Collection of Teachings by Tāranātha JT61: A Letter to the Hermit Namkhai Senge 1-705 ༄༅། །A Letter to the Hermit Namkhai Senge ༄༅། །Words of Tāranātha of the Borderland. A Letter to the Hermit Namkhai Senge. 1-706 I am delighted to hear that your practice is increasing. My Dharma is also increasing. In this context, let me say a few words related to the nature of reality. The Buddha who is the meaning of reality need not be sought outside. It has been present in oneself from the very beginning. Not only in oneself, but in all sentient beings. Not only in sentient beings, but all of existence, samsara and nirvana, abide in this nature. If one knows how to see one's own face by relying on the blessings of the lama and the key points of the instructions, then the Dharmakaya that has always been there will cut off the possibility of existence. Otherwise, even if it exists, it will not help. The way to realize this is: first, by purifying the mind that grasps inwardly, one must allow the grasper itself to be self-liberated. If that happens, then what is grasped later will be purified in its own place. Furthermore, if there is no fabrication of memory and grasping in just recognizing one's own nature, then what need is there to talk about other views? The mere awareness, the fleeting, flickering, will never cease. It is impossible to express in words what it is like, in accordance with one's own experience. It is impossible to ascertain what it is like with the mind of wandering thoughts. It is neither this nor that. It is not included in any place or part of a place. Even if one thinks it exists in the essence of awareness and knowledge, the essence of self-awareness in an instant is such that there has never been an experiencer or an experience, an object of awareness or an act of awareness, of experiencing knowledge in this way or abiding in awareness in this way. This is the very nature of ordinary consciousness, and it is the reality of all phenomena. In the language of the scriptures, it is called inexpressible, beyond the realm of sound and thought, and inexpressible, free from elaboration, and the wisdom that is individually self-aware, emptiness, and ultimate truth, etc. Many beautiful Dharma terms and countless sweet names have arisen from this. The door of manifestation of that which has no identifiable nature, 1-707 whether virtuous thoughts such as faith and compassion arise, or whether the five poisons of afflictions such as attachment and hatred arise, or whether thoughts of earth, stones, mountains, and rocks arise.

Even if it is an unpredicted manifestation door, whatever arises, it must be recognized as soon as it arises. Recognition does not mean that after the first moment of conceptual thought arises, in the second moment, you chase after the thought, 'A conceptual thought has arisen.' Even if it's simultaneous, it's not okay to fabricate with the thought, 'It seems to be a conceptual thought.' If the mind of chasing and fabricating doesn't even know itself, it's like telling others to be quiet while making a loud noise. If the one who should recognize doesn't recognize himself, but presumes that another knowledge can recognize him, it is a deception of fabrication. So, what does it mean to truly recognize oneself? It means that at the moment the manifestation door arises, in that single instant, without any modification, naturally recognizing itself. This is true recognition. When the movement itself knows the movement itself, there are no bird tracks. The movement itself is purified, and afflictions are naturally liberated. In this case, too, due to the differences in the strength of afflictions, conceptual thoughts, external conditions, etc., some manifestation doors seem clear but are without attachment, like reflections in water; others are like light pervading space. Apart from that, the manifestation itself cannot be identified. Although the ways of manifestation are different, there is no difference in essence. The ways of manifestation that conform to the mind are countless and endless, beyond expression. In that state, all manifestations are merely the uninterrupted manifestation of primordial power, and nothing else. Therefore, a conceptual thought with inherent existence cannot be found. When this happens, the second point, the purification of the externally grasped object, and the so-called phenomena liberating in themselves, will follow. Earth, stones, mountains, rocks, plants, forests, enemies, friends, retinue, enjoyment, companions, etc., however they appear internally or externally, at the moment of appearance, without being defiled by the grasping of objects, the moment of appearance, the moment of arising, is self-knowing and self-illuminating. At the time of arising, at the time of clarity, at the time of appearance, there is no grasping of 'this is it, this is not it.' That is what is called phenomena liberating in themselves. Just like dream objects or reflections in a mirror, recognizing this, the clinging to reality naturally dissolves.
