Since we will become your teachers, please repeat these words. Venerable Sangha, please listen. My name is so-and-so. From this time forth, until the end of my life. Among the two-legged, the supreme, I take refuge in the Buddha. Among those free from attachment, the supreme, I take refuge in the Dharma. Among the assemblies, the supreme, I take refuge in the Sangha. Until the end of my life, may the teacher accept me as a layperson who holds the three refuges. Now I will teach the method. When speaking, you yourself say "Good." Speak! Yourself: The method is like this. The student: Good. Say it. Thus, you have well obtained the vows of a layperson holding the three refuges. From now on, you must protect these trainings. Among them, there are nine trainings to be protected: Having gone for refuge to the Buddha, one should abandon disrespect and strive for respect towards the image of the Buddha, even a small piece of a tsa-tsa. Having gone for refuge to the Dharma, one should respect the letters of the Dharma, even a single letter. Having gone for refuge to the Sangha, one should abandon disrespect and strive for respect towards even a yellow patch sewn in a square shape on a monastic robe. Having gone for refuge to the Buddha, one should not prostrate to the gods of outsiders. Having gone for refuge to the Dharma, one should not harm sentient beings. Having gone for refuge to the Sangha, one should not associate with non-Buddhist friends. Diligently taking refuge morning and evening, offering the best part of whatever one eats or drinks to the Three Jewels, and not seeking refuge in anything other than the Three Jewels, no matter what sickness or suffering arises, these should be well protected. If you do not protect these, you will lose the vows of taking refuge, resulting in the great fault of having no refuge in this life or the next, and wandering endlessly in the lower realms and samsara. If you protect them well, you will surpass ordinary people and outsiders, become the basis for all vows and commitments, be included in the fourfold retinue of the Buddha Bhagavan, be liberated from all sickness and suffering in this life except for the ripening of karma, all sins will be lessened, and you will not fall into the lower realms, etc., obtaining great benefits. As Orgyen Rinpoche said: It is suitable as a basis for the three vows, whatever is done becomes a gathering.

Where to go? To dispel temporary obstacles and protect from the suffering of samsara. Not to go to wrong paths such as heretics. Because it is the foundation of the noble path, whatever is done is integrated into the Dharma, which is the most precious. Thus it is said. Now, regarding naming and shaving the head, although it is not said in the Vinaya that it must be done at the time of ordination and novice vows, in Tibet, shaving the head and changing the name for celibate lay practitioners is considered a custom of all Tibetan scholars and accomplished ones. In particular, for those who hold the lineage of the great monasteries of the snowy land of Tibet, they are made to take refuge in the Three Jewels and become lay practitioners, then their hair is cut and a Dharma name is given, and they also wear the robes of an ordained person. For the kings and great ministers of the border regions, they are also made to take refuge in the Three Jewels and become lay practitioners, then a Dharma name is given and their hair is cut, which is the ritual performed by the great lamas of Tibet. Therefore, when shaving or reciting, the disciple should say "shaving." The attendant holds the knife and lets it touch the hair, then the master says, "Shaving?" When reciting, the disciple says, "Shaving." Give the hair to the master, and then place it in front of the deity. Oh, before you did not enter the Buddha's teachings, you did not enter the gate of the sacred Dharma. From today onwards, you have entered the gate of the sacred Dharma. Shaving the head and changing the name is a memorandum, so all thoughts must be in accordance with the sacred Dharma. Regarding names, in India, they are extracted from the names of the eighteen schools of Sravakas to name them. In Tibet, it seems that there is a tradition of extracting names from the names of the Khenpos of their respective masters. However, the prophecy sealed book of Orgyen Rinpoche says that it is best to extract names from the name of Padma (Padmasambhava). Therefore, this time also add "so-and-so" to your name. That is, at the beginning of Orgyen, Padma, Guru, Vajra, etc., add generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, wisdom, skillful means, great power, wisdom, compassion, loving-kindness, joy, universality, great joy, stainlessness, radiance, light, purity, intelligence, goodness, Dharma supreme, Dharmakaya, luminosity, path, consummation, equality.

Mother, Dondup, Yonten, Tsangyang, Norbu, Chokhor, Tamchok, Langpo, Gyajin, etc., and any other suitable names can be given. Oh, in this way, you have well received the lay vows of taking refuge in the Three Jewels, thank you very much. Say this and prostrate three times. Say this and it is released. Then carefully calculate the astrological signs for hair cutting. If that day is suitable, it is best; if not, then cut the hair later when the astrological signs are good. As for the yellow robes of ordination, according to the Vinaya, it is not absolutely necessary to have yellow robes when ordaining. However, in Tibet, there is a custom for lay practitioners to wear monastic robes, so if those who take refuge in the Three Jewels have monastic robes, it is acceptable to wear whatever they have. The incarnate lama said, in accordance with Dzogchen, if there are mistakes in writing A-rak, confess them, and may we follow in the footsteps of the Bhagavan Shakya Simha with virtue, spreading throughout the world. Sarva Mangalam. The entrance to the nine vehicles of the ancient Nyingma school of secret mantra, the first is the ritual of bestowing refuge, which is very concise. A-rak.
