At one time, the Buddha was in the Jetavana Anathapindika-arama (释迦牟尼佛接受信徒布施的园林) in Sravasti (舍卫国). At that time, he was with a large assembly of Bhikkhus (比丘僧, monks), speaking the 'Mani Ratna Sutra'. The Buddha asked Ananda (阿难, one of the Buddha's ten principal disciples): 'Why are the people of the world not at peace? Why do the people of the world have so many illnesses and pains? Because of the pain of emerging from the mother's womb, because of heartbreak, headaches, dizziness, and inability to eat, all of these are caused by Mara (魔). Now, all the Bhikkhus are greatly fearful of this.' Then (Ananda) stepped forward and said to the Buddha: 'Where do these pains come from, and where do they go? The people are greatly worried and unhappy.'
