Refutation of Other-Origination Refutation of Other-Origination Second, the refutation of other-origination is divided into two: the actual refutation and, incidentally, the refutation of the Mind-Only school's view. The first is further divided into two: stating the initial position and refuting it. The first is: Our own school says that things here do not arise from themselves, which is very reasonable. If so, it is unreasonable to say "nor do they arise from others." Because the four conditions of otherness that cause things to change, namely the causal condition, the immediately preceding condition, the objective condition, and the dominant condition, are the producers of things, which should be acknowledged based on the scriptures. Among the six causes, the other five, except for the efficient cause, are the causal condition. The object of the six consciousnesses is the objective condition. Except for the last mind and mental factors of an Arhat, the other minds and mental factors are the immediately preceding condition. The efficient cause is the dominant condition. Others say that, according to the definition of "that which accomplishes is the cause," whatever can produce something and exists in the nature of a seed is its causal condition. Just as an old man rises by leaning on a staff, minds and mental factors arise from causes, and whatever they rely on to arise is the objective condition. The moment the cause ceases is the immediately preceding condition for the arising of the result. Whatever arises when something exists is the dominant condition. Any co-arising conditions, as well as subsequent arising, etc., are included here. Isvara and others are not conditions, therefore the fifth condition does not exist. The four conditions mentioned by the Tathagata in the Abhidharma, etc., are conventional truths, not ultimate truths. Schools, etc., establish four substantially existent conditions, which were not taught by the Tathagata, because they contradict reason and scripture. Therefore, the four conditions posited by others should be refuted in both truths. On this, the teacher has already refuted the individual characteristics of the four conditions in the Root Verses on the Middle Way, so here only a general refutation is shown, and no individual refutations are made. Second, the refutation of that:

Refuting both conditioned and unconditioned phenomena, and abandoning the unreasonableness of refutation. The first is further divided into: mere refutation and refutation in name. The first is further divided into: asserting that cause and effect are extremely different entities, showing that they are not different entities, and refuting by examining the four extremes. Regarding the first: If another arises dependent on another, then thick darkness would also arise from a flame, and everything would arise from everything, because otherness is the same for all non-producers. If another effect arises dependent on another cause, then thick darkness would also arise from a flame, because they are also the same otherness. Therefore, it is said in the scriptures: If cause and effect are different entities, then it will never be reasonable. If cause and effect are different entities, then cause and non-cause become the same. It is also said that all effects and non-effects would arise from all causes and non-causes, because just as a rice seed and a rice sprout are different entities, so too are the non-producers of a rice sprout, such as fire, charcoal, and barley seeds, the same otherness as a rice sprout. It is also said that everything would arise from everything, because otherness is the same for non-producers. This also explains the Sutra of Arising and Ceasing. In order to eliminate the fault of being too extreme, others say: That which is capable of acting is therefore necessarily said to be the effect. That which is capable of producing an effect, even if it is another, is a cause. Because it arises from the cognition and production of the same lineage. It is said that a rice sprout does not arise from barley, etc. Although cause and effect are different entities, everything does not arise from everything, because certainty is seen. For example, what is capable of acting on what, therefore, it is necessarily called its effect. What is capable of producing an effect, even if it is another, is a cause, therefore, a special other is cause and effect, not just other. It arises from belonging to the same lineage, being of the same kind, and being a producer, not from different causes.
