The Seven Key Points of the Path. The Seven Key Points of the Path. I prostrate to the Lama, the perfectly complete Buddha, the Great Vajradhara! Here, among the inconceivable teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha, the Bhagavan, are included the two vehicles, great and small. The Great Vehicle is divided into two: the Paramita and the Secret Mantra. The Secret Mantra has four classes of tantras. Among them is the Unsurpassed Yoga Tantra. To take its meaning entirely and practice it, the profound essence is said to be the three: channels, winds, and bindus. Among these, concerning the key points of channels, winds, and bodhicitta, there are seven points: the key point of the practitioner, the key point of the special time, the key point of the place of perfect endowment, the key point of transforming bodhicitta, the key point of supplicating the Lama, the key point of the actual practice, and the key point of its result of liberation. The first of these is that whether one is attached or detached, one must have a body of perfect endowment, with the five senses unimpaired, be of youthful age and great courage, and one who desires to attain enlightenment in an instant should practice this. Secondly, the key point of time is when tummo (Tibetan: གཏུམ་མོ།) flares up and drips down, the time when desire arises, and especially the four times such as the new and full moon, and the time when strong attachment arises upon seeing a woman, these are the times to apply the key point. Thirdly, the place, whether a hermitage or a secluded monastery, free from the noise and distractions of people, is very important. Fourthly, the key point of mind generation is that before practicing, one should contemplate that all sentient beings, as infinite as space, may have happiness and be free from suffering, and attain perfect and complete enlightenment. For this purpose, one should apply the key points to channels, winds, and bodhicitta. Meditate for a moment with this in mind. Then all thoughts influenced by this will transform into bodhicitta. Even if one is attached, all afflictions are influenced by bodhicitta, resulting in inconceivable virtues, and all faults of degeneration are warded off. Fifthly, the supplication is that in the space in front or above the crown of the head, the root Lama resides in the form of father and mother. Invite and absorb the lineage Lamas, the Yidam deities, and all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. With the three secrets of body, speech, and mind,

Please grant that all afflictions may arise in the perfect Samadhi of inexpressible bliss and emptiness. Pray many times with such devotion. The key to whether or not great bliss arises depends on this. Sixth, there are three keys to practice: what is the nature of the channels, what is the nature of the winds, and what is the nature of bodhicitta. First, although there are many channels, they are all included in these three: blood flows from the right Rasana channel, urine flows from the left Lalana channel, and bodhicitta flows from the central Avadhuti channel. By straightening the body and the central channel, the channels will remain straight. Striking the key point of the Avadhuti (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) will become very profound. As the great Jetsun said, "The emptiness of the Avadhuti (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) is the supreme of emptiness." Second, although there are many winds, they are also included in three. The wind that flows from the right nostril is called "effort," and it causes suffering. The wind that flows from the left nostril is called "life," and it gives happiness. The wind that flows equally is the wind of wisdom, and striking its key point will generate immeasurable qualities. As Master Aryadeva said, "If one thoroughly understands the nature of the wind, one will also understand the nature of the mind." Third, bodhicitta is when great desire arises, men, women, and animals, etc., will involuntarily have the desire to engage in intercourse, and this is what is called bodhicitta. In tantra, this desire is called "bliss," while in the Paramita, it is called desire or affliction, and this is the difference between the near and far paths. There are three ways to practice this key point: the superior recognizes it as Mahamudra, the intermediate transforms it into accomplishment, and the inferior uses it to dispel obstacles. The first is that, as mentioned above, when desire arises, continuously practice Mahamudra, so that all the essence of the bindus is transformed into Samadhi, and immeasurable qualities will arise. The second is that the intermediate practitioner, like the Sumtri guide, does not let the thought of desire disappear, but practices it repeatedly. If the thought of desire disappears, it means the loss of accomplishment, so great effort must be made.
