Collected Teachings of Tāranātha JT356: Explanation of the Short Verse Praise 17-734 ༄༅། ། Explanation of the Short Verse Praise ༄༅། ། Explanation of the Short Verse Praise ༄༅། །Oṃ svāsti. This is the single verse praise that came from the noble Cloud of Jewels: Great fame, one with great renown; great sage, great hero; one who transcends the suffering of existence; I prostrate and pay homage to the one who transcends afflictions. Thus it is. Among these, great fame is: Because the Bhagavan, for three great countless eons and so forth, solely with the intention of benefiting and bringing happiness to sentient beings, gave away immeasurable difficult-to-give things such as his body, and also practiced immeasurable practices of the six perfections, therefore his fame is in accordance with reality and widely spread. This shows the generation of bodhicitta and the accumulation of merit, and it should be understood that all the causes of great enlightenment have been gathered by this. One with great renown refers to the mind that possesses a body adorned with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor signs, speech with sixty qualities, ten powers, four fearlessnesses, and eighteen unshared qualities, etc., a sea of qualities, and because he possesses such qualities, he is incomparable in the three realms of existence. Thus, he is praised by all the worlds, including the gods. It should be understood that this shows all the qualities of the teacher himself. In some current sutra versions, it appears as "great fame, one with great wisdom," but this (what is said here) is more reasonable. As for the term great sage, the asceticism of the Tirthikas is merely exertion that causes suffering to the body, and they never abandon all sins, do not have extremely pure samadhi, and their wisdom is mixed with wrong views, therefore they only hold the name of sage. The Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas are sages because they possess the asceticism of pure discipline, samadhi, and wisdom, that is, the three trainings. Great means greater than all, if becoming great by being greater than some, then everything would become great. Therefore, there is nothing greater than him.

What to say of samsara? Even equality is impossible. Moreover, the greatness that cannot be surpassed in many ways is the sole teacher, the Buddha. He is the one who is accustomed to the three trainings himself, and in order to place countless beings in the asceticism of the three trainings, he is the great Muni. A hero means conquering enemies; enemies are the demon of afflictions, the demon of aggregates, the demon of death, and the evil one, the son of the gods. Even the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, without exception, think that they have conquered these, but since others cannot conquer them, they are not truly heroes. But the Bhagavan himself has destroyed the habitual tendencies along with their abodes, and at all times and in all directions he conquers immeasurable demons, so he is the great hero. Samsara is the three realms of desire, form, and formlessness, encompassing all the five aggregates of nature. Sorrow is suffering, encompassing all three or eight kinds of suffering. Whatever suffering arises from the decay of the wheel of delusion caused by causes and conditions is called sorrow. For example, when sons and wives die, and houses and the like are destroyed, suffering arises, so it is accompanied by sorrow. This is understood as it is. Therefore, one should strongly cultivate the perception of suffering in impermanence. Having crossed over such a river of sorrow, the lesser vehicle practitioners think that the teacher has abandoned these sufferings, but until the transcendence of sorrow is taught, it is considered to be with residue. That is not the case, because it is contradictory to be accompanied by it while those subtle habitual tendencies are being purified. Therefore, the great Muni should not be regarded as an emanation body, as having an aggregate of suffering. Afflictions are the root afflictions and all the secondary afflictions. These also include all that is to be abandoned by seeing and meditating, encompassed by desire, anger, pride, ignorance, view of the perishable aggregate, wrong view, extreme view, holding views as supreme, and holding morality and asceticism as supreme. Transcending means abandoning its habitual tendencies.
