"A Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition: The Fulfilling of Intellectual Desires" "A Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition: The Fulfilling of Intellectual Desires" This is the beginning of the treatise called "A Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition: The Fulfilling of Intellectual Desires." Namo Guruve (藏文:ན་མོ་གུ་རུ་ཝེ།,梵文天城体:नमो गुरुवे,梵文罗马拟音:namo guruve,汉语字面意思:敬礼 गुरु). Homage to all the Buddhas of the ten directions and their retinues! From the depths of the reservoir of the two accumulations, well-born, Possessing the tiers of the four means of gathering a pure activity, Shining brightly in the center of the four continents to be tamed, To the incomparable Teacher, I pay homage. To clarify the meaning of his teachings, the twelve branches, Without relying on others, but with self-power, With the roar of reason, crushing the brains of opponents, The two lords of reason, masters of reasoning, are victorious! In order for the teaching of the Able One to last long, And in order for my own good explanations to increase, And also for others who share the same fortune as me, With the mind of wanting to benefit, I make this fulfilling of intellectual desires. What is the connection of this treatise? Why was it composed? What is to be said? The one thing that is solely beneficial to beings is the teaching of the Able One. In order to cut off wrong speech about it, and in order to clarify that teaching, the teacher Dignāga composed the Compendium, which gathers together all the treatises that show the nature of valid cognition. However, since there have been many misunderstandings and wrong understandings of it, in order to dispel those, the teacher Dharmakīrti composed the seven treatises that follow that treatise. However, since the disciples of the teacher did not understand the firm words of that treatise as they were, they followed them. In order to explain the part of the words of the Compendium, he composed the Commentary on Valid Cognition. In order to dispel the wrong understandings of some scholars, both self and others, who do not understand Dignāga's reasoning, he established the meaning of the Compendium with reason, and established the tenets of that treatise, and composed the Ascertainment of Validity. In order for those who wish to easily understand the meaning of those extensive treatises with few words, he abandoned the extensive elaborations of refutation and establishment, and only showed the ordinary nature of validity, and composed the Drop of Reason. In the context of the chapter on self-benefit in those principal treatises, in order to specifically determine the nature of the difficult-to-understand reason,

"The Drop of Reasoning" and "Examination of Connection," which elaborates on the relationship between signs and properties (referring to Hetuvidya), and proceeding from the aspect of their benefit for others, "The Reasoning of Debate," which extensively demonstrates the methods of debaters refuting arguments, and in the chapter on direct perception (pratyakṣa), ultimately establishing the view of Mind-Only, thereby refuting the assertion that the object of realization belongs to the continuum of others, in order to eliminate such disputes, treatises such as "Establishing the Continuum of Others" were composed, which is known as the connection of the treatise. The disciples can easily understand the definitions of the two types of valid cognition (pramāṇa) in conventional truth, and can well examine the nature of their objects, such as impermanence, emptiness, selflessness, etc., and by practicing them correctly and truly, they can realize the valid cognition of ultimate truth, which is free from all defilements, which is known as the purpose of writing the treatise. The meaning of all the treatises that will be explained is what is to be expressed, and for this, the translators who translate the scriptures, in the Indian language, call it "Pramāṇavārttikakārikā" (藏文,प्रमाणवार्तिककारिका,pramāṇavārttikakārikā,Commentary on Valid Cognition), translated into Tibetan it is "Verses on the Commentary on Valid Cognition," which is the name of the treatise. And "Homage to the youthful Mañjuśrī" (藏文, , , ,), placing the homage and offering together at the beginning, because it is easy to understand, so there is no need to explain in detail. If you want to know, you can also understand it in other commentaries. Here, the treatise to be explained is: The teacher wants to write a treatise, first, in order to show that the teacher himself is in accordance with the behavior of the saints, so first praising the incomparable qualities of the teacher, the Buddha Shakyamuni, the Bhagavan, and then expressing the offering of homage, that is, taking "Homage" as a special basis. To whom do we pay homage? To the teacher Shakyamuni Buddha, the Bhagavan, named "Samantabhadra." So, what kind of qualities does he possess? And for what reason should we pay homage to him? Because he possesses such qualities: For the root cause of beings being bound in samsara—the network of conceptual thoughts that cling to the apparent reality of things, he completely eliminates it with the antidote of non-conceptual wisdom, and even the habitual tendencies are also eliminated, which is the quality of elimination; and directly realizes the profound meaning of non-duality that outsiders and Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas have not realized.
