Refuting the arising of suffering from four extremes. There are two ways to compare this method with others. The first is to state the proposition, and the second is to explain the argument. First, it is said here: I exist, because there is suffering that relies on it. The five aggregates of grasping must rely on something, and its basis is the self. If it is said that if suffering exists, then its basis, the self, also exists, but suffering does not exist. For example: Some believe that suffering is made by the self, some believe it is made by others, some believe it is made by both, and some believe it arises without a cause. It is not feasible to think so. Some, such as the Samkhyas, believe that the five aggregates of grasping are made by the self. The Vaisheshikas and their own schools say that it is made by others. The Jainas believe that it is made by both. The Carvakas believe that it arises without a cause.
English
If the suffering of the time of death is caused by other sufferings, and those other sufferings of the time of death cause the suffering of birth, then for those sufferings, other self is not seen. Like light and darkness, the relationship of cause and effect does not exist. Therefore, it is not caused by others. Secondly, there are two incidental points. First, refuting that it is made by the person-self: If suffering is caused by suffering, therefore it cannot be said to be made by the self. However, if the person-self personally creates his own suffering, and it is not made and given by others, therefore it is said to be made by the self. If the person-self creates suffering: then, which self creates suffering? The person who creates suffering, what is it other than suffering? If it is thought that the person-self creates the aggregates of suffering in his own continuum, then, which self creates suffering is something to be considered. If it must be clearly said that this is suffering and this is the creator of suffering, then it cannot be said either, because there is no other person-self other than the aggregates of suffering. If it cannot be said that the person-self creates his own suffering, then a person can also create the suffering of the gods and give it to the gods, and the suffering of the gods is also attributed to the gods, therefore, suffering arises from other persons. If suffering arises from other persons: then, another person creates suffering and gives it, how is it possible other than suffering? If the suffering of the gods arises from other persons, and thereby gives it to the gods, then another person creates the suffering of the gods and gives it, how is it possible for the god who receives the suffering to be other than the suffering of the gods? In this way, for the time being, there is no receiver for the suffering that arises from other persons. Now, the giver also does not exist: if suffering arises from other persons, then who created it and the person who gives it to others
