English version The Dhāraṇī of Spontaneously Fulfilling Wishes for Eliminating All Lightning Obstacles No. 1402 The Dhāraṇī of Spontaneously Fulfilling Wishes for Eliminating All Lightning Obstacles Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Śīlahhrakṣa, a purple-robed Śrāmaṇa, from the Diśā Palace Temple in the country of Uddiyana in Northern India, under imperial decree. Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove in the country of Śrāvastī. At that time, the World-Honored One said to the Venerable Ānanda: ‘Listen attentively, for there is a Dhāraṇī of Spontaneously Fulfilling Wishes for Eliminating All Lightning Obstacles, which was proclaimed by the Tathāgatas of the past, the Unsurpassed Perfectly Enlightened Ones. As I am now constantly compassionate, for the sake of benefiting all sentient beings in heaven and on earth and enabling them to attain happiness, I will also proclaim it.’ Ānanda said: ‘So be it, World-Honored One, I would be delighted to hear it.’ The World-Honored One said: ‘Ānanda, in the east there is lightning named Āgaṇa (meaning 'without thickness'), in the south there is lightning named Śataru (meaning 'following the stream'), in the west there is lightning named 'emitting light', and in the north there is lightning named Śyāma-tāmanī (meaning 'hundred-birth tree'). Ānanda, if there are men and women of good families who know the names of these mantras, there will be no fear of thunder and lightning in the direction where they live. English version: At that time, the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahāsattva (महान् बोधिसत्त्व, the great compassionate Bodhisattva) and his retinue all came before the Buddha and sat on one side. Then, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (अवलोकितेश्वर, another name for Guanshiyin Bodhisattva) rose from his seat and said to the World-Honored One, 'World-Honored One, I will also speak this true Dharma.' At that time, Sāgararāja (娑誐噜龙王, Ocean Dragon King), Manasvin rāja (么曩悉吠龙王, Mindful Dragon King), Vidyutprabha rāja (电光龙王, Lightning Light Dragon King), Anavatapta rāja (无热恼池龙王, Dragon King of Lake Anavatapta), Vidyujjihva rāja (电舌龙王, Lightning Tongue Dragon King), Śatarashmi rāja (百光龙王, Hundred Ray Dragon King), and others, also stood respectfully before the World Honored One with palms pressed together. The World Honored One told them, 'Wherever this wish-fulfilling verse exists, it can protect against all lightning obstacles, rescue from all premature deaths, and eliminate all poisons. It can also destroy all Kaṭhakanās (羯祛那) and Vetālas (吠哆拏), as well as those who perform inauspicious deeds. Listen carefully and generate a compassionate heart. Among your dragon clans, each of you generates anger, arrogance, and pride, which should be subdued.' The dragons replied, 'How should we subdue them?' The World Honored One answered, 'I have a Dhāraṇī that can stop the arrogance and pride in the hearts of you dragons.'
