Rinchen Terdzod (The Great Treasure of Termas) TD2354 Mahamudra Direct Pointing, Wisdom Self-Liberated. Immaculate Queen, Mahamudra. Mahamudra Direct Pointing, Wisdom Self-Liberated. Homage to Orgyen Padmasambhava! Oral Instructions on Mahamudra: Orgyen (Padmasambhava) said: Listen, Tso-kyi (Yeshe Tsogyal)! The oral instructions on Mahamudra, taught as direct pointing, are fourfold: The View of Mahamudra, the Meditation of Mahamudra, the Fruit of Mahamudra, the Conduct of Mahamudra. First, the View of Mahamudra: From the tantra: 'The nature of mind, without contrived alteration, is the View of Mahamudra.' Therefore, without support, without reliance, its essence unborn, its continuity unceasing, its play unceasing, the nature or the abiding reality of all that is knowable is Mahamudra. In this, there are no qualities to cultivate, no faults to eliminate. For example, when a rope is mistaken for a snake, the perception of the snake is a delusion, but the rope itself is not deluded. Once realized, from the moment it appears as a snake, it is the rope itself; there is no need to establish the rope, nor to eliminate the snake. Similarly, the nature of all that is knowable is the nature of Mahamudra, therefore, there is no need to cultivate non-conceptual wisdom, nor to eliminate conceptual thought. At the very moment of conceptual thought, non-conceptual wisdom is nakedly present, not abiding in the extremes of permanence or annihilation, self or other, grasping or being grasped, therefore, it is primordially pure. Second, the Meditation of Mahamudra: From the tantra: 'In the natural state, rest without grasping; this is the Meditation of Mahamudra.' Therefore, when abiding in the natural state, the mind does not grasp at anything; it is beyond thought, beyond expression, it is not, it is not not, there is no contradiction, there is nothing not pervaded, not engaging the mind is the Meditation of Mahamudra. In this, resting in its own way, there is no need to alter it with antidotes, like the ocean and its waves. When waves arise from the great ocean, they arise from the ocean, and when they dissolve, they dissolve into the ocean. The waves are not other than the ocean, and the ocean is not other than the waves; the waves and the ocean are of one taste, coexisting simultaneously. Similarly, the nature of mind, Mahamudra, in its natural state free from thought, the mind does not grasp at anything, naturally resting, whatever conceptual thoughts arise, at the moment of arising, they are free from thought. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since it is inseparable from unerring wisdom, it arises from itself, appears in itself, and dissolves into itself. At that time, regarding the nature of reality, we cannot think 'what is this,' and cannot express it with words. Since it is free from the duality of grasper and grasped, it is not 'existent'; since it appears as all things, it is not 'non-existent'; since it unites the two truths, it has no contradiction; since it pervades all phenomena in a united way, it is all-encompassing. This is called 'primordial self-liberation from the very beginning'. Third, the Fruit Mahamudra (Phyag rgya chen po): The tantra says, 'When the ground itself ripens into the fruit, that is the Fruit Mahamudra.' This means that when the nature or natural state of all knowable things manifests and ripens, it is the Fruit Mahamudra, whose essence is the Dharmakaya (chos kyi sku), along with emptiness (stong nyid) and its accompaniments; whose nature is the Sambhogakaya (longs spyod rdzogs pa'i sku), along with the means of clarity; whose compassion is the Nirmanakaya (sprul pa'i sku), whose spontaneous power never ceases. For example, when the seed ripens into the ear of grain, only the seed itself grows into the ear of grain; there is no ear of grain apart from the seed, and no seed ripens apart from the ear of grain. Similarly, the original, naturally pure mind, naturally liberated in the transformation of various conditions, and transformed into the nature of reality as it is, is called the 'fruit'. The essence of the mind is empty and clear, this uninterrupted state is the Dharmakaya; the experience of the self-luminous nature is inexpressible, this is the Sambhogakaya; the power of compassion manifests as all things and is naturally self-liberated, this is the Nirmanakaya. Fourth, the method of practicing Mahamudra: The tantra says, 'This is for the sake of the stages of blessing, it is the practice of Mahamudra.' This means that, having received this instruction from a lama who possesses lineage, realization, and compassion, from now on, do not regard the lama as anything less than the Dharmakaya Buddha (sangs rgyas chos kyi sku), or even merely as a physical body (gzugs sku), but pray as if merging into him, unable to separate. Through the blessing of the lama, the realization of Mahamudra naturally arises, therefore there is no need to rely on other paths, just one path is sufficient, this is called 'the shortcut practice of Mahamudra'. For example, when the sun has rays, the crystal ball has no cracks or dirt, and the tinder is dry, simply putting them together will naturally produce fire. Similarly, when the blessing of the lama, one's own devotion, and one's own pure mind are gathered together, simply praying will naturally cause the wisdom of Mahamudra to arise. In order to purify one's own mind, first... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
