Explanation of the Absence of Self in Phenomena. Explanation of the Absence of Self in Phenomena. Third, what is the Dharma being explained? It is the profound dependent arising, which is the very absence of all aggregates of elaboration, because it is the antidote to all views. This is also explained by the two absences of self and by the sixteen emptinesses. The first has two aspects: individual explanations and a common examination of cause and effect. The first also has the absence of self of phenomena and the absence of self of persons. The first has two aspects: scriptural authority and reasoning. Among them, to indicate the true nature of phenomena, the scriptural authority is as follows: From the Noble Ten Bhumis Sutra: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, that bodhisattva who has completely perfected the path on the fifth bodhisattva bhumi enters the sixth bodhisattva bhumi. He enters through ten samenesses of dharmas. What are the ten? They are: all dharmas are the same in being without characteristics; all dharmas are the same in being without essence; likewise, without arising, unarisen, solitary, primordially pure, without elaboration, without acceptance, without rejection; all dharmas are the same in being like illusions, like dreams, like mirages, like gandharva cities, like reflections of the moon in water, like images, like emanations; all dharmas are the same in being without the duality of existence and non-existence. When he thoroughly understands the nature of all dharmas in this way, he attains the sixth bodhisattva bhumi, which is manifested through sharp and compliant patience." This is what was said in the sutra. Secondly, in terms of reasoning, there are two aspects: stating the proposition of non-arising and showing the reasoning that establishes it. The first is: Among the ten samenesses mentioned above, it is thought that by showing the sameness of the non-arising of phenomena through reasoning, it will be easy to show the others as well. Therefore, the teacher said at the beginning of the Treatise on the Middle Way: "Not from oneself, not from another, not from both, not without cause. Whatever things, wherever, there is never any arising." Thus, it is closely stated. Here, too, after stating those four propositions, in order to establish them through reasoning, that is, it does not arise from itself, nor does it arise from others.

It is also said that there is no arising from either of the two, nor is there arising without a cause. If these four commitments have not already been established by the teacher, what is the need for making close arrangements to establish them again? The teacher said: The nature of things is not in conditions, etc. And so on, only pointing out the reason for refuting other-origination, but not pointing out others. Here, the reasons for other commitments are pointed out, and other aspects of the reason are also pointed out for other-origination, so this arrangement is made. If you ask why the teacher does not establish reasons for self-origination, etc., self-origination, etc. are the views of outsiders, and the teacher thinks that those views have already been refuted by his own sect. If so, then what is the use of saying it here again? Here, it is to point out a more excellent reason. If you ask why only these four commitments are mentioned to prevent arising, it is because for those who say that arising is true, there is no other possibility than these four extremes. Are these four extremes of arising that are refuted here refuted in the ultimate sense or in the conventional sense? They are refuted in both of the two truths, as it is said: At that time, with some reason, self- and other-origination are unreasonable, that reason is also unreasonable in the conventional sense, by what will your arising be? Because of this explanation. If so, then arising does not exist even in the conventional sense, because for arising, there is no possibility of going beyond the four extremes. It is not like that, although the arising analyzed by reason does not go beyond the four extremes, the conventional arising is not certain here, because worldly people do not have the analysis of one and different for cause and effect, they only say that sprouts arise from seeds, and smoke arises from fire, and make conventional expressions in this way. If so, then by refuting the arising of the four extremes, arising will not be refuted, because conventional arising cannot be refuted. It is not that conventional arising should be refuted, for the conventional arising that is free from the four extremes, it is called dependent origination, and dependent origination is the Middle Way. As it is said in the treatise: Whatever is dependent origination, that is emptiness.
