Explanation of Chapter Nine Explanation of Chapter Nine Ninth, refuting the existence of prior existence. It is divided into two parts: a detailed refutation and a conclusion to the refutation. The first part is further divided into two parts: refuting the taker and refuting the taking. In the first part, the former's view is stated: Here, "Thus, the near-taker should be known, to eliminate the action and the agent." What is said is unreasonable, because "Seeing and hearing, etc., and feeling, etc., are also dominated, those of whom, those exist before." Just as Lhas byin (ལྷས་བྱིན་, Devadatta) exists before wealth and thus accumulates wealth. The taker of seeing form, hearing sound, smelling fragrance, etc., and tasting flavor, etc., that person to whom it belongs exists before those takers. Many people, including some of their own sects, say this. Why? "If there is no real thing, how can seeing, etc., arise? Therefore, before those, the real thing exists." Just as a widow cannot accumulate wealth without a son, if there is no person existing before seeing, etc., how can he take seeing, etc.? Therefore, just as Lhas byin exists before wealth and thus accumulates wealth, before seeing, etc., the real thing of a person exists. Second, refute it. It is divided into three parts: refuting existence before all, refuting existence before those, and refuting other arguments for prior existence. The first part is: "Seeing and hearing, etc., and the nature of feeling, etc., what thing dwells before, by what is it established?" If the so-called "person" is established based on seeing, etc., then the person who dwells as the real thing of the taker before the taker of seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling, etc., if he does not rely on seeing, etc., then by what does he establish himself as a person? If someone does not rely on his own cause, then like a rich man who does not rely on wealth, he does not exist, that's what he thinks. Also, "Without seeing, etc., also, if that dweller, without those also, there is no doubt those exist." If before seeing, etc., even without seeing, etc., that person

If one thinks that it exists, therefore it takes up views, etc. Even without that person, those views, etc., would exist, there is no doubt, just like a pot and cloth, because they are two different things. There is no taker without taking, and no taking without a taker, because: What illuminates what? What is illuminated by what? Without what, where is what? Without what, where is what? This is the taking of this. If it is said that what taking of views, etc., clearly illuminates which person of the taker? This is the taking of this, if it is said that which person of the taker clearly illuminates what taking of views, etc.? Then, mutually dependent, taking and taker are established, therefore, if what taking of views, etc., does not exist, where is which person of the taker? If there is no person of the taker, where is what taking of views, etc.? Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that taking exists separately from views, etc. Second: Before all views, etc., Nothing exists. Other views, etc., Manifest at other times. If it is admitted that it exists before all views, etc., this fault will also occur, that before all taking of views, etc., no self exists. Then what is it? It exists before each one. Therefore, from seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching, etc., other seeing, hearing, etc., at other times manifest as seer or hearer. When seeing manifests as seer through seeing, hearing, etc., must rely on others to be established. Therefore, if it is said that there is no fault of "by what is it to be established," then: Before all views, etc., If nothing exists, Before each view, etc., How does that exist? If it is said that it does not exist before all taking of views, etc., then how can that person be before each view, etc.?
