Da Bao Fu Zang TD1591 Commentary on the Small Mandala: A Refined Golden Elixir General Branch: Mandala Commentary on the Small Mandala: A Refined Golden Elixir The source of glory, the embodiment of glory. To the all-knowing Vajra Acharya (teacher): We, in our ignorance, repeatedly ask: The net of unknowing confusion pervades the mind. May you not contradict your intention, nor interrupt your thought. When entering the path of Secret Mantra Vajrayana: Even without cultivating the knowledge of detailed rituals: Relying solely on the form of the deity: Can one attain liberation in one fell swoop? The Abbot of Oddiyana (Guru Rinpoche) declared: In this immeasurable, beginningless cycle of existence: Countless thoughts, from karma and afflictions: Many habitual tendencies have accumulated in the mindstream: These must be gradually purified. Like a launderer washing clean cloth: Washing repeatedly with many alkaline solutions: Then it can be transformed by all colors. First, establish a solitary place for practice: The mind of the initial practitioner is then workable. Then, by practicing in a charnel ground: It is easy to obtain sustenance, easy to generate weariness: And fear inspires diligence: Secluded from people, blessed by dakinis: Enjoying the five meats and five amritas: To subdue coarse and subtle thoughts, protected by purity. Yakshas and other harmful beings cannot intrude: Harmonizing diseases of wind, bile, and phlegm. The qualities of playing with the secret consort: Experiences arise, and the mind becomes workable. Easy to obtain samaya substances, possessing like-minded companions. Images, scriptures, stupas, and sacred objects: Adorning the place with banners and silk canopies: The dwelling place is delightful, and the gods also bestow blessings. That place of practice becomes endowed with blessings. Arranging mandalas, flowers, and setting out offerings: Invoking the compassion of the Buddhas through the power of aspiration. On a comfortable seat, in the vajra posture: Body and mind at ease, samadhi arises. In the first aeon of the past, a son of the gods: Falling to Jambudvipa (the human realm) due to the exhaustion of life and merit: Purifying the thoughts of dwelling alone. The merit of entering the accumulation of merit: Purifies the sins accumulated in samsara: Attaining the result, accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings. The merit of entering the accumulation of wisdom: Purifying the obscurations of knowledge: Perfecting self-benefit, attaining the Dharmakaya (the body of truth). Vajra. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The merit of meditating on the mandala (Tibetan: ར་གུར) is: it protects from obstacles, makes the mind firm and unwavering, and is a method for purifying the Pure Land of the Nirmanakaya. Demons like Lhas Byin (Tibetan: ལྷས་བྱིན) cannot invade. The necessity of meditating on the five elements in successive layers is: it purifies attachment to the container world, and understands that the four great elements, such as earth, are the four mothers, such as Jyanma. Thus, one knows the basis and the dependent, including the arising of the body. The necessity of meditating on the origin of Dharma is: it is to know that everything arises from emptiness, and it is a method for purifying the Dharmakaya Pure Land. The merit of meditating on the immeasurable palace is: it purifies the conceptual thoughts of houses and dwellings, thereby obtaining the immeasurable palace of the gods, which is the wisdom of purifying the Sambhogakaya Pure Land. Meditating on the seed syllable (Tibetan: ས་བོན་) on the sun and moon lotus seat: In the mother's womb, the father's essence and mother's blood merge into one. When the consciousness of the Bardo merges, it purifies the conceptual thoughts of the ordinary body. Sometimes there is a demon's seat, which is a symbol of subduing demons and obstacles. Through the four ways of birth, such as miraculous birth, one can purify the conceptual thoughts of the four births. When one's own self is clearly visualized as the deity's body, the conceptual thoughts of the ordinary body are purified, and there is no difference from practicing the yoga path. The merit of meditating on the retinue mandala is: it purifies the conceptual thoughts of ordinary retinues, thereby possessing a pure retinue in the Buddha land. Inviting the mandala of the wisdom deity and merging it with oneself without duality has the merit of: the blessings of the deity entering oneself, destroying the conceptual thoughts of good and bad, and differences. Meditating on the wisdom hero (Tibetan: ཡེ་ཤེས་སེམས་དཔའ) in the heart is: to indicate that the nature of mind is wisdom. The necessity of meditating on the Samadhi hero (Tibetan: ཏིང་འཛིན་སེམས་དཔའ) is: it purifies the karmic imprints of the Alaya consciousness, thereby accomplishing the benefit of others effortlessly. The activities of pacifying, increasing, magnetizing, and wrathful are also accomplished by the Samadhi hero. Arranging the mantra garland of mantras in the heart is to show that all activities are accomplished by speech. Blessings of body, speech, and mind, Om (Tibetan: ཨོཾ, Devanagari: ओम्, Romanization: oṃ, Literal meaning: perfection), Ah (Tibetan: ཨཱཿ, Devanagari: आः, Romanization: āḥ, Literal meaning: arising), Hum (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Devanagari: हुं, Romanization: hūṃ, Literal meaning: immovable)! It purifies the conceptual thoughts of body, speech, and mind, and becomes equal to the body, speech, and mind of the Buddhas. The merit of blessing the twelve sources (Tibetan: སྐྱེ་མཆེད) is: by purifying the conceptual thoughts of the eyes, etc., the six types of clairvoyance arise without obstruction. Through the blessing of empowerment of the deity, one can make up for deficiencies, integrate blessings, and it is a means of quickly generating abilities. Adorning the head with the crown of the family lord (Tibetan: རིགས་ཀྱི་བདག་པོ) is to possess body, speech, mind, qualities, and activities. Even if one only meditates on one deity, one can perfect the five families. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
