: 'The mind is emptiness, there is nothing to see, it cannot be found.' This is not seeing the mind, becoming like an unconscious and unfeeling stone. If you say: 'All that appears is the mind.' This is only seeing the general characteristic of the mind. Now, you have not recognized your own mind that is appearing at this moment. Just like saying 'Those are all people' in a crowd, you are only seeing the general characteristic of people, without recognizing a specific person. Second, pointing out the nature of the mind: It is not enough to see only the general characteristic, you must recognize the mind that is appearing at this moment. Now, sound appears as the mind, and when I say 'Look at what that mind is,' the sound immediately appears in your mind. Look at what 'you' are, that is your own mind. Use the analogy of mother and child to point it out. Apart from it, or saying it is not it, you will not find it by searching elsewhere. When you say 'Look at the mind,' is the mind looking back at the sound, or is the mind grasping the sound? Observe whether sound and mind are inseparable. If you say it like the first two ways, then you have not understood. If you say they are inseparable, then you have understood, and it should be pointed out in this way. Similarly, the appearances of form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and the appearances of gods and demons, etc., are all your own mind. Or, pointing to things like a vase, ask: 'What is this?' If you answer 'It is a vase,' then you have not understood. If you say 'The mind appears as a vase,' then you have seen the nature of the mind. Third, recognizing the meaning of what is seen, divided into three parts: First, recognizing that appearances are naturally liberated; second, the nature is primordially liberated; third, the essence is non-dual. First, instructing on appearances: The individual instructions are, whether it is happiness or suffering, whether it is conceptual thought, or the appearance of ghosts, etc., any one can be instructed. First, whether it is the mind that is looking, or appearing as a ghost --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Is it something external? Or does it abide within one's own mind? Observe it. If you say it is external, that is incorrect. If you say it abides within, then because you have seen its nature, recognize it. If the appearance of a ghost is something external, then it would not appear to oneself. Since it appears and abides within oneself, it is not external. Resolve that it is one's own mind and practice self-appearance. Then, if you recognize it as self-appearance, you will not generate the thought of self-grasping or ghost-grasping. If it arises, it is because you have not yet recognized it as self-appearance, so practice self-appearance. In short, whether it is one's own mind or not is known by whether it appears to oneself or not. Whether you have realized the self or not is known by whether ghost-grasping arises or not. Therefore, apply this to whatever appears. Second, the instruction on introducing emptiness: As with the view of the previous ghost appearance, regarding the mind that appears as self, observe whether its appearances are truly existing with their own inherent nature, or whether their nature is empty. If you say they are truly existing with their own inherent nature, that is incorrect. If you say they are empty, then, is it empty after being drawn back, or is it empty after disappearing? Ask if it is empty in itself. If you say it is like the first two, that is incorrect. If you say it is empty in itself, then because you have seen its nature, introduce it. If the appearance of a ghost, etc., truly exists with its own inherent nature, then it would not cease and others would not arise, but in fact, it ceases and various others arise. Therefore, its nature is empty, so practice emptiness. Therefore, if you recognize it as empty, the appearance of a ghost will not arise. If it arises, it is because you have not yet recognized it as empty, so practice emptiness. Therefore, whether it is empty or not is known by whether the appearance disappears or not. Whether you have realized emptiness or not is known by whether self-grasping arises or not. Third, introducing non-duality: Ask whether this emptiness is nothing at all, or whether it is luminous and aware. If you say it is nothing at all, that is incorrect. If you say it is luminous and aware, then observe whether the previous appearance and emptiness are truly separate or non-dual. If you say they are separate, that is incorrect. If you say they are non-dual, then because you have seen its nature, introduce it. If appearance and emptiness are truly separate, then they must be established as two, but in fact, they are not established. Therefore, appearance and emptiness are non-dual, so practice non-duality. Therefore, if you realize non-duality, dualistic grasping will not arise. If it arises, it is because you have not yet become familiar with it, so practice non-duality. Therefore, whether it is non-dual or not is known by whether it is established as two or not. Whether you have become familiar with non-duality or not is known by whether dualistic grasping arises or not, so ask yourself. Mere understanding is not enough; you need to become skilled. The four instructions on secret conduct, the first is the instruction on loving-kindness: Observe whether sentient beings are your parents or not. If you say they are not, that is incorrect. If you say they are your parents, then you have seen its nature. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
