Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the great city of Araṇakavatī. At that time, there were countless Devas (celestial beings), Nagas (dragons), Yaksas (a type of spirit), Gandharvas (celestial musicians), Asuras (demigods), Garudas (mythical birds), Kinnaras (mythical beings, half-human, half-horse), Mahoragas (great serpents), humans, and non-humans, as well as the planets: Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Saturn, the Moon (Taiyin), the Sun, Rahu (a shadow planet in Hindu astrology), and Ketu (a shadow planet in Hindu astrology). These twenty-seven Nakshatras (lunar mansions) respectfully surrounded the great Vajra Samadhi adorned Mandala. There were also countless thousands of Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, whose names were: Vajrapani (Bodhisattva holding the Vajra), Vajra Wrathful Bodhisattva, Vajra Army Bodhisattva, Vajra Pani Bodhisattva, Vajra Lord Bodhisattva, Vajra Adornment Bodhisattva, Vajra Light Bodhisattva, Vajra Spreader Bodhisattva, Avalokiteśvara (Bodhisattva who perceives the sounds of the world), Universal Observer Bodhisattva, Auspicious Bodhisattva, Lotus Banner Bodhisattva, Lotus Treasury Bodhisattva, Lotus Eye Bodhisattva, Maitreya (the future Buddha), Manjushri Dharma Prince Bodhisattva Mahasattva. These great Bodhisattvas respectfully surrounded the Buddha, and the Buddha taught them the Dharma, which was good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end. Its meaning was profound, its words were skillful, pure, unmixed, and fully adorned with purity and wish-fulfillment. At that time, Vajrapani Bodhisattva Mahasattva rose from his seat, and with his supernatural power, circumambulated the World-Honored One countless hundreds of thousands of times. He bowed his head to the ground in reverence, sat in the lotus position, and with pure eyes, gazed upon the assembly. He made the Vajra hand gesture, placing his palms together at his heart, and said to the World-Honored One: 'There are some Grahas (planets) whose forms are coarse and evil, whose minds are full of anger, and who harm sentient beings. They may cut off life, deplete wealth and treasures, diminish spirit, or shorten lifespan, thus harming all sentient beings. I beseech the World-Honored One to speak the true secret Dharma to protect us.' The Buddha said: 'Excellent, excellent! You are able to have compassion and benefit all sentient beings, asking the Tathagata about the most supreme secret Dharma. English version: I will speak for you, Vajrapani (Buddhist Dharma protector). To those evil constellations, as well as Devas (gods), Nagas (serpentine deities), Yakshas (a type of guardian spirit), Gandharvas (celestial musicians), Asuras (warlike deities), Garudas (large mythical birds), Kinnaras (mythical creatures, half-human, half-bird), Mahoragas (great serpent deities), and humans and non-humans, one should offer the supreme Argha (offering water) and music, etc., duly blessed, and make offerings to each of them, causing them to rejoice and thereby eliminating all calamities. At that time, Sakyamuni Buddha emitted great light from his heart, called the Light of Compassion, which entered the crowns of all the constellations. In an instant, all the constellations, as well as the sun and moon, immediately rose from their seats, prostrated with their heads and faces at his feet, knelt on their right knees, and respectfully said to the Buddha with folded palms: 'World Honored One, Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, may you compassionately accept us and speak the true Dharma for us. If we hear the true Dharma, we can protect sentient beings, so that they have no calamities, and all bonds, swords, and poisonous insects cannot harm them. We establish a boundary of the earth as protection.' English version: All these will be accomplished. First, one must follow the Dharma and use fragrant water to paint a Mandala (sacred diagram), twelve fingers wide. Or use gold, silver, copper, or earthenware vessels, etc., to offer Arghya (water offering) to the stars. Recite each of the previous mantras one hundred and eight times, and all desired matters will be accomplished. The Buddha told Vajrapani Bodhisattva: I will now speak of another Dharani, named the Holy Mother of the Stars, which has great luminous power to protect. All the stellar deities will rejoice upon hearing it. If there are Bhikshus (monks), Bhikshunis (nuns), Upasakas (laymen), or Upasikas (laywomen) who hear this scripture, offer Arghya (water offering) in the Mandala (sacred diagram), and recite this mantra seven times, they will obtain wealth, nobility, and longevity. If one recites it daily, then all the stellar deities can fulfill all the wishes of sentient beings.
