！譬如世间诸黑闇处，不能通达所行之道，虽有眼目不能观照。若有智者持以灯炬，彼所行道悉能通达。世尊亦复如是，善说正法破诸无智，而能一一分别诸法。是善，是不善；是应发起，是不应发起；是所应行，是不应行。如是等法，唯佛如来、应供、正等正觉出现世间能善宣说。我于今日快得善利，我今归佛、归法、归苾刍僧，持不杀等戒，为优婆塞。愿佛世尊摄受于我。”佛言：“善哉！今摄受汝。” 时，净意优婆塞，即白佛言：“世尊！今此舍卫城中诸族姓子，若闻是事，咸应念言：‘兜泥耶子于长夜中，善为众生利益开导。’”尔时，净意优婆塞作是语已，礼佛而退。 佛说净意优婆塞所问经 现代汉语译本：譬如世间所有黑暗的地方，不能通达所行走的道路，即使有眼睛也无法看见。如果有一位智者拿着灯火，他所要走的道路都能完全通达。世尊也是这样，善于宣说正法，破除各种愚昧无知，从而能够一一分辨各种法。什么是善，什么是不善；什么是应该做的，什么是不应该做的；什么是应该实行的，什么是不应该实行的。像这样的法，只有佛如来（Tathagata，如实而来的人）、应供（Arhat，值得供养的人）、正等正觉（Samyaksambuddha，完全觉悟的人）出现于世间才能善于宣说。我今天真是获得了极大的利益，我现在皈依佛、皈依法、皈依比丘僧（Bhikshu Sangha，出家僧团），奉持不杀生等戒律，成为优婆塞（Upasaka，在家男居士）。愿佛世尊接受我。’佛说：‘很好！现在接受你。’ 当时，净意（Jingyi）优婆塞，就对佛说：‘世尊！现在这舍卫城（Shravasti）中的各位善男子，如果听闻这件事，都应该想到：‘兜泥耶子（Douniyezi）在漫长的黑夜中，善于为众生利益开导。’’当时，净意优婆塞说完这些话后，向佛顶礼后退下。 佛说净意优婆塞所问经

English version: 'For example, in all the dark places in the world, one cannot understand the path to be taken, and even with eyes, one cannot see. If a wise person holds a lamp, he can fully understand the path he is to take. The World-Honored One (世尊, Shìzūn) is also like this, skillfully expounding the Dharma (正法, Zhèngfǎ), breaking through all ignorance, and thus being able to distinguish all dharmas (法, fǎ) one by one. What is good, and what is not good; what should be initiated, and what should not be initiated; what should be practiced, and what should not be practiced. Such dharmas can only be well expounded by the Buddha Tathagata (如来, Rúlái, Thus Come One), Arhat (应供, Yìnggòng, Worthy One), Samyaksambuddha (正等正觉, Zhèngděngzhèngjué, Perfectly Enlightened One) appearing in the world. Today, I have truly obtained great benefit. I now take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the Dharma, and take refuge in the Bhikshu Sangha (苾刍僧, Bìchūsēng, monastic community), upholding the precepts of non-killing, etc., and become a Upasaka (优婆塞, Yōupósāi, lay male devotee). May the World-Honored One accept me.’ The Buddha said, ‘Excellent! Now I accept you.’ At that time, the Upasaka Jingyi (净意, Jìngyì), then said to the Buddha, ‘World-Honored One! Now, all the sons of good families in this Shravasti (舍卫城, Shèwèichéng), if they hear of this matter, should all think: ‘Douniyezi (兜泥耶子, Dōuníyēzi) is good at guiding sentient beings for their benefit in the long night.’’ At that time, after the Upasaka Jingyi spoke these words, he bowed to the Buddha and withdrew.
