Thus it is explained. That is established by dependence, and that itself is the Middle Way. Thus it is said. To say that something arises from any of the four extremes is not to speak of dependent origination, because one who speaks of dependent origination has no commitment to falling into extremes, because dependent origination is the antidote to all views of clinging to extremes. As it is said in the scriptures: Whatever arises in dependence on something, that is temporarily not that itself, nor is it other than that, therefore it is neither annihilation nor permanence. Thus it is said, and here it will be explained: Therefore, this reasoning of dependent origination destroys all nets of wrong views. Therefore, the schools of both ourselves and others, because they assert the arising of any of the four extremes, do not speak of dependent origination. Whoever speaks of dependent origination has abandoned all extremes and has entered the great path of the Sugatas, the Middle Way, because the Bhagavan has forbidden the arising of the four extremes and has spoken of dependent origination itself. Thus, the teacher (Nagarjuna) praised: Suffering is made by oneself, or made by another, or made by both, examined by the causeless thinkers, you said it arises dependently. If speaking of dependent origination and speaking of the four extremes are not contradictory, then how could the Able One (Shakyamuni), having spoken of dependent origination, be shown to be superior to the thinkers who speak of the four extremes? Therefore, the Madhyamika does not assert the arising of the four extremes in conventional terms, because he is one who speaks of dependent origination. Whoever speaks of dependent origination, because he does not fall into any extreme, has no attachment to anything, therefore he has not fallen away from the ultimate truth, and because all the terms of the world and beyond do not have any unreasonableness in this, he has not fallen away from the conventional truth either. Therefore, it is said in the scriptures: For whom emptiness is possible, for him everything is possible. For whom emptiness is not possible, for him everything is not possible. Thus it is said. Thus, for the Madhyamika who speaks of dependent origination, because there is no side whatsoever, it is impossible for anyone else to refute him.

Therefore, in the Refutation of Arguments, it says: "If I have some commitments, then I have those faults. Because I have no commitments, I am completely without fault." So, if there are no commitments, why make the four commitments that negate the four extremes? These are merely commitments made in the presence of those who say that things arise from the four extremes, and are not the tenets of the Madhyamikas themselves, because the things to be refuted, such as self-arising, are not established. There is no refutation of what is not to be refuted, just as a rabbit's horn cannot be cut off. Therefore, it is said: "Because there is nothing to be refuted, I refute nothing." Now, is the reasoning that refutes the arising from the four extremes one's own reasoning, or that of others? If it is one's own, how can the unarisen that is established by it not become one's own position? It is the reasoning accepted by others, not one's own, because if one does not accept even a little of the position to be established, what is the use of the reasoning that establishes it? How does one refute others with the reasoning of others? One refutes by showing contradictions in what is accepted, and when one sees contradictions in one's own assertions, it is in order to reverse attachment to one's own position. Even if one sees contradictions in one's own assertions, one will not become respectful to those who speak of the Middle Way, because one has not seen the establishment of the Middle Way. That is not so, because all extreme views are seen to be contradictory in their assertions, and when attachment to those views disappears, one will become respectful to the Middle Way of dependent arising, which is free from all views. Enough with the giving. Explanation of the selflessness of phenomena.
