Collected Teachings of Master Tāranātha JT383 A Self-Commentary on the Prayer "Father of All Buddhas." 20-9 ༄༅། །A Self-Commentary on the Prayer "Father of All Buddhas." ༄། །The Meaning of the Actual Praise. ༄༅། །A Self-Commentary on the Prayer "Father of All Buddhas. ༄༅། །Oṃ Svasti! Father of all Buddhas, Son of the Buddhas. Abandoning all saṃsāra and nirvāṇa, Lord of all saṃsāra and nirvāṇa. Glorious Cakrasaṃvara in the form of a lama. I pray to the feet of the Protector Tārā. Here, in explaining the meaning of the praise, there is the meaning of the actual praise and the meaning of the introduction. First, there are three: necessity, summarized meaning, and word meaning. First, the qualities of the lama are shown to be inseparable from the Buddha, which is to be expressed. The great accumulation of merit from the praise is the necessity. Perfecting the two accumulations through the power of merit and attaining Buddhahood is the ultimate necessity. The latter depending on the former is the connection. Second, "Father of all Buddhas," is one verse. The first line praises from the aspect of the cause, the second line praises from the aspect of the result, and the third and fourth lines praise from the aspect of the activity. Third, you areརྒྱལ༷་བ༷་ཀུན༷(Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: all, all, all)the father of all who generateཡ༷བ་ཏུ་གྱུར༷(Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: become father), the essence inseparable from glorious Vajrasattva, earlier than all Buddhas, yet all theརྒྱལ༷་བ༷་(Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: all, all)of the ten directions take the form of aསྲས༷་(Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: son), demonstrating the conduct of a bodhisattva benefiting sentient beings, as it is said: "With knowledge, one does not abide in saṃsāra; with compassion, one does not abide in nirvāṇa." As it is said, having directly seen the meaning of emptiness, one abandons the extreme of saṃsāra, and with great compassion, one continuously engages in benefiting sentient beings,ཞི༷་བ་(Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: peace)ceasing, one abandons the extreme of nirvāṇa, but you are the lord, chief, or lama of all sentient beings in saṃsāra and all who have attained the state ofཞི༷་བའི་(Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: peaceful)such as śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas. Third, from the aspect of activity,དཔ༷ལ་ལྡན༷་འཁོ༷ར་ལོ༷་སྡོམ༷་པ༷་(Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: glorious, wheel, saṃvara, saṃvara)Hevajra himself, taking the form of a lama possessing the qualities of a supreme vajra ācārya, and the lama who engages in benefiting beings and

A name bestowed by the supreme deity: Before the feet of Tāranātha Drolwai Gönpo, I pray. ( इति ) What kind of teacher lacks qualities? One who lacks compassion and is fierce with anger, Arrogant and unrestrained in attachment. A selfish teacher should not be a wise one to the disciple. One should abandon the faults mentioned above, be stable, gentle, and wise, patient, Upright and without deceit, knowing the union of mantra and tantra, possessing love and being skilled in treatises, Fully knowing those ten qualities, skilled in the work of drawing mandalas, The teacher who expounds secret mantras is the one who has subdued the power of his own nature. He possesses the above qualities. Especially, with one word, he places beings in the state of Buddhahood. Wisdom and primordial awareness are the mind and its manifestations, and they also transform into the ten aspects. Power is the immaculate rabbit, residing here like a reflection in a mirror. The joy born from that, the coemergent bliss, the unchanging nature, the immutable is the fourth bliss. By whom is the face of the Buddha made to reside in the heart and face, That is the glorious guru. Thus, with the emptiness that possesses all kinds of excellence, and the great bliss of the unchanging bindu, one also personally experiences, And can also place the disciple on such a path. One must possess such qualities. If one possesses this quality, even if one does not possess all the above qualities, one can be a teacher who can place beings in the state of Buddhahood in one lifetime. If one does not possess those two, as mentioned before, even if one possesses everything, one cannot bestow supreme accomplishment in this life. It is crucial to possess those two qualities. The first verse shows that he is the son of all victors, that is, the accumulation of merit from entering the vast bodhisattva conduct, and the vast accumulation of wisdom from directly realizing the nature of reality. It is praised from the door of the accumulation of causes. Furthermore, here the first verse shows that he is the father of all victors, the second verse explains the differences in his qualities, and the last two verses are, non-abiding nirvana is only possessed by the Buddha, so it is the Buddha of whom.
