English version: Ananda, this Dharani (a type of mantra) verse is rare even when a Buddha appears in the world. Ananda, if a man or woman of good family hears, upholds, recites, chants, and explains this Dharani verse to others, they will gain knowledge of their past lives and see the events of their past thirteen existences. All afflictions will be eliminated, and they will not have to suffer any past karma. Furthermore, Ananda, this Dharani verse is jointly proclaimed by eighty-two kotis (koti: an ancient Indian unit of counting, equivalent to ten million) of Bodhisattvas. If anyone slanders this Dharani, it is the same as slandering eighty-two kotis of Bodhisattvas, without any difference. At that time, the World Honored One told the Bhikshus (Buddhist monks), 'I will also speak this Dharani verse for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, so that the merits of all sentient beings may increase, their bodies and minds may be joyful, their names may be widely known, and they may have great power and a dignified appearance. Because of this secret protection.' Then he spoke the Dharani, which is as follows: Tad-ya-ta te-ne a-ju va-ju na-ju ku-na-ju cha-ke cha-ra-ke ta-ru-ve tu-ru-ve ra-ta-ve dhu-le ru-le ha-le mi-le ti-le shi-le shi-ri ham-le a-pu va-pu na-pu ku-na-chi a-na-pa-ti va-na-pa-ti ke-si ke-si ke-si cha-si cha-si cha-si ma-ha cha-si sva-ha. Ananda, this Dharani verse is very rare. Ananda, this Amuni Dharani verse is very rare even when a Buddha appears in the world. English version: One can understand the events of past lives within those fourteen existences. All afflictions are eliminated, and no karmic debts are received. Furthermore, Ananda (one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha), these Dharani (a type of mantra or incantation) verses were jointly proclaimed by eighty-four koti (an Indian numerical unit equal to ten million) Buddhas. If anyone slanders this Dharani, it is equivalent to slandering eighty-four koti Buddhas, without any difference. Ananda, if there are virtuous men or virtuous women who, under a withered tree, recite or chant these Dharani verses, they will be secretly protected and rescued, so that fire cannot burn it, and the withered tree will regrow branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits in abundance, let alone those who uphold this Dharani. At that time, the World-Honored One (Shakyamuni Buddha) further told the bhiksus (Buddhist monks): 'I will now reiterate the Dharani verses for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, so that their faces are joyful, their names are widely known, their merits increase, and their appearances are dignified and beautiful, because of this secret protection.' Then he spoke the Dharani: 'Tad-ya-tha-te (two combined) ne a-ju va-ju cha-ke cha-ra-ke (3) ta-ru-pa-ti (4) tu-ru-pa-ti (5) tu-ru-mi-ti (6) tu-ru-mi-mi-ti (7) tu-ru-tu-le (8) su-le hi-le (9) mu-le ti-le (10) sva-ha (two combined, long vowel) (11)' At that time, the World-Honored One told the Venerable Ananda: 'Now listen carefully. These Dharani verses are extremely rare. You should uphold, recite, and explain them to others. Ananda, this Amuni Dharani Buddha appearing in the world is also very rare. Ananda, if there are virtuous men or virtuous women who hear these Dharani verses, uphold, recite, and explain them to others, they will obtain the power of knowing past lives and understand the events of past twenty-one existences. All afflictions will be eliminated, and no karmic debts will be received. Moreover, they will be protected from all bhutas (ghosts and spirits), all Nagas (serpentine deities), yakshas (nature spirits), gandharvas (celestial musicians), asuras (demigods), garudas (mythical birds), kinnaras (mythical beings, part human, part horse), mahoragas (great serpent deities), humans, and non-humans, who will be unable to harm them. Even all kinds of malignant sores, snakes, insects, scorpions, centipedes, and other insects will be unable to cause harm. Furthermore, there will be no malaria, wind disorders, jaundice, phlegm disorders, and other such illnesses. English version: The disease will erupt in a very short time, lasting one day, two days, three days, four days, even seven days, half a month, a month, a year. It will not be harmed for a long time. Moreover, there will be no more troubles from those sores, carbuncles, paralysis, scabies, sores, and all kinds of diseases, all karmic obstacles, all curses, and all Vaitada (a type of evil spirit) cannot harm. Furthermore, Ananda (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples), these Dharani (a type of mantra) verses are jointly proclaimed by ninety-nine Koti (an Indian numerical unit, one Koti equals ten million) Buddhas. If anyone slanders this Dharani, it is the same as slandering ninety-nine Koti Buddhas, there is no difference. Furthermore, Ananda, these Dharani verses, when entering the royal palace, remember them; when entering the Rakshasa (evil spirit) realm, remember them; when entering among lions, tigers, and wolves, remember them; when entering the wilderness, remember them; when entering violent rivers, remember them; when encountering water and fire disasters, remember them; when poisoned by drugs, remember them; when in all fear and dread, remember them; they cannot cause harm. Furthermore, Ananda, if there is someone who upholds this Dharani, if they encounter evil people holding knives and sticks, angrily approaching and wanting to harm them, the knives and sticks in their hands will naturally shatter, and they will be liberated. Ananda, I observe with my wisdom in the human and heavenly realms, as well as among Mara (the demon king), Brahma (the lord of the realm of form), Sramana (ascetic practitioners), Devas (gods), Asuras (a type of deity), and other beings, if this Dharani mantra verse is used to protect, rescue, establish boundaries, and guard, to extinguish disasters, there is nothing that can surpass this Dharani. Why? Ananda, this Amuni Dharani, through its blessing and protection, will eliminate all afflictions. At that time, the Four Heavenly Kings said to the World Honored One: 'When the Dharma declines, we will use the majestic power of the Dharma to widely propagate and spread it, so that the Dharma will abide for a long time. Those Dharma masters who uphold the Dharma, we will also protect them and dispel all Maras.' The World Honored One praised, 'Good, Four Heavenly Kings, generate courageous compassion to protect the Dharma.'
