Dorje Drolo Teachings JT187: Instructions on the Three Essential Points. Instructions on the Three Essential Points. In this life, practice the continuous yoga. Instructions on the Three Essential Points. Here are the instructions of the noble Avalokiteśvara, the advice of Jetsun Mitrayogin, a concise summary of the practice of the three essential points: In this life, practice the continuous yidam. At the time of death, practice the transference of consciousness. In the bardo, practice blending. Practice, practice continuously, is the key to all practices. Thus it is said. In this life, practice the continuous yoga, which has two parts: preliminary and main practice. The first is: after remembering impermanence and suffering, generate great compassion. Thus it is said. That is, analyze the present body, mind, and appearances, and realize that all of this is impermanent and subject to destruction. In particular, there is no certainty when death will come. At the time of death, nothing other than the Dharma will be of any help. After death, one will not wander aimlessly. None of the present enemies, friends, enjoyments, or appearances will follow. Due to the influence of good and bad karma, one will take birth in the six realms. Wherever one is born, there is no happiness, only suffering. All of samsara in the three realms is suffering. If one examines this carefully, one will see that the beings of the six realms, as vast as space, especially one's kind parents, are experiencing endless suffering. How pitiful! Thinking, "I must liberate them from suffering." These three aspirations should be practiced continuously. For these three aspirations, one can practice each one separately, or combine all three into one session. The second part is: Lama on the crown of the head, deity in the heart, mind itself practice unborn. As 10-477 it is said, of the three essential points, the first is to practice the lama on the crown of the head: On one's own crown, the essence of the Dharmakaya is a crystal stupa with a thousand doors (or: a thousand openings). The essence of the Sambhogakaya is that it is adorned with all kinds of jewels on this stupa. The essence of the Nirmanakaya is that there is a Buddha in each door. The essence of the indivisibility of the three kayas is the true form of the root guru or the form of Vajradhara inside the vase of the stupa. Pray with fervent devotion, practice the unborn Dharmakaya.

I pray to the essence, the precious Guru! I pray to the essence of the unobstructed Sambhogakaya, the precious Guru! I pray to the essence of the unlocalized Nirmanakaya, the precious Guru! I pray to the essence of the Trikaya Great Bliss, the precious Guru! Please bless me! Thus prayed. It dissolves into oneself as a stream of light or nectar, and one rests in the state where all the root and lineage Gurus and one's own mind become inseparable. The second key point is the instruction on meditating on the Yidam in the heart: In the center of a red lotus with a thousand petals in one's own heart, visualize the noble Avalokiteshvara Khasarpaṇi or the noble four-armed one, whichever one prefers. At the heart, on the moon, is (ཧྲཱིཿ, hrih, seed syllable), and on each of the thousand petals is a white (ཨ, a, seed syllable). With devotion, respect, and love for the Yidam in the heart, recite (ༀ་ཨཱཿཧྲཱིཿཧཱུཾ, om ah hrih hum) and (ༀ་མ་ཎི་པདྨེ་ཧཱུཾ, om mani padme hum) as much as possible. Finally, they all dissolve into light, shimmering. It dissolves into one's own body, speech, and mind. Then, one rests in the state of becoming like a rainbow disappearing into the sky. The third key point is the instruction on meditating on one's own mind as unborn: With the body in posture, let the breath be natural. Abandoning the thoughts of the three times, one gazes directly at one's own face in a natural state, free from all grasping. This is making the inherent ground the path. Whatever arises, such as the appearance of forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations, and thoughts of happiness, sadness, high and low, etc., simply recognize its own nature and rest without fabrication. This is the manifestation of the primordial state without difference, which is the instruction on making the inherent unchanging the path. It is also permissible to introduce it through the four doors of view, meditation, conduct, and result, which will be explained below. The main practice is four or five sessions. Instructions on Phowa Meditation at the Time of Death Secondly, the instruction on Phowa meditation at the time of death: After offering one's own body as a sacrifice, one should say: "Completely abandon all attachments, and with the union of the light tube, cast the mind to the Tushita heaven." It is said that three human head supports appear in front of oneself. One's own skull is cut around the hairline and placed on top of it, becoming a very large container. One's own mind transforms into an image of Avalokiteshvara the size of a thumb, from the center of the body...
