English version: No. 1322 New Collection of Bathing Image Ritual - One Volume Compiled by Huilin In the western five regions of India (the five ancient regions of India), the Sangha (monastic community) dwells in monasteries that are often adorned with solemn splendor. They reside in Garan (monastery), temples, Aranya (quiet places far from villages), or Sangharama (monastic gardens). Every day, they bathe the Buddha images, burn incense, gather various precious flowers, scatter the flowers as offerings, prostrate and praise the Buddha. They circumambulate the Buddha with reverence and respect, day after day, with such diligence, taking their entire lives as the term, without interruption. Every morning, if they do not perform this offering, they vow not to eat. This is common in all countries far and near, and there is no place that does not do this. This is probably a ritual that the Sangha often reverently practice. Only Buddha images made of earth, wood, or painted images cannot be bathed. If the images are made of gold, silver, precious stones, copper, latten (tin-lead alloy), brass-like metal, or stone, they can all be bathed regularly. All the fragrant water to be used for bathing the Buddha images the next morning should be prepared by separately crushing various fragrances tonight, wrapping them in silk cloth, and soaking them in water overnight. All fragrances are suitable for bathing the Buddha images. Each fragrance should be in a separate bottle, and do not mix multiple fragrances together. It is best to use bottles that have not been touched. For example, those made of gold, silver, and other precious materials, or iron, copper, lead, tin, clean porcelain bottles, and without damage. All bottles must be wiped clean to make them bright. Write the name of the fragrant water on the bottles and use them in sequence. If you are poor and do not have these bottles, you can use new and clean stone, tile, or wooden bottles that have never been used to replace them. However, they cannot be mixed, otherwise they will become defiled. These bottles can be used to hold the fragrant water after bathing the Buddha images. Those who practice this method must maintain purity of body and mind, proper conduct, and dignified demeanor, and must be meticulous and attentive. All offering utensils should be treated in the same way. When it comes time for bathing, the halls should be swept and cleaned. In a spacious and clean place, spread a large altar with clean cow dung, about ten feet in diameter. Place a platform in the center of the altar, and place a large object on the platform. Place a stand in the middle, and place the Buddha image on the stand. Place a bed next to it and cover it with oilcloth. Arrange the various bottles of fragrant water in order. The five kinds of Dharma offerings, hundred-knot long thread, new and clean soft silk, bricks, and other items are arranged on top. After the assembly has gathered, they jointly invite the Dharma master Acharya (a teacher proficient in Dharma), or elect the most respected senior monk (the highest-ranking monk in the monastery) to recite the opening verses of the Bathing Image Sutra for everyone. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

English version: A Great Vehicle Gatha (verse) for Making Vows with White Hair. Everyone universally recites each line. The Gatha says: 'I now bathe all the Tathagatas (如来, Thus Come Ones), a gathering adorned with pure wisdom and merit. May the sentient beings in the five turbidities quickly attain the pure Dharma body of the Tathagata. The fragrance of precepts, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and knowledge permeates the ten directions, always fragrant. May the incense smoke also be like this, performing Buddha deeds without measure or limit. May the suffering wheel of the three evil paths cease, universally causing the removal of heat and the attainment of coolness. May all generate the unsurpassed Bodhi mind and also cross the river of love to reach the other shore.' Furthermore, one person holds an incense burner, reverently kneeling. Reciting the Three Refuges in Sanskrit. With each line, everyone bows once. The praise says: 'Namo Buddhaya Gurave (引一)' 'Namo Dharmaya Tadayaning (二礼)' 'Namo Sanghaya Mahate (三礼)' 'Tili Biyu Bisado Danamo (四礼)' Furthermore, two people blow conches, and two people recite praises. Various elegant music, silk and bamboo instruments, and string songs are performed simultaneously. The Acharya (阿阇梨, teacher) personally holds a water bottle and bathes the Buddha images. Taking a long thread, one end is tied to the bottle and hangs down. Everyone in the assembly holds the thread with their palms together at their hearts. Concentrating and sincerely reciting the names of all Buddhas. If some are unable to hold the thread, they can take hold of the long clothing of the person in front. The intention is as if each person is personally bathing the Buddha images. Until the fragrant water in the bottle is completely emptied once, it must be replaced. After bathing the Buddha images, they are placed back. For those not yet bathed, more fragrant water of the same type is added and they are bathed as before. The blowing of conches, reciting of praises, and musical sounds continue until all the honored images have been bathed, then they are paused. Once they have been washed, they are wiped dry with clean silk and placed on the beds in their respective positions. Then, taking the scented ointment, everyone takes some with their ring finger and raises it to their heart. The Acharya (阿阇梨, teacher) recites the True Words for Offering Scented Ointment. Everyone recites each line in unison, until the last line. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
