If it is said that non-existence exists because it is not obstructed, and therefore, because there is contradiction, things also exist, then: If things are not established, then non-existence will not be established. The transformation of things into something else is what people call non-existence. If it is said that some things exist, then when it transforms into something else, non-existence also exists. As previously stated, when things are not established, the non-existence that depends on it will not be established. For example, when a pot, etc., disappears from its present state and becomes a tile, etc., acquiring another state, people say it is non-existence. Therefore, non-existence also does not exist. Third, showing that the ultimate view does not see reality itself: Those who view self-nature, other-things, existence, and non-existence, they do not see the Buddha's teachings. Thus, in all ways, self-nature, other-things, things, and non-existence do not exist. Because the darkness of ignorance has dimmed the eye of wisdom, those who are perverted think that the self-nature of form is changeable, feeling is experience, and consciousness is to separately recognize individual objects. The self-nature of things, and that form is other, and consciousness is also other. Those who view present things as existent and past things as non-existent do not see the profound dependent arising in the Buddha's teachings, the reality of the Middle Way that abandons permanence and annihilation. Because the very existence of self-nature and other things contradicts the reasoning mentioned above. The Tathagatas did not say that the self-nature of things contradicts reason, because they themselves have truly realized the reality of all things without error. Therefore, wise people only regard the words of the Buddha, the Bhagavan, as reliable, because they are reasonable and do not deceive. Second, refutation by scripture: In the Lankavatara Sutra it says: To perceive things as arising from conditions, whether perceiving them as existent or non-existent, is the view of non-Buddhists.

Those who have it, know that they will be far from the Dharma. And, those who slander my teachings, wearing monastic robes, proclaiming the existence and non-existence of results, will appear in the future. And so on, widely proclaimed. The Blessed One, with the knowledge of existence and non-existence, from the teachings of Katyayana, forbade both existence and non-existence. Because, from the perspective of self-nature and other-nature, real and unreal, the sutra says: Whoever establishes existence, why would the cause and condition not exist, the wrong view says existence, skillfully expounding existence and non-existence. Likewise, existence non-existence, existence non-nonexistence, when this world is seen, then the mind transforms, thereby realizing selflessness. Thus it is said. Because it contradicts reason, it is not the truth, therefore, for the sake of those who wish to be liberated, the Blessed One, from the teachings of the noble Katyayana, forbade both existence and non-existence. How is it forbidden? Katyayana, because this world mostly clings to existence and non-existence, therefore, they cannot be liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and affliction, they cannot be liberated from the cycle of the five paths, they cannot be liberated from the suffering caused by death. Thus it is said. This directly shows that clinging to existence and non-existence is the cause of samsara, thereby implying that as a method of liberation from samsara, both existence and non-existence are forbidden. This teaching is also quoted by all schools, therefore, this is taken as the basis. In what special way did the Blessed One distinguish it? Because he truly and without inversion knew the nature of real and unreal. Because the Blessed One, with the knowledge of existence and non-existence, forbade both existence and non-existence, therefore, it is not appropriate to claim that observing real and unreal is the truth. Third, it shows other ways of refutation. Here it is said: If fire and so on exist by nature, what fault would there be? Born from cause and condition, the nature will become fabricated. Thus it has been said.

Furthermore, if it exists by its own nature, then it will not change into non-existence. If fire and so on exist by their own nature, then that which exists by its own nature will never become non-existent. Because, for self-nature to change into other-nature is never reasonable. For example, the unobstructiveness of space never changes into something else, similarly, if fire and so on were established by their own nature, then destruction, which is the characteristic of changing into something else and ceasing, would never be reasonable. However, this is observed to perish and cease. Therefore, it should be known that these are not self-nature. If self-nature exists, it is unreasonable to say that self-nature does not exist because changing into other-nature is unreasonable and because changing into other-nature is observed. If self-nature does not exist, then whose is the changing into other-nature? Like a flower in the sky, if self-nature does not exist, then whose is the temporary changing into other-nature? Therefore, because changing into other-nature is not observed for that which does not have self-nature, but rather the changing into other-nature itself is seen, is it said that self-nature exists? Even if self-nature exists, how can it change into other-nature? Even if it exists without its self-nature disappearing, as it is now, how can it change into other-nature? Therefore, whether self-nature exists or does not exist, changing into other-nature is unreasonable, so changing into other-nature is impossible in any case. Therefore, it should be known that things do not have self-nature. Thus, when the self-nature of things does not exist at all, how can a wise person cling to things as existing or non-existing? If one clings in that way, then certainly: clinging to "exists" becomes permanence, and viewing "does not exist" becomes nihilism. Secondly, the instruction not to abide in extreme views is because clinging to the views of permanence and nihilism is also an obstacle that obstructs the path to heaven and liberation, and causes great meaninglessness. Therefore, the wise should not abide in existence and non-existence. Furthermore, why does clinging to things and the non-existence of things lead to clinging to the views of permanence and nihilism? Whatever exists by its own nature, it will not be non-existent, so it is permanent. Saying that it existed before but does not exist now, therefore it is nihilism.
