Furthermore, what else is there besides suffering? If the suffering of a god arises from another human being, then what is that other human being who inflicts that suffering and gives it to the other god, but a collection of human suffering? Therefore, suffering arising from another person does not exist. Therefore, since it is not established as done by myself, how could suffering be done by another? Whatever suffering is done by another, that would become done by himself. If another human being inflicts suffering for the purpose of giving it to a god, that suffering would become done by that human being himself, but that also does not exist. If a person himself inflicts suffering, then who did it? That person who inflicted suffering, what else is he but suffering? As previously stated, there is no agent of suffering, either self or other, other than suffering itself. Therefore, when the suffering of a god is not established as being done by a human being himself, how could that suffering of the god be done by another? Therefore, suffering is also not done by another. Secondly, showing another reasoning that refutes both sides: For the time being, suffering is not done by oneself, because oneself does not do oneself, because it is contradictory for oneself to do to oneself. Nor is it done by another, because when examining who does it, that other is not oneself, because oneself is not established, because it depends on other causes. Whatever is not established by itself, it will not do other, like the horns of a donkey. Therefore, how could suffering be done by another? That is unreasonable. Thirdly, refuting what is done by both: If each did it, then it would become that suffering is done by both. If oneself and another each did suffering, suffering would become done by both, but that is also not done by each, because it would become the fault already stated. Fourth, refuting causelessness is: Other ways

English

If suffering is not created by me, it is because it depends on conditions. It is not created by others, because if there is no seed, it will not arise. It is not created by both, because both are without movement. It is not born from no cause, because both the seed and the conditions have the power. It arises from its own seed, not from another. Because it depends on this, it is not created by me. Because there is no movement, it is not created by both. That is because of the power, it is not born from no cause. It is not created by me, nor is it created by others. How could suffering be born from no cause? As said before, when it is not created by me, and not created by others, how could suffering exist without a cause? It is like the fragrance of a flower in the sky. Therefore, there is no suffering, so I, who am the basis of suffering, do not exist either. Secondly, comparing this principle to other things: Only suffering has these four ways, it is neither existent nor non-existent (not only that), all things (also external things) do not have these four ways. Only the aggregate of suffering is not produced from the four ways of self, other, both, and no cause, and all external things do not have the four extremes of arising, and everything should be compared as before. If suffering and so on do not exist in four ways, then in what way is it established? If these have a little bit of self-nature, then they should be established in any of the four ways. But these have no self-nature at all, they are only established as existing by following the reversed of names. Therefore, seeking the establishment of these in the conventional is to acknowledge the principle of dependent arising that is established by merely relying on these conditions after excluding the four extremes as mentioned above. Thus, the teacher also said: Suffering is created by me, created by others, and created by both. This is the view of the causeless, you say it arises dependently. As it is said. The Blessed One also said: The Victorious One teaches the Dharma in the conventional, and one should look at conditioned and unconditioned phenomena in this way. In the ultimate truth, there is no self and other, this is the nature of all beings.

It is similar! Virtuous and non-virtuous actions do not perish. What I have done, I will experience. The result of karma does not transfer, and without a cause, one will not experience it. All existences are like illusions, without inherent existence, accumulating and dissipating like bubbles. Like illusions and mirages, they are always empty. Thus it is said. Thus it was spoken. This concludes the commentary on the twelfth chapter, "Examination of What is Done by Oneself and What is Done by Others," from the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way. Explanation of the Twelfth Chapter.
