Explanation of Chapter Six. Explanation of Chapter Six. Sixth, the examination of attachment and clinging has two parts: stating the former position and refuting it. The first point is: the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas exist, because the afflictions such as attachment, which have them as a basis, are objects of focus. If this is said, to refute it, there are two ways to refute attachment and clinging, and to compare it with others. In the first, there are three parts: direct refutation, revealing other ways of refutation, and concluding the refutation. The first part is: if one thinks that attachment exists by its own nature, then should one think of the basis of clinging as existing or not existing? Either way is unreasonable. If attachment precedes clinging, then, if there is clinging without attachment, attachment exists relying on it, and clinging exists, attachment exists. Attachment is a mental affliction that is manifestly attached to an object, and clinging is its basis, i.e., the mind. If there is no attachment before attachment, and there is a basis of clinging that is free from attachment, then attachment will arise relying on it. When the first moment of the mind meets the aspect of the object and clinging, it is merely designated as clinging when it is completely transformed into the aspect of clinging. But it is not clinging itself, because it is free from the aspect of conceptualization and recollection. Therefore, when the wisdom of the second moment, which manifestly proves it, arises, there is temporarily no object abiding nearby. Because the enjoyer after the first moment of the mind is also not permissible to be labeled. Therefore, the object also does not exist. Therefore, since there is no clinging, attachment is a conceptual fabrication. Because there is no attachment that does not rely on clinging. Therefore, if the clinging of the basis exists, it is reasonable for attachment to exist, then it is also unreasonable for clinging without attachment to exist, because this would lead to the fault that Arhats also have attachment. Or, if there is no clinging, will attachment also exist? Even if clinging does not exist, how can attachment exist? Even if the clinging of the basis does not exist, how can attachment that relies on it exist? Just as without a fruit, there will be no ripening that depends on it. If attachment exists, then, with clinging

If you ask why, if you contemplate whether there is desire when attachment exists, for attachment, desire is also, whether it exists or not, the order is the same. For attachment, even if you think that desire without attachment exists or not before it is okay. If before attachment, if there is desire without attachment, then attachment exists depending on it, if there is desire, there will be attachment. And, even if it does not become desire, how can there be attachment? Apply these negative sequences in the same way. The second case is, where does this fault arise from? Desire and attachment do not arise one after the other, but the two arise simultaneously, because the desire that arises simultaneously with the mind causes the mind to be attached. If you ask this, desire and attachment cannot arise simultaneously. Why? Like this, desire and attachment will become mutually independent. If they arise at the same time, like the left and right horns, desire and attachment will become mutually independent. Also, if desire and attachment exist simultaneously, then should we think of them as one or many? One itself cannot exist simultaneously, because that itself cannot exist simultaneously with itself. If desire and attachment are one, then it is impossible to exist simultaneously, because here, attachment itself cannot exist simultaneously with itself. If they are different, how can they exist simultaneously? If they are different, like light and darkness, because different things are not seen to exist simultaneously, how can they exist simultaneously? Also, if only one exists simultaneously, then it will also become without a companion. If different things exist simultaneously, then it will also become without a companion. If you think that only one thing exists simultaneously, then something that exists alone without a companion will also become existing simultaneously. If you think that different things exist simultaneously, then a horse without a companion and a cow that exists alone in a different place will also become existing simultaneously with the horse, because they are different. Also, if different things exist simultaneously, then, will desire and attachment be established as different? Therefore, the two will exist simultaneously. If you think that desire and attachment are different, but they exist simultaneously, then, will
