Explanation of Chapter Twelve. Explanation of Chapter Twelve. Second, refuting what should be observed, divided into three: the cause of not entering the good explanation; a brief presentation of the good explanation; and advising those who desire liberation to uphold the good explanation. The first is divided into four: showing the difficulty of the listener having the vessel; showing the profundity of the emptiness to be heard; showing that the profound is not for debate; and showing the subtle and coarse of the nature. The first is divided into two: the main text and the incidental. The first is: Here it is said, you have shown this dharma of selflessness very clearly and extensively, and the Tathagata is also one who understands this dharma and is good at guiding, why does this dharma not become widespread in the world? Why are the author, speaker, and the great nature of the dharma all extremely rare? Therefore, those who desire liberation should only enter this dharma. If the differences between one's own and other schools have all appeared, then why? Although the speaker, explainer, and the nature of the dharma are all extremely pure, it is difficult to obtain the great nature of the listener who can become the vessel of this dharma, that is, not following attachment and anger, not being biased towards any side, dwelling impartially, and having the wisdom to distinguish the essence and non-essence of good and bad explanations, as well as seeking good explanations, respecting the dharma and the speaker, and having three or five qualities such as trust, can be called the vessel of the good explanation listener. However, listeners who possess these qualities are extremely rare, so this dharma has not become widespread in the world. The faults of the listener can turn the virtues of the speaker into faults, and faults into virtues. If the listener possesses the characteristics described above, then the virtues of the speaker, such as exquisite words, meaning not reversed, no contradiction between previous and subsequent sentences, clear expression, understanding the listener's intention, not wanting inner disturbance, etc., will not turn into faults. The virtues of the listener will also not turn into the nature of faults. Therefore, although the speaker's dharma is pure, the listener does not value his own faults.

They consider the speaker himself to be flawed. In this way, the Blessed One has truly taught those who desire liberation the five aggregates of clinging, which are the result of existence; the karmic afflictions that are the means and cause of that existence; the eightfold noble path, which is the means of peace; and nirvana, which is the cessation of all afflictions—these four noble truths. Among them, those who are diligent in hearing, thinking, and meditating truly understand the meaning that the Blessed One has revealed. But those worldly people who are not diligent in hearing, thinking, and meditating, those who do not consider themselves vessels and have not comprehended, will say: 'What we do not truly understand must be what the Buddha has not correctly taught.' They will thus manifest the fault as being with the Buddha. But by that alone, it cannot be said that the Blessed One is flawed, because he has truly taught the four noble truths, and therefore he is the teacher who shows the benefit of all beings. The second part is: to prove that Shakyamuni is omniscient and to reveal that non-Buddhists are not omniscient. The first part is: If the Tathagata speaks of excellent words, of the meaning of the Dharma such as generosity and ethics, then the best words should be: focusing on teaching that all things do not exist, because we cannot understand, so he has not satisfied us. If someone says this, then the Samkhya and Vaisheshika schools, and all the wonderful people who desire liberation, desire and acknowledge that by abandoning attachment to all afflicted things such as happiness and suffering, one can attain nirvana. Because it is so, what reason is there for those who claim to attain nirvana by refuting and abandoning all afflicted things to be unhappy? The Blessed One has not spoken of anything that has never happened before, but the Blessed One has merely taught the method by which all of you desire to attain nirvana by abandoning everything, through focusing on teaching that all things are without self-nature. Therefore, do not be against the teachings of the Blessed One.
