There is. For example, when there is no forest before all the trees, there is also none before each one. If there is no sesame oil in all the sand, there is also none in each one, just like that. If it exists before each one, then it must be admitted that it also exists before all, because everything except each one does not exist. Therefore, it is also unreasonable for it to exist before each one. If the viewer is the same as the listener, if the feeler is also the same, if it exists before each one, then that is unreasonable. If the one who sees forms is the same as the one who hears sounds and the one who feels tastes, then even if seeing and so on exist before each one, it is unreasonable to say that the viewer is also the listener. If that were the case, then the listener who is separate from the act of seeing would also become the viewer, and the viewer who is separate from the act of listening would also become the listener, because such a thing has not been seen. If the viewer is different, and the listener is a different feeling, if the viewer is also different, and the listener is also a different feeler, then if you say that there is no fault as stated above, then when the viewer exists, he will become the listener, and the self will also become many. Just as it is not contradictory for a cow and a horse with different meanings to exist at the same time, if the listener with a different meaning from the viewer becomes the listener even when the viewer exists, then this is not what is desired, because it is not desired that the consciousness of grasping sound and grasping form arise simultaneously. The self will also become many, because it is admitted that the viewer, the listener, and the feeler are established separately. The third case is, if seeing and so on all exist before everything, then on what should it be established? Before seeing and so on, in the state of name and form, from the condition of name and form, the six sense bases are gradually produced, the four great elements from which seeing and hearing and so on will arise exist. Therefore, if you say that before seeing and so on, there exists a self with the four great elements as the proximate cause, then seeing and hearing and so on, and also feeling and so on, from which the four great elements change, on that, it does not exist. Seeing and hearing

as well as smelling and so on, and the grasping of feelings and so on, from which the element arises, there is no self in that element. If the self were established before the grasping of the great elements, it would grasp the great elements, but that is not the case, because there is no cause. How can something that does not exist grasp the great elements? Therefore, there is no self in the elements either. Second, refuting grasping: If the self exists, because there is seeing and so on. Pots and so on are not the nature of the self, and have no connection with seeing and so on. If you say: Seeing and hearing and so on, And feelings and so on as well, If it does not belong to anyone, Those also do not exist. Seeing, hearing, feeling, and so on, if the self to whom the grasping belongs does not exist, then the grasping of seeing and so on also does not exist, is this not clearly shown? Therefore, because there is no seeing and so on, there is no self. Second, the conclusion of the refutation: Thus, if we examine in detail, the self that has not been established should not be examined as to whether it exists or does not exist. Like this: Whatever is of seeing and so on, Before, now, and after, it does not exist, To this, whether it exists or does not exist, Thinking will be reversed. The self does not exist before seeing and so on, because there is no basis for establishment. It does not exist simultaneously now, because for things that have not been established separately, simultaneous existence is not seen. Seeing and so on are also not previously established, because without an agent, the action is not established. Thus, after complete examination, when the self does not exist before seeing and so on, nor does it exist simultaneously now, nor does seeing and so on exist previously and the self exist afterwards, then for the nature that has no object, saying that it exists or does not exist, such extreme thinking will be reversed. Therefore, the grasping and the grasper, like the agent and the action, are established by mutual dependence, and not by their own nature. Therefore, in the Samadhiraja Sutra it says: At that time, the Victorious One, free from sin and possessing the ten powers, is

When this supreme Victor is proclaimed, the existence of sentient beings is like a dream. In this, no one dies, nor is there any birth. The name and life of sentient beings are also unattainable. These phenomena are like bubbles and wood on water. Like illusion, like lightning in the sky. Like the moon in water, and like a mirage. Although some people die in this world and do not transfer or go to other worlds, the deeds done will not be in vain. In samsara, the fruits of white and black deeds will ripen. Thus and so forth it is said. This concludes the commentary on the ninth chapter of the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way, entitled "Examination of What Existed Before." Explanation of the Ninth Chapter.
