English

English version: It's like the fruit of the middle Āmalaka (a type of fruit), where slander arises even though there is no such thing. Seeing the Buddha receive many offerings, respect, and praise, and being admired by gods and humans, (the heretics) cannot receive such complete offerings as the Buddha, and jealousy arises in their hearts, so they create evil names for the Buddha. Seeing that the Buddha possesses such indestructible merits, and not possessing them themselves, they become jealous and slander the Tathagata. Those heretics, their past blessings exhausted and new blessings not arising, enter the wilderness and dense forest of evil views. It is like a person entering a great wilderness, losing the right path and unable to get out. Those heretics are also like this, separated from wisdom, unable to escape from various evil views, not believing in the true Dharma, not making offerings to the Sangha, losing their roots of goodness, generating various evil views, and all their words are inverted, not believing in karmic retribution, not knowing the laws of the Twelve Nidānas, walking in the dense forest of evil views instead of the true path, and being like the blind from birth in relation to all dharmas. At that time, the retinues of the six heretical teachers (Pūraṇa Kassapa, Makkhali Gosāla, Ajita Kesakambalī, Pakudha Kaccāyana, Sañjaya Belatthiputta, and Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta), and the naked ascetics, all gathered together, went to the debating hall and discussed together, saying: 'When the Śramaṇa Gautama (Śākyamuni Buddha) had not yet appeared, when the great Śramaṇa had not yet been seen, all the people of this Jambudvīpa (the world we live in) belonged to us, believed in our Dharma, and followed our wishes. After Gautama appeared in the world, all the people abandoned our Dharma, no longer provided us with clothes, food, bedding, and medicine, nor did they respect, honor, or praise us, nor did they listen to our words. What should we do now?' They further discussed, saying: 'The Śramaṇa Gautama, even though he possesses merit and wisdom, and can convert the countries of Aṅga (one of the sixteen Mahājanapadas of ancient India) and Magadha (one of the sixteen Mahājanapadas of ancient India), causing all the people to convert, cannot convert even one person, the elder Dhrtarastra. In this Rājagṛha (the capital of the ancient Magadha kingdom), only that elder does not believe in Gautama, but alone accepts our Dharma, offering, respecting, honoring, and praising us, giving us clothes and food, belonging only to us, Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta (founder of Jainism), Makkhali Gosāla (Ajivika leader), Pakudha Kaccāyana (skeptic), Sañjaya Belatthiputta (agnostic), Ajita Kesakambalī (materialist), Pūraṇa Kassapa (immoralist), and other teachers of the masses, and other Śramaṇas and Brahmins have never been able to reach his door.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

English version: 'If our disciples go to his house, and that person can sincerely offer various kinds of offerings, then that person's root of faith will be established today, and the excellent faith generated towards us will penetrate deep into his bones. Among the kings, ministers, Kshatriyas (warrior caste), Brahmanas (priestly caste), and all other people in Rajagrha (city name), none have such firm faith. Neither the Shramana Gautama (释迦牟尼佛) nor all the Brahmanas and other heretics can destroy that person's faith. We have complete control over him, and he will surely believe whatever we say. Now we should go to his house and tell him the above matters. Furthermore, we should teach him to dig a fire pit under each of the seven gates, each pit deep enough to bury seven people, filled with smokeless Khathira (type of wood) charcoal, with copper beams and covered with grass and soil. When Gautama is about to arrive, sprinkle water and scatter flowers. If Gautama steps on it, he will surely fall in and be burned to death. If he doesn't die, then put poison in his food and give it to him to eat. After doing these things, invite Gautama to come to the house for a meal. If Gautama is omniscient, he will surely not accept the invitation and will not be harmed by the fire and poison; if he is not omniscient, he will undoubtedly accept the invitation.' At that time, after these heretics made this plan, they set off together to Rajagrha, arriving at the house of the great elder Dehu (name). After arriving at his house, they stood in a row. At that time, the elder saw these heretics and was very happy, overjoyed beyond measure, and went to them to pay respects. After prostrating, he arranged beds everywhere and urged them to sit down. After they sat down, he put his palms together and bowed, saying, 'I have always been thinking about this, and today I suddenly encounter you. Excellent! Excellent! It must be the gods who pity me, allowing all the teachers and great virtues to come here to create a field of merit for me.' At that time, the elder saw that all the heretics were seated, and he poured water in order, arranged utensils, and prepared various foods. After eating, he washed his hands. At that time, the elder placed a small seat in front of the great heretic's bed and sat down. At that time, all the heretics, such as Rukjata Mityanita (name), seeing that the elder was seated, said, 'Great elder! We...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

English version: When we gathered at the Great Debate Hall, we first considered this: ‘Before the Shramana Gautama (Gautama, the surname of Shakyamuni) appeared, before we saw this Great Shramana, all sixteen great kingdoms of Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, referring to the world we live in), such as Anga and Magadha, belonged to us. They freely and willingly believed and accepted our words, respectfully made offerings, honored and praised us, and provided us with clothing, food, bedding, and medicine. Since he came out, people only believe in his Dharma, abandoning us, no longer respecting, honoring, or making offerings to us, nor providing us with clothing, food, bedding, and medicine. The sixteen great kingdoms, such as Anga and Magadha, are all under the control of Gautama. Only you are my benefactor, believing and accepting my words. The Shramana Gautama, with all his skillful means, cannot destroy your trust in me. Among the sixteen great kingdoms such as Anga and Magadha, no one believes my words like you do. All the people and the great kings also believe your words.’ Therefore, we have come up with this plan to discuss it with you. You trust me now, and I trust you. All our words are of one meaning. Do not let it leak out and be known by outsiders. ‘Great householder! You must now firmly trust our plan. You can dig a large fire pit at each of the seven gates of your house, burying seven people in each pit, burning smokeless flames with Khadira (khadira, a type of wood) charcoal. Use copper as beams, spread Kusa (kusa, a type of grass) thinly, and cover it with soil. When Gautama is about to arrive, sprinkle water on it and scatter good flowers. If Gautama passes by, he will surely fall in and be burned to death. If he is not burned to death, then put poison in the food. After doing these things, go and invite Gautama. If he is truly an all-knowing one, he will definitely not accept the invitation. If he is not all-knowing, there is no doubt that he will accept the invitation.’ At that time, the elder, hearing the teachings of the six teachers (referring to the six heretical teachers), was very happy and exclaimed, ‘Good! This plan is very good, very much in line with my wishes. I am now able to prepare everything. I only hope that the masters will not worry about it.’ The six teachers replied, ‘If that is the case, then you can prepare quickly now.’ The elder replied, ‘Good, according to your teachings, I will obey in everything. I will build the fire pits, prepare the poisoned food, and personally invite Gautama. If I cannot kill him, then no one else will be able to kill him.’ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
